Honestly, there are a lot of fan mangas out there that would've made the show even better. This further solidifies it. A few edits here and there and this could have worked for canon

I know I'm kinda tired of the tragic villain story. He's always been one of my favorite Anime villains cuz he is evil for the sake of being evil. Kinda the same way I find all the documentaries on Theodore Robert Bundy (Ted Bundy) so intriguing.
It’s not so much an excuse, but a REASON for him to be evil... and that, if done right, always makes the best villains.
I'd be sick of Frieza if his character was just a plank of wood that never changed except he's been steadily evolving with each revival. In ROF he decides to train which he's never done before because he was naturally gifted with power. Not much but it's a start. Then the TOP gave him by far the best introduction when he slaughtered the assassins and he became the wildcard of the tournament and by far the most interesting character in it besides Jiren and 17. It would not have been nearly as epic with Fat Buu. If they kill him off unceremoniously now after all that it'll be retarded. No payoff in it whatsoever. He has to keep developing somehow.
I can't help but agree... Once they introduced ROF in 2015 I knew that despite getting killed off again, he would be making a 3rd return to make use for something bigger... Toriyama had this intended since he wrote out ROF then, I'm almost sure of it. Would they just give him a new transformation to gain mileage on the Z fighters as well as an arc for nothing? It would be a waste of time if it had been. I have been predicting a scenario like the TOP for 3 years now.
@@zachparker1468 It also wasn't even a satisfying conclusion because Goku lost the battle and Vegeta only won because of Golden Frieza's stamina drain. The whole reason Goku let Frieza reach 100% on Namek was because he wanted to beat him at his best. Then Whis reversed time and it just wasn't an epic conclusion to perhaps the biggest DB villain ever. And with Frieza able to increase his strength so much in just a few months, he has too much potential to just discard now. He is destined to go the same path to redemption as Piccolo, Vegeta and 17/18.

I dont think frieza needs this kind of backstory his natural evil is what strives him we should not feel sorry for him that would just damage his character. He does not need a reason for his actions that makes a true villian.

I just read all the current chapters. This is my new favorite one. Just a lil correction. That is not Freezas father narrating. It is his mother Nova. She is fact having a dream foreshadowing her son destroying planet Vegeta. Its suddely mentioned. I can see why you missed it.

Honestly i prefer frieza being born already a malicious deadly sociopath asexually reproduced from his father's genes. Something about a character that is born evil has always been scarier to me than something that was transformed evil. It's too common to think that we're all born with some good in us. But what if you had to go up against something that was never good? That was always evil, always sadistic? Something that not only didn't believe in mercy but saw it as an alien concept. That i dig.

No, that's never been definitely proven in any interview.

The 4th footnote at the bottom says the following
"It is unclear whether Toriyama means Freeza was born from only one parent, or emphasizing that only Cold carried these traits."
So Freeza could indeed have a mother, and he merely inherited his mutant traits from his father. The possibility is there.

Actually the official canon for DBZ backs up that he had an abusive childhood because Frieza says to Goku "I haven't felt pain since my father hit me"

Frieza’s past is something I always wondered about.
Well he is a space Empelor who killed people for galactic market and make other to Join him his empire. We know only that freeza was ONCE defeated by beerus and and MUST Destroyed planet vegeta to survive so... I think freeza is Good character EVEN after this and in the story we only seen him on planet Namek and vegeta
This is an interesting take, but from what we get from the actual canon is that Frieza has always been strong from the day his father gave birth to him (Yes Frieza having a mother is odd, and for those that may not know he has no mother) So seeing him in such a weak state also took me by surprise. Interesting that the writer is trying to make him someone that could be related to, but to me, that takes away from the greatness of Frieza, he is evil because he is.
Mmm, I'd be careful relating to him too much. He's not too bad yet but he's kind of on a Walter White path. Daddy has some pull, sure, but Freeza always had a cruel streak of his own.
The asexual thing is a common misconception. In the interview you're referencing, the way Toriyama phrased his syntax is that Freeza's mutant traits were inherited solely from his father. If there was a second partner, they possessed no mutant traits. Whether he has a mother is never actually clarified.
That said, I suspect that if Kuriza were ever brought into the show, for the sake of pacing alone, they would make Freeza asexual. There has been an unfortunate trend of turning female characters into a means to get more saiyan babies. Making Freeza's race asexual would mean they get to skip all that

I wasn't going to assume anything about the possibility of there being a mother because there is usually a lack of any form of reference past King Cold, safest bet for assumptions being the theory of asexually reproduction, and considering that the Namekains already do so means it's not outside the realm of possibility. Thanks for the clarification though, well have to wait if Toriyama doesn't clarify in another interview or if Kuriza is used later down the road like you said.

Female characters seem to get the shaft in Z and S in terms of how they service the plot. I like Vados though. I'd love for Toriyama to clarify but I'm pessimistic he remembers this interview. Launch is still rotting in a bar the last time we saw her. One of the DBS outros got my hopes up including a shot of her. :(

Shrug. I don't know. Personally I think these Freudian excuse-type origins kind of ruin the mystique of villains like Freezia. It would be like saying the Joker's the way he is because his dad beat him. Instead of just being a larger than life force of evil.
If that is your concern, don't worry. I know it seems that way right now but Freeza will absolutely not be permitted to blame his sadistic tendencies on his upbringing alone. He has a cruel streak with a slow maturation. :)
Well it's not an excuse, there are no excuses for all the of the atrocities Freeza committed but it's more or less an explanation to why he's the way he is. Wether you feel bad for him or not, it doesn't change the fact that he's currently a piece of shit, we're only getting the explanation as to why he's a piece of shit. Also it wouldn't really work with Joker, Joker legit went fucking crazy, his past doesn't have all that much yo do with what he does.

Shrug. Your still trying to say Freeza is the way he is not simply because he wants to but because his father was abusive. Just to me it takes away something away from Freeza, some of his agency.
As for the joker, they'd certainly have given him origins and backstories to greater and lesser effect. And some of them do have an effect on the Joker and his character. The one presented in "The Killing Joke" being the most prominent in my mind.

I personally like characters who have reasons to actually, whenever someone's evil to just be evil, I don't get the same feeling as I would seeing a character who has a reason. But I guess we all have our preferences. Regarding Joker, yes he does have a past that influences him a bit but he's mainly the way he is because he fell into that chemical plant.

I think you're over-fixating on the word "excuse". I'm not complaining that Freeza had a bad childhood and now he's justified in blowing up planets or anything. I just don't like the same, cliche he had a bad childhood that villains always seem to get when we explore their origins.
Well that's kind of the thing. I would consider wanting to sell planets for money, or whatever his empire sold the planet's for, a more than valid reason to be evil. Whereas him being evil because his dad smacked around his mom isn't really a "reason". There's no agency in that and instead it just makes him reactive in his own story.
Actually I don't think the Joker in "The Dark Knight" fell into a chemical vat. He's just an agent of chaos. So there are interpretations which remove that part of the Joker's backstory.

Frieza is still the greatest dragon ball villain ever hands down. Period
I prefer the idea he was born an evil bastard. Generic I know, but little more generic than the old dark tragic backstory rout. At least being born an utter shit makes him a true villain. Some like the idea of a good villain being one who wasn't always bad, but personally I don't see those types as being true villains, just horribly misguided people twisted by cruel circumstances. The willingness to do evil without any life changing motive, but rather just because its pleasurable to hurt others and prosper from their suffering, laughing all the while as you spill a planet's worth of blood to kill boredom or reap personal benefits and horde them, and so on, that to me is a real villain, simplistic as it may be, shades of gray and nuance aren't always needed for that.
Don't mind me-- just slowly reaching for the rug under the feet of readers who think Daddy made him mean. :D

Ive never gotten tired of frieza. He would make a great saiyan. But yeah, hes THE beat villain of all. He is THE most evil, maniacle, remorseless, merciless, unforgiving, mean, bad, just every single thing that you could associate with the word 'evil', he is it. Buu was created by pure evil energy and Buu was still niwhere NEAR as evil as Frieza. Frieza literally tastes the blood of his enemies and smiles, you can almost see him shudder in pleasure when he causes someone so much pain that thwy scream in utter agony. Frieza is THE KING of all evil.

I'm no writer and won't pretend to be. Yet here's a simple unimaginative idea that even so alters things. Instead of a typical "Papa made him evil" rout, why not reverse it, have their race be benevolent, well meaning types, Kold is their king, he was born with mutant genes but has a good heart and seeks to spread their race out into the warring, fractured universe and bring peace, but at this time, Kold was much weaker, and needed a strong offspring to be the seldom used strong arm of the effort who'd just be a deterrent to resistance.
Natural offspring birthed between male and female of their kind yield offspring too weak, but with his mutant genes, the forbidden asexual form of birth, which in the past has spawned only hideously evil and powerful entities, born with a fully intact intellect and all the knowledge of their sire, but for whatever reason, the result is always malevolent. Kold however believes he can reason with and if need be trick his future son into serving the greater good, however he is mistaken and it costs him,. his wife, their natural born children and their race everything.
Frieza is born, and with such power, power much greater than he showed on Namek, it took but a month for Frieza to take over, demand the obedience of his, at their core, goodhearted species whom saw him as an abomination of nature and repeatedly tried to kill him or persuade Kold to. They refused to bow and so Frieza, with his then enormous power, killed them all simultaneously, slowly. His half brothers, half sister and their mother all tried to stop him, and he tortured them to death too, making Kold, helpless, watch those he loved more than life itself, get torn apart and mangled over the course of days, letting it sink in just what a horrible mistake he made.
Maybe a small spark of sentimentality led Frieza to spare his father, or perhaps it was mere sadism. Kold swore that someday, he would have his revenge, and it started with a cunning plan to weaken Frieza. Frieza at the point of his birth was a LOT stronger than on Namek, not quite Fat Buu Levels, but not too far off either. Kold was considerably weaker than he was when he went to Earth as well. But seeing Frieza was having trouble controlling his power without anyone to teach him how, which Kold at first refused to do, hoping it would destroy him, Kold later saw it wouldn't happen, and in fact Frieza was bit by bit getting a hold of it, so he ramps up Frieza's paranoia, overstating the risks and persuade him to learn the very same suppression forms Kold himself invented to seal away his own power to keep from accidentally harming others.
Thus the great plan went that, as with what happened to Gohan when he let his power go dormant for a long time. Frieza sealing away his power, while Kold whispered undermining flattery to Frieza, encouraging laziness, convincing him he didn't need to control his power, making him lazy, that no matter what, nobody would ever challenge him, and lying about how suppressing his true power would only freeze it, not degrade it over time, Frieza became complacent, all the while Kold trained and grew stronger in secret.
BUT, as times and Frieza's conquest went on, Kold was defeated, and not in the way he'd thought possible, for his son's lust for power was contagious, and Kold resisted at first, but he slowly became corrupted as he tasted the fruits of the evil his son sowed in the universe as hundred if not thousands of races were exterminated, hundreds more useful, potentially innovative races enslaved and the Frieza force expanded, such that by the time Frieza's power had atrophied so much that Kold, fully transformed, had surpassed him, he no longer cared for his family or their race, now seeing reality from the same perspective his son did, seeing that race, that family, and his pitiful attachment to them, and his desire to avenge them, as pathetic and weak.
So Kold became as bad as the son he once sought to destroy, yet unlike Frieza who cared for nobody, Kold at least still held one twisted, yet redeeming spark in him and that was a sense of warped pride in his offspring, even though when Trunks slew Frieza, Kold didn't care in the least, by then, he was just another Frieza. All along, either of them could have chosen to be different, but Frieza was always true to his nature, rather it was Kold who was the most pathetic of the pair, because at least Frieza never pretended to be anything other than what he is.
Yeah, its an overdone, unimaginative and un-creative idea, just another story about well-meaning people creating a monster that can't be controlled for a noble goal, and overall its a pretty generic concept, but I prefer it to a typical child abuse daddy turned him evil and mommy wanted him to be good, plot.
I would enjoy seeing you move forward with this project. Is it not something that interests you? The only prerequisite for being a writer is to make yourself write.
I know that, right now, Cold might seem like a character who falls firmly on one side of the good vs. evil debate. But no believable character (or person) casts themselves as a villain in their own story n(outside of children's entertainment and the occasional genre deconstruction/satire). If you want to see something that steps away from blaming parents (and I personally hate when characters don't take ownership of their own flaws), you may want to give UG a read. I'm trying to be nuanced in building up Freeza as the sadistic tyrant we know and love. No one "made" him evil. :)

I don't think that Frieza is the type of character that needs a depressing backstory to explain why he is the way he is. I've always looked at him as a psychopath that's always been the way he was. He innately wants power and control and can't care less about others. He's corrupt, sadistic, power hungry, and doesn't have a conscience. He's Frieza. No explanation is required.

And made him on par with super saiyan blue. It took goku how many years to become a super saiyan two and then super saiyan three, and just like that frieza is more powerful than that? They pretty much made it so saiyans are not the ultimate warrior race with that. It would be nice if you could shed some light on this topic black.

Well if that is your criteria, how is that any different than Freezia being stupidly stronger than the Sayian race when he was introduced?
Personally I thought the Sayians were the ultimate warrior race not because they could necessarily compete with the random powerful mutants like Freezia, which barring the introduction of Goku they couldn't, but rather because how every Sayian was "strong" with an unexceptional fighter like Raditz being more than enough to wipe out your typical planet's population. Frieza was born stronger than an average ssj so why would his rate of growth be more than that of other races?

I like his in canon story. Only someone who was naturally evil with no child abuse could destroy planets filled with life. It just makes more sense to me.

@@LadyTygryComics Toriyama and toei have already ruined Frieza enough I don't want this fanfic to be Canon. Less is more revealing too much about this character would ruin him more frieza's one of these characters that should have stayed dead.
I don't want this fic to be canon either. I write differently than Toriyama. If I were to encounter DB for the first time now, I wouldn't like it; I'm not the target audience anymore like I was when I was a teen. But a character who is unironically evil because it's fun to be evil isn't a character I would appreciate now. UG isn't meant to be "better" than DB. It's meant to be different. :)
I also agree about leaving him dead. When I started watching the series (mid-90s), I loved the character. I still do. But I firmly believe that dead characters need to stay dead. It cheapens the loss when they can be wished back to the point characters aren't even affected by loss anymore. There will be no take-backs on death in anything I write.
@@LadyTygryComics I would rather have a new villain have this kind of backstory than Frieza. Considering how creatively bankrupt this franchise has become it has taken most of its ideas from fanfiction I would rather them do something new and original. The 12 Universe concept was interesting yet we barely know anything about those universes I would like to see more Dragon Ball stories revolving around new characters I'm sick of the old characters there isn't anywhere you can take them without taking something away that made those characters special to begin with.
That's fine if you feel that way. I prefer wholly original stories as I don't consume much fanfiction myself these days. This is the first, and almost certainly last, time that I'll be working off of someone else's source material.
I'm totally with you on the Universe exploration. I was really hoping something would have happened with the first DBS tournament. Champa wins and the universes get swapped. Mix it up a little. I'm tired of the dragon making everything all better.
I don't think they have much confidence in the new characters. They seem to do the absolute minimum with most of them. Sadly, the main priority of DBS seems to be selling new toys. :/
More than the fans would want? I'm not sure about that. I wasn't the biggest fan of his original return but his role in super changed how I felt about him. I still think there's a whole story waiting on how he was ordered to destroy Vegeta by Berrus. In other words there's a lot of good things that can be done with him.
Slight problem, Freeza implements both his parents in abuse "You're the first one who's ever hurt me besides my loving parents that is." (from Goku vs Freeza on Namek, English Dub). That statement implies both farther and mother are equally guilty. That said I do believe Freeza and Cooler came from a broken home and were raised by crap-sack parents. Likely mother and father disliked each other and used their children as tools against each other, ending in a fight to the death between the two parents. This would effect the children drastically and would play heavily on their personality, likely making them view life as expendable and emotions like love, caring, kindness, ect as weak and suicidal.
That's a failure on the part of the English dub, I'm afraid.

Only in some English adaptations. Some English translations change it to “father.” There are at least three ways to interpret his use of 親 but I took it to mean that it was his father who damaged his true form. His mother wasn’t involved, regardless of whether she exists in canon. Ignore the folks parroting misinformation that there is no plural form for "parent." He could have said 両親. He didn't. Cold beats his offspring solo.
