It's not just the time I've invested watching the movies multiple times, add to that reading books, acting out scenes with childhood friends, playing with action figures (I used to freeze my Han Solo figure in a big ice cube), drawing star wars space battles in school instead of listening to the teacher, playing Star Wars Video Games at the arcade or at home. Add up the time just day dreaming about Star Wars. Let's not forget about all the time wasted you've tried to move something with the force (everyone has tried that). Star Wars was more than just movies, it was a massive part of some people's childhood. That's why some people are so angry about the path Disney has taken.

I saw Star Wars in 1977 as well. It was playing at the Metropolitan theatre in downtown Brooklyn. I will never forget the audience reaction to that film. It was electric and off the scale. The only thing that came close was Jurassic Park when it was released in 93'.

I remember seeing the Marvel comic book version of Empire a week or two before the movie was released in May 1980. I don’t know how or why they released the comic book before the movie, but I can’t remember looking at the illustrations (which weren’t very good) of Yoda, the Imperial Walkers, the asteroid chase etc. and thinking to myself, this is going to be so stupid. When the movie was released, my best friend and I took off from school and were in front of the line at 9:00 AM. By 12:00, the line stretched down the length of the mall. The theater was packed. The mood was electric, and when the movie started playing and the audience applauded, it was pure magic.

Age and experience apparently have a lot to do with one's reaction. I was 19 when Star Wars came out. I had been a science fiction reader for many years, at that point, and a follower (albeit non-rabid) of Star Trek. I quite enjoyed Star Wars, but I also could see that it was closer to a fairy tale than a science fiction story. I suspect the reason for Star Wars popularity is the simplicity, you can disengage your brain and go with the story...which is almost antithetical to a science fiction story. A year or so ago I logged onto a couple of Star Wars VS Star Trek sites just to gauge the differences in the fans. Star Wars fans are very emotionally invested "...Star Trek ships would always lose because they discuss the situation instead of attacking first..." (obviously not someone who spent time in the military and saw the results of flying off half-cocked). Likewise, "Star Destroyers are bigger and have more guns." The arguments were largely easily drawn albeit superficial.
Star Trek fans would talk about the relative invulnerability of a faster-than-light ship, with FTL sensors and weaponry, versus ships stuck at a small fraction of light speed. Trek fans would discuss weapons ranges, fire control, and so on. OK, this sort of thing is childish as a discussion ... albeit fun.
The conclusion I drew was that Star Wars fans are largely emotionally invested in the action sequences, spectacle being mandatory. Star Trek fans were more oriented to the intellectual aspects. These conclusions are probably obvious on inspection, but I read through hundreds of posts and, while I saw some individual posts that ran counter to type, the trend was obvious. I concluded that Star Wars movies should adhere to a 'good versus evil' theme that is very clear, with a lot of action to resolve conflicts. Obviously, the Acolyte missed the point. Star Trek should probably makes out better if the solution is largely intellectual, with some action to lend excitement. Intelligence has been absent since Enterprise went off the air.

I am 2 years younger than Rob and had much the same experience. We lived Star Wars for three years, Empire came out and we lived that for three years. Jedi came out, I left the theater in a state of numbness. That's the day I learned that the people who make the things we love don't necessarily love it the same way we do.

The only thing made by Disney that I accept as genuine Star Wars is _Rogue One._ The movie has flaws, for sure, and some of them annoy me, but as RMB said, RotJ had its flaws as well. I suppose it boils down to respecting essential aspects the franchise, as established by the OT. I even rate _Rogue One_ higher than the _Prequels._ Everything else that I have (not) seen by Disney is utter trash.

I liked Rogue One, even with it's flaws... Some folks complain because of the ending, but I grew up watching all sorts of stuff... Tragedies are great when done right... I actually felt sadness and a sense of triumph at the end, because although it ends like it does, I felt attached to the two characters... I was drawn in to their story... Some of the best foreign films I've seen were tragedies... Just look at traditional Japanese stories and movies, where tragedy is a big theme...

There’s an interview with Lucas pre the release of Star Wars in ‘77 that’s included with the official screenplay book where he talks about wanting it to be a story for children, but what he meant at the time was that it was a story about the onset of adulthood and choosing who you will grow up to be - he didn’t mean it would be childish in tone, but that its themes would resonate with a young audience.
Now, he had no idea of that he actually created a universal story for all ages, like the wizard of Oz, that’s just lightning in a bottle that you can’t plan for. We’re now a few generations down the line and people have never outgrown it, so it’s now demonstrably true that it’s not just for kids - there’s depth there that people come back to.
I think he himself never grasped that.

Loony Toons was never for children. It was adult content in the guise of juvenile humor that everyone enjoyed.
It’s a modern misconception that it was ever was for kids.
The adult humor would fly over the kids heads while the parents would get the jokes.
It was brilliant marketing. Parents brinjng their kids to the theater could enjoy the intermission animation that was common for that early era of theaters.

Sure the aspect ratio is a little runty but all the beats are in their right places. I forgot in ESB Luke says to Artoo after being spit up by the Dagobah Swamp Creature, "Good thing you don't taste very good" that's been cut out since the 1997 Special Edition. All this and the Yub Nub song. It's the only way for me to enjoy it anymore. And you think by now we would have got a Revenge of the Sith Special Edition restoring all of Padme's scene's found on that bonus disc with her basically inventing the Rebellion.

In hindsight relative and to tgis era, in the coming years since, looking at what is been out NOW.. minus Rogue One, minus the first two seasons of mandalorian and minus Andor. Andor is very good. Anyways - - The prequels are fairly enjoyable stories and visually good star wars and consistent storytelling by George Lucas. It' wild where we are now for me to say this with an almost some since of regret.

Thank you very much for doing this video... Love listening to your take on various subjects when it comes to cinematic entertainment... I grew up on Star Wars myself, even though my first experience was when New Hope debuted on TV... I knew of it before that, but our family was not theater goers during most of the 70's... I love Star Trek more, but that does not diminish my love of Star Wars... As you mentioned, each one was unique in what made them both great for me... I was exposed to Star Trek first as a kid growing up in the 70's, and in fact it was the only day of the week I was allowed to stay up past my bedtime to watch...
As to more modern Star Wars content, I agree that Disney doesn't look at the IP in the same way as pre-Disney, for the most part... Of course, Disney has other internal issues these days, as compared to 2012, that in my opinion makes matters worse for content, but that is a different subject... Fans of long standing and beloved IP's love to defend the things they love... So, for some fans they feel attacked when companies like Disney don't care about the fans, and even openly attack them in sinister ways... It's the vitriol from Disney, that honestly was always there, when it comes to criticism from fans, doesn't help the perception Disney wants for themselves... But it's not a new tactic for big corporations to do something like that... It's just exaggerated by the Internet, and lack of honestly and civility from Access Media, who is in the midst of their own crisis of relativity and lost Ad revenue...
In the end, I will always love Star Wars as it was, and it does sadden me to a certain extent that the newer generations are losing out on all the great things Cinema used to be... Perhaps that is one of the reasons Fans feel hurt these days... What has worked in the past was older generations exposing newer generations to great cinematic works, which perhaps is no longer happening to the same degree as it once was... Or perhaps it is a mix of many factors inherent to the modern climate, where newer generations are disinteresting in anything not associated to the internet? Overall, I think many different factors are at play, and perhaps it's just a perception of a faltering fandom, and fear of our beloved IP's falling to the passage of time?

I share your assessment of Jedi as being a drop in quality from A New Hope and Empire. Although I enjoyed it at the time of its initial release (mostly for the visuals, John William’s score, and the confrontation between Luke and the Emperor), it did not live up to the standard established by the first two films. It felt like Star Wars had been taken over by the Muppets. This is not a criticism of Jim Henson’s creative genius, but rather a dumbing it down creatively to appeal more to younger kids and therefore sell more toys. It’s pretty much been the same ever since with the notable exception of Rogue One and Andor and some of the Mandalorian episodes that don’t focus too heavily on Grogu.

  • @David-hc4xh
    @David-hc4xh Месяц назад

The trouble with the original Star Wars is that it was such a cultural phenomenon that it’s bigger than Disney, we all have an opinion on it. George Lucas’ original vision was a futuristic fairytale for children however its intoxicating mix of genres combining fairytale, western and sci-fi proved to be beloved by all. The competing creative visions of Lucas and Gary Kurtz is well documented with Return of the Jedi back being closer to George Lucas’ original vision. The prequels and original trilogy tell George Lucas’ original conception of Star Wars which he had to condense down to its digestible form for Episode 4. The Star Wars many of us love is not necessarily the Star Wars George Lucas intended and certainly not the one being produced by Disney.

While I have seen Star Wars over 100 times, it is the only star wars movie I have not seen in a theater. Probably will have to wait until the 50th anniversary. George Lucas, Ralph McQuarrie and John Williams breathed life into Star Wars and the fans took it from there. I have a love for the Cloud Car from empire because I had one as a kid. I would fly it around and it had swooshability. I never had a TIE fighter or Millennium Falcon, but I loved my Cloud Car.

I don’t hate Nu Star Wars. I actually think Andor and Rogue One were really good. I think the animated shows like The Bad Batch are good and Visions is cool. The High Republic is also generally good…
However, I feel it’s often a bit… shallow. The original films - even the prequels - had depth, artistic integrity (though many will disagree), vision. However in the Disney era, SW has reached that critical mass that most franchises reach at some point, where instead of new stories expanding the universe naturally, the drive is flipped on its head and they are expanding the universe for its own sake in search of new stories. Andor was one of the exceptions that many franchises always have (like Batman TAS, Dark Knight Trilogy or Arkham games), but are usually, well, the exception rather than the rule.
What they do nail imo is the sense of it all being a. Injected universe, something the other bis “Star” franchise has struggled with recently, although I feel they have had more success in doing something different than had been done before. Say what you will about Strange New Worlds, it is definitely a ahow with vision - you may not like that vision and disagree with it - but I prefer that to the undead drama that was Obi-Wan Kenobi.

He said the exact same things Rob alluded to in his articulation and detail. My dad had been telling me these things and was the one who got me into starwars in the very early 1990s, and as a millennial born in the 1980s, all I did was watch the VHS trilogy over and over and over It was Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi. Being made for kids and being popular with adults is not mutually exclusive. Kids movies can be amazing stories that adults can revel in as well. Tolkien wrote the Hobbit for his young son, and that launched the greatest fantasy series of all time. You're taking issue with George saying Star Wars was made for kids because of the notion that something being made for kids automatically devalues it. The damage that has been done to kids media by this idea has been nothing short of catastrophic, and insisting that Star Wars couldn't be made for kids because it was easily enjoyed by everyone is only going to contribute to that. Star Wars is for kids, there's nothing wrong with that. Adults should not feel bad for being able to lose themselves in something that was crafted for the child inside of them.
When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

Maybe you don’t like Return of The Jedi because Lucas has always maintained the movies are aimed at 12 year olds. You were 16 and didn’t like the stuff aimed at 12 year olds you loved before. Yoda and Jawas are not that much different then Ewoks. Yes Yoda sometimes states sone spiritual statements but at the end of the day he’s a cute muppet fighting with R2/D2. I was 11 when Jedi came out and I loved everything about it. I liked it more than Empire. Bought the Speedwr Bike toy and Jabba’s place playset. The Biker Scout, Gamorean Guard and Imperial Guard were my favorite figures along with Bausch Leia. And I went through it with Phantom Menace. A generation of 12 year olds loved it while I was left scratching my head.

All top of the line creatures.. the biker scout chase through the trees was amazing. The Ewoks were even cool to an 11 year old.
