What an amazing work. I'd only heard 2, 4, 5. Must listen to them all. Wish this performance was available on CD - I can't imagine any other being quite as fierce.
terrific performance of a great mid century British symphony, and what a start to an amazing series by Arnold (though the string symphony - unnumbered - is a little earlier. this performance crack a much faster pace than Arnold's own and is much the better for in my humble opinion. I love his cheeky tunes against the grit.
Corrado Spaviero I think he gets the brashness, pomp and the tension right and the orchestra respond and play with authority. Just of course my opinion
@@pdamianrees I think you're right, the last mvt in particular - no nonsense but everything is in it's place. I traveled up to Manchester that year for an all Arnold prog. with BBC Phil/Gamba including Tam and also the 5th., both stunning performances so well directed.
The only Arnold Symphony I'd never heard. Couldn't be anyone else really.

rare piece
Those wind chords around 4' are gorgeous
Finally! An English composer whose music I really like.
What? You don’t like Walton’s 2 symphonies? As for his 3 concertos, violin, viola and cello, remarkable works best of their genre 😊
@@paullewis2413Walton 1 is my favourite British symphony. What about VW as well brilliant symphonies.
Great work. Powerfull and provocative. Thumbs up...
Many thanks for uploading all these recordings of Arnold's symphonies! Great to listen to.
+Tracotel You're very welcome : )
A superb piece, superbly played. He is a great master composer, too tragically overlooked for being mainstream.
writing a symphony isn't mainstream lol
A treasure.
