As a Twenty One Pilots fan (don't bully me) I really hope the album impresses me like Trench or like Vessel even. Probably leaning to the Vessel side after hearing Shy Away
Holy cow this the first time I’ve agreed 100% with everything he’s saying. And I’m a big TØP fan. As always though, I’m looking forward to the new record and will most likely end up loving it after a while.
Well, self titled was mostly piano, rab and vessel's main instrument were synths, in blurryface it was more of a mixed bag, while trench's main focus was on bass and drums. Tyler said he's been playing a lot of guitat, but even tho this song's main focus are the various guitar lines, there is a lot of focus on synths, jusg like in vessel and rab. So yeah in terms of instrumentals its very rab like, just with much better production.
Right, or like “Good Morning” in Graduation. I get why it’s done but it’s a bit old by now. Same with the endings of albums titled something related to the word “end”, ya know
I appreciate because they're taking it in a different direction while still feeling like twenty one pilots. Like it's way more indie synth pop than they've ever gone, but the writing and vocals still have the same personality (whether you consider that a good thing or not). I'm kinda excited to see how the rest of the album pans out.
tyler getting into playing guitar is so cool to me as a fan for awhile: he always just stuck to bass or ukulele or piano, specifically saying once his "hands are too small" to play guitar, and i think it's a much needed and very interesting addition to their sound.
You're in a desert, walking along in the sand when all of a sudden you look down. You see a tortoise and you flip it over on it’s back, Anthony. The tortoise lays on it’s back, it’s belly baking in the hot sun, beating it’s legs trying to turn itself over but it can't. Not without your help. But you're not helping. Why are you not helping, Anthony?
Tyler said that this song is encouraging his brother to find his deeper meaning in his new found passion of starting to write songs or something similar
Tyler said that he would release two albums. The album "SCALED AND ICY" can be concluded that the songs of the album will be more light and they can be classified in the genre of pop. And the other album should reflect the fight against propaganda and have a heavier message. According to fans, the new album will carry a certain propaganda of the well-being of the DEMA world, and the next album should destroy this illusion. this helps to diversify the sound
It's a fun song. And so weirdly nostalgic to 2000's days. So it's pretty good. The WEIRD thing though is that I keep playing it over and over! So what you will, Tyler knows how to write a hook.
There are a number of theories that this will be the theme of the album, with the story being a continuation of the universe from Trench in which they're being forced by the Bishops who run the city to make more commercial-friendly music than they otherwise would.
I think you put it very well; it's not as "exciting" as a lot of the songs on Trench. I like it, and I like it better on the second listen too, but I don't like it as much as I did most of the Trench songs. Personally I vibe more with the rock-sound on Trench, than the synth-pop sound (on Choker now aswell), so I don't think I will enjoy this new album as much as the last. That being said; I love how this universe that they're creating, is just becoming denser and deeper, and expanding with every song, and the teasers on the dema website. I think TØP is one of the most innovative, creative bands out there right now...not necessarily with the music, but TØP is like a whole fucking package.
It’s okay I feel like it’s kinda too safe. It’s missing what separates them from other alternative rock artists. Too bland for a stand alone single. I LOVED Trench
It's definitely catchy. I've always admired the thematic commitment in their records, whilst still having a diverse soundscape. While I still like self titled the most, I can respect a more pop oriented approach
Twenty One Pilots is fun to listen to for me because they were clearly influenced by the music I grew up with, the early 2000s stuff. This gives me a Killers and Strokes kind of vibe. I appreciate their dedication to changing styles, and their music comes off as really genuine to me. Feels like they write music they want to write. This track was okay for me? I think it will grow on me later but it's fun. Also Melon, Level of Concern is super good. You're wild.
its very interesting to see non-fans' perspectives on this track and the rest of their music-as a diehard fan for a few years i definitely thought trench was a weaker album than, say, regional at best or vessel. i think the change in tone from these past few songs (level of concern, christmas saves the year, etc.) are indicative of how the singer's mental health is improving, and he no longer needs to have "edgy" lyrics and very emotional parts. the screaming in the songs is also just his raw feelings as he's very passionate about the music he's making-unlike a lot of popular artists these days, he and the drummer completely produce the songs from the lyrics to the finished product, so it makes sense that he has a strong emotional connection to the music he makes.
recently started playing bass and loved that this came out right on time to learn!! loved them since 2016 and think it’s super good n i’m excited for the full album.
Since I’ve kept up with the storyline they are building, even though the track isn’t amazing, it builds the story really well and makes me realllly excited for the lo, we’ll see what happens!
how do you think the track is related to the universe? i am so into the story and the Dema album and everything but I didn't get the connections in this song :(
@@janine2957 personally, I think it being so sonically different than their other music is, itself, how it fits into the lore here. He’s allegedly working under the supervision of the Bishops & Dema on Scaled and Icy, creating their propaganda for them, so there’s lots of pop elements they wouldn’t usually have (guitars, upbeat melody). All while he yells the lyrics in the background vocals as a kind of cry for help.
@@GuentherHaxn It started with Blurryface, which was a character representing Tyler's insecurites. On the album Trench, Blurryface was personified with nine bishops who are called Nicolas Bourbaki, or simply Nico. Those nine bishops rule the confined city Dema. Dema is a metaphor for mental illness. In Dema, the bishops worship the religion Vialism, which is a metaphor for glorification of suicide. They try to push their religion onto the inhabitants, trying to make them commit suicide. When they do commit suicide, the bishops put up neon gravestones for them that light up the outer parts of the city, trying to entice more people to committing suicide. There is a group in the world of Dema that is called Banditos. They have their camps in Trench, which is in between Dema and freedom. They have found a secret tunnel that leads to Trench. They are trying to bring Tyler out of Dema, but everytime they do, the bishops bring him back into Dema. There is also a character called Clancy, but he has not been talked about at all, neither in interviews or on the albums. He wrote a couple letters about his fight against Dema, and they were posted on a site called dmaorg. He posted a new letter at that site a week ago. The Council of Dema has now removed all letters. We have also gotten clues in a video that Clancy is dead. However, that showed up on a TV, so we shouldn't believe it (We Don't Believe What's On TV is a song on Blurryface). In a music video for a christmas song they made, we can see the text "SAI is propaganda". Sai is both a weapon (the new logo) and an abbrevation for Scaled And Icy (their new album). Scaled And Icy is an anagram for Clancy is dead. The album is sponsored and presented by Dema, as we have seen on promotion posters. That is basically everything you need to know.
It def a grower. As you said the lyrics are introspective without being cringe. The production is clean. The roaring bass and fuzzy warm sound compliment the catchy hook. I have a feeling some may find this “safe” or vanilla due to its almost subdued sound. But i def think it will win people over as time goes on with how all the pieces fit together nicely. Even if you don’t love it, i think we can all agree that the band has really stepped up in a big way from their first handful of records. Like Trench, and this track are legitimately well crafted, and Tyler Josef has drastically improved his writing (we can all ignore the pandemic causing him to write will you be my little quarantine - we were all feeling a little stir crazy by that point of lockdown). If they put out a Killers/ Strokes style record that captures the early 00s that wouldn’t be so bad.
That must be what drew me to them. I was a big Killers fan back before I discovered Twenty One Pilots in 2013. I never put the two together but now that you say that it explains why I grew to like TOP so much. I tend to like most of what they put out because it's not always the same sound. I like the jumping around, mixing different genres and styles. I find it refreshing. I like not knowing what to expect with every new song. I've never been disappointed with what they put out. Everything from their self titled album up to now has been exciting to me. Cool sounds, great vocals, catchy/thoughtful lyrics, it's a great mix.
Anthony, in order to understand the song you need to be up to date with the story of dema and the bishops you see clancy is supposed to be tyler joseph trying to escape his insecurities and you can read his diary by analyzing the website's html5 coding and organizing it in alphabetical order and deciphering it and then putting it into a daw and then running it to a spectogram where you can see a map where the band's cousin's sister buried a hand-written diary in morse code with half of the lore you need to understand this deep masterpiece
Considering him and Josh are being "held captive" by DEMA (a cult he created which represents depression) and this is supposed to be propaganda created by that cult, it's hard to believe that. I wish it were true though
I felt like Shy Away sounded kinda boring but I liked the lyrical themes. Not exactly expecting Scaled and Icy to outdo Trench, but I can hope it'll be a decent project
Quick fact: Tyler said that the color blue means defeat or surrender so the later tracks might have that trench heaviness in the later leg of the album or a last hoorah or im just fucking stupid
well im not surprise if SAI theme is like shy away or level of concern type song but im not surprise either if it mix up like trench. TOP is really broad when it comes to their type of music genre lol
I loved their old sound so much and this seems like a step towards that direction again. It’s clearly different, but it’s a little bit closer than what Trench was.
I was kinda expecting them to go to a different direction on this latest album and I was right. I like that the new album will probably be way lighter than Trench, something cheerful during the current global situation. I was a bit anxious if I will be keen on the new single or not and I was surprised very pleasantly. It's such a nice song.
This feels kinda like a departure from their older sound while being kinda loyal to their past at the same time. Tbh my favorite song from them in a while.
Rearrange the album title “Scaled and Icy” and it spells: “Clancy Is Dead” ☠️ Clancy is the main character within the concept narrative of their last album “Trench” introduced in the music videos that immerse the listener into the world of the DEMA Universe. If you search “DEMA Explained” on RUclips, it’s fascinating to see how they’ve built an entire storyline through their last two albums, continuing with this next one.
Not my absolute favorite by any means, but that chorus is an instant hit for me, makes me feel everything I want to feel from a TØP song, whatever that means
Shy Away to me sounds like Fitz and The Tantrums meet Panic and dabble in The Strokes. Seems like they're moving away from doom and gloom and more towards a hopeful, motivational sound.
Yeah, I hope he stops those clickbait titles. The title of the track review for Olivia Rodrigo, for example, didn't really make sense with the video (though I agree with the title).
I think it's cool and all that the 80s styled music is coming back... but the real question is when does the 60s beatles-esque sound make a comeback in pop music?
This sort of reminded me upon the style change Paramore went through with the release of After Laughter - which really turned out for the better. If this is twenty one pilot's After Laughter, I'm looking forward to it.
I agree with the thoughts you have on this one, I love the song being how different it is from trench and as much as I wanted them to continue down that path but I will say that this was a light fun song. Perfect for spring/ summer album
Most people in the fanbase are expecting this album to sound very radio friendly, and then the next album will be like "Trench: part 2" or something, so I'd say we're getting that same sound in the fall/next year (hopefully)
I completely agree with this, as a massive tøp fan. I loved everything about Trench, so I really hope they don't fully abandon that style; but if this is what they evolve into I won't be particularly sad.
This track is perfect for their storyline, in trench the theme was that Tyler escaped dema, he was scared and calling for help, thats way the sound of trench was dark just like in jumpsuit, nico and the niners or leave the city, but in this album Tyler and Josh are captured by dema, and it’s using them as a propaganda to make the people outside of dema think its a happy place while in reality its a dark place. You can see what is written in the new album cover, it explains a lot.

as a fan of twenty one pilots, trench took me a minute to get into honestly. but this song only took me about two listens before i became obsessed with it. i listened to it like once an hour for the last week or so. it just has an undercurrent of raw emotion and hope and sincerity that really makes me happy
Strokes angles vibes
Yes
Also similar ish color palette
La mejor combinación
No, it's more like The Killers but with less passionate vocals than Brandon Flowers, still not bad though
They wish. This has Phoenix vibes but with less energy... in other words: bland
love the 80's renaissance when it comes from actually creative artists and not over produced platsic shit, top definitely will be one of the good ones, i'm excited
21 pilots dropping 2021, better be a banger
In the year 2021, 21 pilots are releasing an album the 21st of may, its gotta be a bop
I hope Trench wasn’t their peak
So far even I don't think trench was their peak
No way dude. Just listen to how much Tyler can do in a DAY now with location sessions.
It wasn’t lol, don’t let Fantano give you your opinion, think for yourself
@@samboger25 Nah bro I'm an Ohio boy I love almost everything they do. I love Blurryface, vessel and self-titled (self titled arguably my favorite for nostalgic reasons). Didn't like trench at first but once it grew on me I was in love. All their albums are great and have a special emotional edge and release to them. I have hopes they can outdo trench, but this song and the mulburry street leak just don't sound too good, I mean they're catchy but it doesn't have a long lasting effect on me like their past records
vessel was their peak and it keeps getting worse
These comments make me happy to see how much love Trench has gotten over time.
I'm a hip-hop head, but I loved TRENCH. Looking forward for this new album regardless
Your favorites might be Levitate and Morph, maybe?
@@carlosandrescastromedina3100 oddly enough, Levitate is one of my least favorites on this album. I enjoy Morph, but if I had to pick just one song as my favorite that would be Neon Gravestones (it's sonically good, lyrics are deep and meaningful)

As a Twenty One Pilots fan (don't bully me) I really hope the album impresses me like Trench or like Vessel even. Probably leaning to the Vessel side after hearing Shy Away
Also I liked blurryface but it isn't on the same level as their other albums even the self titled
This is their After Laughter basically, in which you snubbed with a 7 and not an 8.
Exactly what I thought!
7 is a good score baby
@Banriya 7? yeah right, he may as well slap a 0 on it as well
@FactoryOfSuffering1977 he didn't like paramore's earlier stuff sadly so he wouldn't do a classic review of that :/
@FactoryOfSuffering1977 I think there’s too much teen angst in that album for him. He’d honestly probably give it a 5/10 at best.
Holy cow this the first time I’ve agreed 100% with everything he’s saying. And I’m a big TØP fan. As always though, I’m looking forward to the new record and will most likely end up loving it after a while.
It reads to me, and to other TØP fans I’ve spoken to, like their second album.
I’m on about Regional at Best, not Vessel.
This discounts No Phun Intended, as it was not a TØP Album.
@@juliprato so if RAB was actually good?
@@VM-od9su no phun intended was just tyler
What is it with artists having the opening track on an album being titled "Good Day"? I swear this is the third "Good Day" opener I've seen
Yeah, and ending it with a track called "the end"
Right, or like “Good Morning” in Graduation. I get why it’s done but it’s a bit old by now. Same with the endings of albums titled something related to the word “end”, ya know
It’s a play on Good Day America. It’s called Good Day Dema and it’s linked to the concept of the album.
Super replayable song, makes me feel happy and energised
I appreciate because they're taking it in a different direction while still feeling like twenty one pilots. Like it's way more indie synth pop than they've ever gone, but the writing and vocals still have the same personality (whether you consider that a good thing or not). I'm kinda excited to see how the rest of the album pans out.
This song is an absolute grower. I too didn't liked this song at first few listens. But I've kinda started to like this song a whole lot!
tyler getting into playing guitar is so cool to me as a fan for awhile: he always just stuck to bass or ukulele or piano, specifically saying once his "hands are too small" to play guitar, and i think it's a much needed and very interesting addition to their sound.
This is horrifying. Very visceral. Excellent job, I hate it.
YES! FINALLY! NOW I CAN FORM AN OPINION ABOUT IT!

After my first listen I thought it sounded as if Two Door Cinema Club made a song that was meant to go on P!ATD's Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die
but without the child abuse (?
That's really accurate wow
The too weird to live comparison is spot on, that 80s sound pallet is definitely here
@@alesoto6353 wdym?
Loved this track
Honestly, I was a huge fan of Vessel, and the sound of this album sounds more like where I expected them to go rather than the last 2 albums
New 21 pilots album is NOT TOO BAD

He liked their last album though so I don't know if that would work

@@rockthedwaynejohnson8188 cool buddy, I think Dwayne Johnson sucks at acting and is only famous because he’s the rock.

Since I’ve kept up with the storyline they are building, even though the track isn’t amazing, it builds the story really well and makes me realllly excited for the lo, we’ll see what happens!
I haven't been able to follow it all is it possible for you to give me summary?
how do you think the track is related to the universe? i am so into the story and the Dema album and everything but I didn't get the connections in this song :(
@@janine2957 personally, I think it being so sonically different than their other music is, itself, how it fits into the lore here.
@@arsonmusicc perfect, thanks a lot
I'm not in my tøp phase anymore for a good while but I'm actually real excited to see what scaled and icy will be like
It def a grower.
Bro said “not too bad” then proceeded to give the album a 2
Never clicked so fast
That must be what drew me to them. I was a big Killers fan back before I discovered Twenty One Pilots in 2013. I never put the two together but now that you say that it explains why I grew to like TOP so much. I tend to like most of what they put out because it's not always the same sound. I like the jumping around, mixing different genres and styles. I find it refreshing. I like not knowing what to expect with every new song. I've never been disappointed with what they put out. Everything from their self titled album up to now has been exciting to me. Cool sounds, great vocals, catchy/thoughtful lyrics, it's a great mix.
Anthony, in order to understand the song you need to be up to date with the story of dema and the bishops you see clancy is supposed to be tyler joseph trying to escape his insecurities and you can read his diary by analyzing the website's html5 coding and organizing it in alphabetical order and deciphering it and then putting it into a daw and then running it to a spectogram where you can see a map where the band's cousin's sister buried a hand-written diary in morse code with half of the lore you need to understand this deep masterpiece
underrated comment
I think the lighter feel of the song is showing how Tyler's mental state is getting better
people have been thinking its propaganda for dema if you look around, the happy feel might just be a fake
Considering him and Josh are being "held captive" by DEMA (a cult he created which represents depression) and this is supposed to be propaganda created by that cult, it's hard to believe that. I wish it were true though
Lol was literally just listening to this when this video popped up in my notifications. Quite a good song.
I honestly just thought this track was okay, not as good as anything from Trench, but still aight
In all seriousness, I really wish their next album is gonna be good😅
I felt like Shy Away sounded kinda boring but I liked the lyrical themes.
I could imagine a song like Leave The City to close off the album, but then it gets heavy sort of like Jumpsuit but a slower tempo to fit an ending
someone on the shy away mv mentioned that "scaled and icy" is an anagram of "clancy is dead"
well im not surprise if SAI theme is like shy away or level of concern type song but im not surprise either if it mix up like trench. TOP is really broad when it comes to their type of music genre lol
I loved their old sound so much and this seems like a step towards that direction again. It’s clearly different, but it’s a little bit closer than what Trench was.
The artwork is so cool
Much respect they are a great band
I was kinda expecting them to go to a different direction on this latest album and I was right. I like that the new album will probably be way lighter than Trench, something cheerful during the current global situation.
I was a bit anxious if I will be keen on the new single or not and I was surprised very pleasantly. It's such a nice song.
This feels kinda like a departure from their older sound while being kinda loyal to their past at the same time. Tbh my favorite song from them in a while.
Literally my first thought was Brandon Flowers so much that I opened Spotify to listen to him before finishing the song
the album cover looks like it could be on a monster energy can

Rearrange the album title “Scaled and Icy” and it spells: “Clancy Is Dead” ☠️
Clancy is the main character within the concept narrative of their last album “Trench” introduced in the music videos that immerse the listener into the world of the DEMA Universe. If you search “DEMA Explained” on RUclips, it’s fascinating to see how they’ve built an entire storyline through their last two albums, continuing with this next one.
this is one of my favorite twenty one pilots songs in a while. ive been listening to it on repeat lol
i’ve been waiting for this
Not my absolute favorite by any means, but that chorus is an instant hit for me, makes me feel everything I want to feel from a TØP song, whatever that means
Shy Away to me sounds like Fitz and The Tantrums meet Panic and dabble in The Strokes. Seems like they're moving away from doom and gloom and more towards a hopeful, motivational sound.
oh wow its been awhile when a Track Review hasnt had a clickbait title like "tHiS sOnG iS bAd" or "_____ STILL knows when to SLAP"
Yeah, I hope he stops those clickbait titles. The title of the track review for Olivia Rodrigo, for example, didn't really make sense with the video (though I agree with the title).
Please do choker soon man I’m really looking forward to it
I think it's cool and all that the 80s styled music is coming back... but the real question is when does the 60s beatles-esque sound make a comeback in pop music?
This sort of reminded me upon the style change Paramore went through with the release of After Laughter - which really turned out for the better. If this is twenty one pilot's After Laughter, I'm looking forward to it.
I kinda expected him to go like "Twanthony Oneantano here"
I agree with the thoughts you have on this one, I love the song being how different it is from trench and as much as I wanted them to continue down that path but I will say that this was a light fun song. Perfect for spring/ summer album
21 pilots coming out with music in 20 21’
I like the song but I kinda wish they kept going further with their trench sound
You can see what is written in the new album cover, it explains a lot.
i like it. lyrics inspired me, decent sound. i like it.
Is that the mustard tiger shirt from trailer park boys?
To me its like a good version of their last song Level of Concern. I do like it, its pretty different though.
Idk I think it's alright, I think TOP has done all they can do at this point but I'm still digging the song regardless
