Hey! I was having shifting issues with my first gen Xterra and changed out the fluid with Redline MTL. Shifts like dream now! Like a completely new/different trans. I have a bugeye wagon (fishbowl!!!) that is hard shifting in first that I am going to try it on next!
Did mine a week ago with the COBB (IAG clone) combined with the RHD bracket. Its definitely intimidating at first because of all the lines, but combining youtube, cobb, iag manuals and the manual that came with the RHD bracket helped alot
If you look up the PSR RHD bracket, it has flow diagrams of what line goes where and it actually has the iag/cobb, perrin and radium plumbing that should suit any ej
You should throw blast plates on the 5 speed and clear some of the air around it. A much more affordable option for those of us that aren’t ready or able to afford a 6 speed swap but still want to make the stock 5 speed last!
Tanner it can be ur ingagement point, the clutch is dragging or just a hair too close to shift over not allowing smooth transition. You can adjust the fork on master clutch cylinder out a bit. While in there also look to see if the pedal tube is cracking or not cuase this will also cuase the problem.
Plasma Blue Pearl doesn't look horrible with stock tails, the 5 speed doesn't have any real shifting issues consistently for mine which means like once a month I try to back up and need to resync the gears by putting it in 1st then back into reverse. Tint isn't easy and was almost looking forward to your struggle with that back window, I know I struggled with it and almost tore it off the next day, I added a little too much heat when putting it on and had small fingers near the edge, they settled now in Texas heat.
I've tried a good amount of those 5 speeds in those years. I'd say that it depends on what you mean. Reverse is always a problem, 3 to 4th no problem, 5 to 4th can be a problem. But not enough to do anything about it so I'd say you have something going on. Fluid would be a good point to start, but what do I know? You are the Subie God Smeedia.
Fluid defiantly is a must...changed mine and looked so bad....I also have shifter poly bushings, whiteline positive shift kit, and kartboy short throw, blast plates are a must and tranny mount from kein.....shifted much better, but 1st is always hard when coming to a stop, typical 5 speed thing
I’m sure you know about the bad fire wall welds but once I put the humble rumble clutch kit on it actually helped a lot fully engaging the clutch. But it could just be because mine was really cracked when I bought it
Swap the trans fluid out with Subaru Extra S. It’ll make the shifts a lot smoother and take some of the notchy feeling out. Reverse is a pain, gotta go into 1, roll forward to line up the gears since it’s straight cut and then it’ll drop into R pretty easy.
I love my fishbowl. Also love not getting pulled over for tint. I waited 2.5yrs for my car to get finished, I want everyone to see my smile when I'm in it...lol
Recently picked up the same hatch as yours, same color as well. Really excited to mod it. I thought it was only mine that was hard to shift at times. I will do a transmission flush and hopefully that helps with the shifting. Would a Kartboy short shifter help out with the play in the shifter? As I read this is common on the WRX’s. Keep up the great content!
Reverse and 1st are both finicky. If your reverse is being weird go into 4th, and then back into reverse. For 1st gear I noticed that the rubber boot rubs against the shifter so I put grease in that spot.
I low key think you would enjoy wrenching on a bmw more than you think. Not so much the newer ones but since they use straight 6 engines there’s usually plenty of room to work on them
I noticed the Chevron station which is literally one of only three E85 stations in the entire state of Washington.. I was not impressed with the E85 there and I was only getting about 76% final ethanol readings off my motec sensor. I know it's a lot farther from you but the 76 station in Marysville has much better E85. The one good thing about California is that the E85 is the highest quality in the US (usually 83% - 84% final) and it's only $3.89 a gallon as well.. plus we have a lot more stations than Washington does.
That is nice to get 80% I only need to get 70% out of the car for the tune but I think ima swap over to forged fuels here soon. Like $4a gallon and I can get barrells
Every once in awhile I have trouble getting it to go into 4th gear, but only when going full chooch! Swap the fluid and of course run the Motul Gear 300 75w90
5 speed can be annoying to find reverse, and my previous ones HATED the winter… and 2-1 usually is annoying year round… yeah, fun times. Motul GEAR300 75w90 is one of the favs fluid in the community fyi👌 … trying not to be jealous of the tint, want to do mine so bad still! 😂✌️
2011 WRX here and first manual car. I think you are used to the 6 speed, to have nice shifts need to get used to the syncros, that my though. Overall I like the 5-speed for the daily. I also got plans to STI swap my car if I can afford it and do it myself at least the drive train.
I have found that the WRX 5-spd synchros are stupid sensitive to fluid failure and improper fluids. Every time I run into one with a gear-grind issues I swap the fluid and 90% of the issue is resolved.
I just did the AOS in my 2016 WRX, swear I did something wrong and checked everything daily. Just had one of the charge pipes a little loose. Managed to get through it in 5 hours without too many issues…. Or half my coolant spewing out lol

Usually it is the shift u joint on the trans that is getting play in it causing the shift selector fork to not be 100% where it should be compared to the position of the shifter.
@@Smeedia check that u joint too though. The bushings will help but I had my shifter u joint bushing completely mashed out inside and the return spring was gone as well. New oem subaru shifter u joint and return spring made a huge difference.

My '21 STI, going from 5 to 4 is annoying half the time and doesn't feel natural.
Hey! I was having shifting issues with my first gen Xterra and changed out the fluid with Redline MTL. Shifts like dream now! Like a completely new/different trans. I have a bugeye wagon (fishbowl!!!) that is hard shifting in first that I am going to try it on next!
Lemme know how it works on the bug!
Cant wait for the aos install. 👌 Been putting that one off because I couldnt find a video that was in depth enough for my specific car.
Should be out soon 🥳
Should have added that I'm intimidated af by it lmfao thanks for all the info guys!
You should throw blast plates on the 5 speed and clear some of the air around it. A much more affordable option for those of us that aren’t ready or able to afford a 6 speed swap but still want to make the stock 5 speed last!
May have some on the way 🥰
I'm definitely curious to see if it will last with the plates. I never saw someone running those.
Tanner it can be ur ingagement point, the clutch is dragging or just a hair too close to shift over not allowing smooth transition. You can adjust the fork on master clutch cylinder out a bit. While in there also look to see if the pedal tube is cracking or not cuase this will also cuase the problem.
Pulling the motor Herr soon so going to inspect and resend if need be 💪
Plasma Blue Pearl doesn't look horrible with stock tails, the 5 speed doesn't have any real shifting issues consistently for mine which means like once a month I try to back up and need to resync the gears by putting it in 1st then back into reverse.
Tint isn't easy and was almost looking forward to your struggle with that back window, I know I struggled with it and almost tore it off the next day, I added a little too much heat when putting it on and had small fingers near the edge, they settled now in Texas heat.
I've tried tint before and it's just not for me, I have no clue how the wizardry works for that stiff 🤣🤣
My 5 speed was much easier to go into gear after replacing the fluid. Reverse still kinda fights pretty often still though
Reverse absolutely sucks sometimes
Reverse and 5th constantly fight me 💀
Reverse on my 06 b 5spd constantly makes me look like an idiot, just wont go in, have to 1-2-1-2-1-2-r just to make it happen
@@wimmj6952 same
@@wimmj6952 try being really gentle. it works for mine. The harder you force it the less likely it is to go in
01 bugeye wagon 5spd, downshift block from 5 - 4, only on quickshifting tho.. Otherwise smooth strong box
💪💪💪
Yes 5 speeds are slightly clunky. Mainly reverse and sometimes 5th is wonky for me
Same!!!!! REVERSE AND 5TH!
AOS install video next YESS!!! That's perfect timing!! Btw thanks for the last piece of advice. I'll definitely get tinted next as well.
You'll appreciate yourself for doing it ❤️
I've found that sometimes I need to slightly engage the clutch in order for 1st or R to synchronize at times ... but not 2-5 or while driving
For me it seems to be 5th and R 😮💨
I've tried a good amount of those 5 speeds in those years. I'd say that it depends on what you mean. Reverse is always a problem, 3 to 4th no problem, 5 to 4th can be a problem. But not enough to do anything about it so I'd say you have something going on. Fluid would be a good point to start, but what do I know? You are the Subie God Smeedia.
4th to 5th is awful and reverse is trash, new mounts and fluid flush should help 🤞
Glad to see my bro Ruben
He's in tomorrow's video too 😅🔥
Yes my 3rd gear is so bad sometimes to get into on my GD
They don't want to cooperate with us 😅
I'm glad you liked my Evo :) Let's link soon, sad I didn't get to see you at the shop... Probably missed you by 15 minutes rip
Love that thing dude! Makes me wanna get mone up and running asap 😅
Hopefully this new fluid will help fix some of these odd shifter issue's 🤞
My 13 5 speed 330whp/350 wtq with Cobb bushings and a fluid change is smooth. Stage 2 competition clutch and light weight flywheel help
Going to get some bushings ordered for this bishhhh
I’m sure you know about the bad fire wall welds but once I put the humble rumble clutch kit on it actually helped a lot fully engaging the clutch. But it could just be because mine was really cracked when I bought it
Good to know 💪 I think ima just resend the wire wall 🤔
Yes it does, especially in California (i-5)
💀💀💀💀
I feel like I'm going to be up there at the perfect time. So many awesome things happening in the next few weeks!
When you get here?!
@@Smeedia Should be there next Friday!
Yesssss 🥳🥳🥳🥳
Swap the trans fluid out with Subaru Extra S. It’ll make the shifts a lot smoother and take some of the notchy feeling out. Reverse is a pain, gotta go into 1, roll forward to line up the gears since it’s straight cut and then it’ll drop into R pretty easy.
Goijg to try this next time 🤣 reverse has been a PIA
I love my fishbowl. Also love not getting pulled over for tint. I waited 2.5yrs for my car to get finished, I want everyone to see my smile when I'm in it...lol
Where you live where they pull you over for tint? 😳
@@Smeedia NY.
Sounds like California up there
Recently picked up the same hatch as yours, same color as well.
Goingnto try the 4th to reverse thing now and see if that works 🔥
I low key think you would enjoy wrenching on a bmw more than you think. Not so much the newer ones but since they use straight 6 engines there’s usually plenty of room to work on them
The older ones don't look top bad, the newer ones look awful to work on 💀
@@Smeedia they absolutely can be haha. I have a 2013 and it’s been pretty easy for myself thus far
Should of tinted the front and back window as well would of been sick
Back window is tined 👀
Yeah my 2004 WRX sometimes had trouble getting in 4th
They don't always like to cooperate 🤣
Every once in awhile I have trouble getting it to go into 4th gear, but only when going full chooch! Swap the fluid and of course run the Motul Gear 300 75w90
So far 4th hadent given me any issues 🤞🤞🤞
@@Smeedia it's only every once in awhile. It's probably just me miss shifting while getting after it.
Why you no do it?!
2011 WRX here and first manual car. I think you are used to the 6 speed, to have nice shifts need to get used to the syncros, that my though. Overall I like the 5-speed for the daily. I also got plans to STI swap my car if I can afford it and do it myself at least the drive train.
Love the out and about vloggy stuff. Variety rocks.Pray to the Subie gods for that 5 speed!
Just want the 5 speed to last a little bit 😅
I have found that the WRX 5-spd synchros are stupid sensitive to fluid failure and improper fluids. Every time I run into one with a gear-grind issues I swap the fluid and 90% of the issue is resolved.
Good to hear hopefully this fluid swap will make things buttery smooth 😅
09 wrx 5 speed here, yes some times it feels strange n clicks before going into gear. Or one time it refused to go into a gear
Can luckily say mine hadent refused, yet 😅
@@Smeedia be sure to post a vid of the smoke tail lights, was thinking how I could get my 09 looking better
I just did the AOS in my 2016 WRX, swear I did something wrong and checked everything daily. Just had one of the charge pipes a little loose. Managed to get through it in 5 hours without too many issues…. Or half my coolant spewing out lol
Eyyyyy that's not bad though!
Appreciate the wrx hatchback on your channel! I recently picked up a 2011 wrx hatch which has been my dream car and I’m stoked to follow your journey with this one.
- Btw I also have those issues with the gearbox not entering each gear sometimes especially in 3rd.
Been wanting to do a hatch for a while so very happy to bring one on 🥳🥳🥳
Every time for reverse, normally no issue going into first or forward gears.
Reverse is the one that gets me everytime 💀
@@Smeedia I feel like a noob every time it happens. lmao
Hey from down under have a 2013 hatch, looking forward to seeing your mods I will be following most of them .. can you please leave your 6 speed instal till last 🤪 so we can see how the five speed runs with all the mods
Once thr 5 speed blows up I'm swapping it 😅🙏
1st and reverse on a cold morning is a struggle for me sometimes
Curious how it'll act in winter 🥲
Its the linkage bushings for the shifter. YW.
About to swap them out 🤣
Usually it is the shift u joint on the trans that is getting play in it causing the shift selector fork to not be 100% where it should be compared to the position of the shifter.
New bushings ordered 💪
@@Smeedia check that u joint too though. The bushings will help but I had my shifter u joint bushing completely mashed out inside and the return spring was gone as well. New oem subaru shifter u joint and return spring made a huge difference.
Usually while driving my 5 speed would go into gear fine but when stopped it would sometimes be hard to put it into 1st or reverse especially
Reverse has been kicking my ass 💀
Yea I noticed that also my 5th seems so long to get into 1 through 4th bam bam then 5th just takes for ever :)
5th and reverse do not like going into gear 😅
Lovin the vibes, and content T. Everythings relatable 😃. Because subie life.
Eyyyy my man 💪🔥
Lower gears can be difficult to shift into.
I've noticed 😮💨
My 02 5mt hates going into 1st. I gotta hit 2nd then 1st every time of I want it smooth. Otherwise it's a forcing thing. No grinds though. Fresh mobile 1 gear oil.
NY gives us a hard time, I miss my tints!! looking good!
Did not know they were that strict 😳
On the 5 speed I find that reverse can sometimes be a bit crunchy. Swap in some motul trans fluid and it’ll be night and day
Giving this a try 🤌
when i had my 04 wrx sometimes getting into first and reverse was a pain. just wouldnt go in but not any problems in my sti hatch.
Reverse kills me everytime 💀
I just bought a 2010 WRX sedan, your videos have been very educational. Are there and major tips people have for someone buying a WRX?!
Ohhhh Congrats! Make sure you check ALL west items, fluids, filters etc
Thank you so much!
First mod I did on my STI. Can't stand fishbowl. Looking forward to the tune. Good luck🤞
Fishbowl gotta go 🙅♂️
This heat in WA is definitely making me regret not tinting mine sooner
That's what made me wanna get mine done ASAP 🤣
