I've always jokingly said why is it that all the shop owners on the High St are usually the ones involved in county council or local council politics ? Some are some aren't but you can bet your bottom dollar there are some good advantages to being in the same room as other connected businessmen/women. It's why the big players on the world stage meet regularly to discuss how they can make an extra buck from what they sell, they would start the same biased campaign the last Labour leader had to endure , Martin would be discredited every time he popped his head above the parapet. There are so few good people in politics any more !

This the hero who sent every out to the cheapest energy supplier, nearly all of them had no experience in energy supply, many have now been shown to have made dubious payments and enriched their selves, he has made no criticism of the energy regulator who allowed any and everyone to become an energy supplier, clubs even councils tried their luck hoping to get rich, and lewis told everyone to jump on the cheapest offer, never questioning if the offer looked too good to true, the result we all pay more for energy for all these failed companies.

In the same year, 2020/21 £120.1 billion was given to corporations in subsidies alone, that's without bailouts, tax relief, tax loopholes etc. We aren't poor there is plenty of money in the pot, it's being given to the wealthy at the expense of our life expectancy!

@@TheManwithaview This is pretty much it yeah.
You can go in with the most honest intentions, but you WILL hit a point where you either sacrifice your integrity or you fail.
Your opponents will happily play dirty to get the edge on you, so you will need to do the same to keep up. The people who benefit from corruption are going to see you as a threat and sabotage you, so you must find a way to keep them happy (which basically means continuing that corruption). Your own allies will betray you if they see your honesty as a weakness/liability, voting you out.
The best example I can think of is taxation. It's easy to say "just tax the omega rich more", but when you do that you just make it more appealing for those corporations to take their business (and their tax money) to whatever country is willing to slide them a better deal. Just like that you'll find that you must give in to _some_ corruption to keep those people happy and willing to keep their businesses, jobs, and taxes within the country.
I think the idea that everyone who aspires to become an MP is going in with the intention to make things worse for everyone is naive. I'm willing to bet the overwhelming majority of them went into it with genuine intentions to improve the country, but ended up being corrupted (it's called 'corruption' for a reason, because it spreads like that).
This is why I try not to fall into the mindset of "politician bad" like most people seem to, because I know that realistically I'd probably be no different if I were in their seats.

Not just there. You have the phone companies. Simply put they allow the spoofing of numbers. That to me means they are participating in the frauds for financial gain.
What is needed is a number you dial like 1471 after a fraud call. After a certain number of reports, the number is cut off. You then can appeal if you think that's wrong.
Second they need to move on the fraudsters. If people hack the fraudsters act on it.

These companies don't care where their money comes from so long as no angry nut job with an army of bots and friends in the media threatens to write an article about them on vox or some bs. A hand full of people report a scam, so long as the majority of the internet doesn't hear about it they won't do anything.

They should be experts in their field, non political, and appointed by a Proportional Representative (of the electorate) committee from the Commons. They serve a maximum of 10 years.
Let’s say the commons is sending through a bill on Child Welfare. The Lords who have expertise in the area will be able to review and amend the bill.
They send it back to the commons and it bounces back and forth until it is acceptable to both.
The Commons would only have supremacy in the Finance Act and National Security. Everything else would have to go for review with the Subject Matter Experts.
If a bill is processing where there are no experts in the Lords it is paused until a minimum number of Lords are present to scrutinise.

I’m so glad my MP (Rupa Huq) was on this committee - she asked an excellent question that is absolutely crucial and a serious issue we need to address urgently. Thank you Dr Rupa Huq!

We need more like this man. Brave committed and vocal when he needs to be.

This fellow rarely fails to impress. Such a shame he's smart enough not to enter politics directly.

Martin is a consumer champion and fulfils that role very well. As he indicated if he was ever to step into politics his credibility would instantly we shot.

What I have always respected about Martin Lewis and his advice is that he never encourages people to gamble their hard earned money into a get rich quick scheme. He has always given sound advice on how to make your hard earned money work better. More value for money, more out of your money. Never more money.
It is not an unfair accusation that quite a few people in public office are lining their pockets along the way at the cost of their own integrity and trustworthiness. If our public office figures stopped taking the calls from big companies and acted in the interest of their constituents I believe we would not have record levels of poverty. Would not have record level energy bills. Would not have eye watering bonuses for public office figures.
