  • HOW I PREPARE MY BARN FOR LAMBING.
The countdown is ON! Less than 2 weeks to go until the new wee ones start arriving...
My favourite time, and my most stressful time here in the barn.
But, when I can stay ahead and get the clean up and set up jobs done before the first lamb drops, I feel so much more in control.
This video shows the process of cleaning out the barn, and the steps taken after to prepare and organize for the next lambing group.
    On a side note.
To all my friends in Ontario dealing with this relentless rain, my western friends dealing with drought, and my US friends dealing with flooding...
I wish you nothing but well wishes, and prayers for a way out of this planting season... and a better, sunnier growing season. NOTHING is more important than your health and well being.
Please take care of yourself, and your fellow farmers.
If you know someone who is struggling... reach out.

I have never seen that before. It was totally different to what I am used to here in Australia. Running several thousand sheep in open paddocks is how it is done in Australia. Yours system is much closer and also weather dependant. Heat and drought are our problems where as I think cold must be your issue. Thank you for the insight in how it is done elsewhere.

I live in Australia and am currently on holidays on the Granite Belt, known for its sheep farming. While I understand that high intensity farming draws criticism from Animal activists, I can see nothing but benefits. As we head into our tenth, at least, year of drought and I see the livestock struggling, no fodder in the paddocks, sheep falling victim to wild dogs and foxes, your farming makes sense to me. Someone has to supply the meat trade and this farming ensures the sheep are far better looked after than a paddock mob.
You do amazing things, well done.

I wish I was half as organized as you were! As you mentioned. A lot of flooding down here this year. Can't speak for other states but Idaho is getting flooded one week, and in a drought the next. Can't wait to see the lambs! Couple of those girls can use a "Wide load" sign! I just found your channel again and I am so happy(and hit subscribe so fast as not to lose you!) I found you last year when I was looking for info on CIDRs to see if I wanted to use them in my herd. Actually found you again this week while looking for onfo on out of season CIDR protocol. Putting CIDRs in my does tonight. Thank you for all the info you provide!
Also, on ketosis/PT. In case anyone is looking to add something into their treatment list/book in case it happens, this is what I do/use.
    Vitamine-B complex. Stimulates appetite.
Propylene glycol given via tube directly into the stomach so as not to burn the throat and make does/ewes not want to eat even more than they don't already(Pg BURNS i accidentally got it on my tongue and was in serious pain for quite a while)
Calcium gluconate. Orally or SQ. About 8oz orally or 40ml SQ over the ribs. 2-4 times a day. Calcium isn't required but seems to really help and also helps prevent Milk fever.
    Molasses for some energy
Alfalfa/water mash given with the PG via tube for more calcium/energy.
"Magic" can also be used by isn't required. It is a mixture of Corn oil, Karo syrup, and Molasses. It is quick and lasting energy.
PT/ketosis is most likely to occur in overweight does/ewes, underweight does/ewes, or does/ewes carrying multiples. That's what I use on my does.

I can't imagine going to that level of exhaustion every few months. That takes some hardcore dedication going into that, knowing how tough it's going to be. But when you love what you do (clearly she does love this work deeply) it doesn't feel like drudgery. Farming isn't easy (no matter what you raise), it is why not everyone does it.

You was talking about your rations for the heavily pregnant ewes, have you ever considered using molasses in ball feeders it's great for energy and rumination
In the UK you can get it with added minerals if required. Don't know if you have considered limeing your pens after cleaning and before strawing.
Good luck with you upcoming lambing and hope you get those crops sorted
