Now nearly 90, they still do it for me, has their LP back in the when... Walt Kelly on clarinet, drew the Pogo strip cartoon, coined the phrase 'we have seen the enemy and they is us...' never more relevant!
When I was young, when the radio in the car played FF2, my father would turn the volume up and everyone had to be quiet. Yes, I too fell in love with them and purchased their records/cd's. When everyone in college was playing rock, I was playing FF2. I am 77. My uncle formed a dixieland band that played Turk Murphy and FF2 style. My father and I had our differences, but we could always listen to music together.
Back in the 1950's (beginning in about '51 or '52) I began listening to the Firehouse Five Plus Two on Saturday and Sunday mornings when WDAF (I believe) would play short films--the precursor of music videos. They played Liberace, Korla Pandit, the "Indian" Organist actually from St. Louis, I believe, Spike Jones (the original one) and his City Slickers, Firehouse Five and others. I absorbed Ed Penner's style of bass line and applied it when I began playing in a "west coast" style jazz band in the late '60's in the Phoenix, Az area and later in Los Angeles. I had the pleasure of meeting them at what they told us was their last show on the road at the German American Club in Phoenix in 1970. George Bruns let me try his single B♭tuba. (I played a Conn 20K tuba and a 20J Sousaphone, both BB♭) They were all truly friendly and I miss them a lot. Of all the west coast bands they were really the best, in my opinion, in every way.
I was a 20 yr old kid in '51 at San Francisco State, knew nothing about Dixieland. Some music students invited me one Sun. evening to the Club Hangover (ads had to call it the Club Hanover). The Firehouse Five was playing. What a memorable evening!
1951/53 I trained on SNJ, F8F and F6F with the US Naval aviation in Pensacola and Kingsville. I found time enough to drive to New Orleans and learned to love that marvelous music in Bourbon street, Mahogany hall!. I love your country, especially your Navy.
Wow. For decades I've had a couple of their albums on vinyl but never saw them play live. Any musician can appreciate their talent, especially as this was just a hobby for these guys who worked as Disney animators by day.
These guys were actually artists and animators who worked in L.A. For Walt Disney and, I believe, Warner Brothers. Ward Kimball who was with Disney was the organizer.
Love the good ol fire house five plus two in my opinion they are one of those oddball bands like the Royal Guardsman that started off as kind of a gag like then became a famous lovable band, nothing like seeing Disney content to Disney’s personal artists by day and band members by night The Firehouse Five Plus Two
re: the few who dislike this, why are you even listening to Dixieland music? As far as this genre goes, this is excellent. Some people can't be pleased.
I've just seen on our (UK) TV where Ward Kimball was mentioned , that he was lead animator at Walt Disney Studios and was responsible for the image that we all know as Mickey Mouse. Mickey appeared first in a film called "Steamboat Willie" in 1928. But Ward Kimball, now in his new job, didn't like how Mickey looked. He likened him to a rat.So he changed his body shape making him a bit more plump, filled his cheeks out a bit and altered the shape of his ears. The much friendlier result was that he became the cartoon character that we all now recognise.I was a great fan of the F H 5 back in the late 50s, and still am.I believe that the band was made up from staff of the Walt Disney studios who had a fascination for vintage fire engines. and loved Dixieland Jazz.
1951? This was my introduction to Dixieland when I was 20 yrs old; A selection of music students invited me to hear them at the Hangover Club in SF. In those days the radio ads had to call it the "Hanover Club" to comply with all the restrictions put in place by the bluenoses. The moment I entered the club I was hooked on Dixieland, and still am. Whenever I'm down I put the FF5+2 on RUclips to regain my sense of Yuma (I spent some time in Arizona).
To the nine idiot gainsayers who's thumbs don't work - 'What can you possibly NOT like about this? Moving on to music lovers; we should all thank our relevant gods for the people out there who make the time and take the effort to post this kind of thing. If it wasn't for the likes of them, this wonderous music would be but a distant memory and very nearly impossible for lots of us in the 21st century to access and appreciate.
Love this tune. I first discovered this through Asleep At The Wheel's cover. That got me diving in to discover more from Bennie Moten. I absolutely love swing and upbeat music like this. Thank you for posting up the Firehouse Five + Two!
I feel there is no other band coming close to the fullness and richness of balanced sound and skill these band has. They are so outstanding talented and one can feel the fun they had in there performances. I so much wish I could get life performance films from this band. If someone can tell me where to get them I would deeply appreciate it.

I grabbed my fake id and entered the club. The moment I heard them I knew I'd found my favorite kind of music...still love it.
Still trying to keep it alive. Sacramento jazz scene just started a new festival set for Labor Day weekend. Bob Ringwald and the Fulton Street Jazz Band highlights a great 4 days of HOT JAZZ and lots of good times. See Hot Jazz Jubilee in Rancho Cordova for more information.

Bands of this kind are notoriously difficult to record. Guys are moving around, pointing in different directions, raising and lowering their volume, etc. The quality of these recordings, esp. coming from ca. 1951, is just astonishing.
As a 20 something year old that loves old school jazz, these fellas sure kick arse!!! So happy to find em.
A great bunch of musicians who brought joy and laughter to their repertoire, and didn't take themselves too seriously despite their great talent.
Now nearly 90, they still do it for me, has their LP back in the when... Walt Kelly on clarinet, drew the Pogo strip cartoon, coined the phrase 'we have seen the enemy and they is us...' never more relevant!
My dad turned me onto these guys many years ago, when I was just a teenager. Now 75, I still enjoy them immensely. This is the happiest music I know.

Cela fait 61 ans que je les écoute, toujours avec le même plaisir. Avec eux, adieu la mélancolie !
Now that is what I called music.
Wow. For decades I've had a couple of their albums on vinyl but never saw them play live. Any musician can appreciate their talent, especially as this was just a hobby for these guys who worked as Disney animators by day.
Frank Thomas and the boys! God as an animator this makes me so happy :)!
These guys were actually artists and animators who worked in L.A. For Walt Disney and, I believe, Warner Brothers. Ward Kimball who was with Disney was the organizer.
Walt Disney let them play as a band provided they did not give up their jobs. Walt was very strict. He would have black people in the band either.

Obviously tin-eared 'pop' fans !
The two thumbs down are from the Banjo players mum and dad they wanted him to be a classical pianist.
