Dude I relate to this problem so much and I feel like I'm going through the same thing. I only ever feel confident when I dress up/well, but right now I don't know what clothes/style makes me look best (if that makes any sense) or good even. I feel like clothing used to help me feel so confident but now it will make or break my day. Thanks for bringing this up because I thought I was being dramatic

it's so crazy how much of our confidence is rooted in how we feel towards our own looks, whether it be through fashion, hair, or weight. although i also feel the same way, it's hard to not get caught up on those feelings and tear ourselves down. but in reality, i think we're all too harsh on ourselves. like many other people commenting, i think that your sense of style is so well-put together and unique that i sometimes think, "oh only she could think of an outfit like this or pull this off". you really are amazing so please remember to give yourself the credit you deserve.

basic is unique in a way babes. your style can change everyday, you don't have to look a certain vibe all the time. you don't need other people's attention, you only need to know that everything that makes you you are what matters individually.

Hey❤️ I may not know you personally however I care about you deeply because I know how much you mean to Jesus Christ The King of ALL CREATION . I want to tell you that Jesus Christ loves you so much, he died for our sins so that whoever believes in him wouldn’t have to perish in hell but instead have eternal life in heaven. You need to understand that HEAVEN and HELL are 1000% REAL they aren’t imaginary , and hell is a horrible place I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. God doesn’t want you to end up there he wants you in heaven and so he is giving you a chance to accept the sacrifice of his son Jesus Christ and be saved. Day by Day the world is falling apart because we are literally living in the last days of Earth there is no doubt or debate about it, Jesus Christ is coming faster then you think to bring judgement to the world and to destroy it. This really is URGENT, it’s NOT A JOKE ,Tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone, you can be alive one minute and gone the next, please take this opportunity to be on the side of Mercy confess your sins and wicked ways to Jesus , sincerely REPENT/turn away from them, ask for his forgiveness, and be baptized at a real bible believing church- ask him to enter your heart and to be your Lord and Savior before it is too late , truly believe in him and he WILL do it because it is his promise. It’s important that you seek the righteous and Holy path of the Most high God so that you may inherit eternal life and be spared of Hell fire. You can begin a new life in Christ and have a genuine relationship with him, please repent. Jesus changed my life and he will change yours too🥰, He is coming NOW! not SOON- when you least expect it!, therefore repent and make sure you are prepared. May the Lord be with you eternally💕🙏🏾

I'm late to the party but this is such an interesting topic, honestly. We're constantly bombarded with pictures of influencers and trends, and aesthetics and vibes and it can be difficult to figure out whether you actually like something for yourself or whether you just like something on someone else, or because you just think 'this is what the cool people are wearing and I also want to be part of that crowd'. It's really easy to impulse buy stuff, and then never wear it because it looked great on someone else, and it's just not really 'our own' style. Or practical. Here's my take and how I am figuring out what I want to wear: (but I mostly wrote this to think about it myself so sorry for taking up comment space haha, its ok if no one ever reads it!!!!)
Influencers have the time (and money) to build outfits and make the best, creative, flattering photos, with awesome brands, often with sponsorships (so things can be expensive). And maybe they don't have to stand on their feet all day for their work, so they can wear heels or something revealing or whatever. That's their real job, to inspire us with creative ways of looking at fashion, to share new and cool brands and ideas around trends, aesthetics, vintage or sustainability. An important thing here of course is that next to this, which I think is very valuable, it's also marketing with product placement, aiming at selling a lot of clothes to their viewers. Which is what we have to be conscious of.
I try really hard nowadays to firstly not do any impulse buys, to really picture wearing something outside (to work, on free days, vacation, parties, etc), and whether I would feel like myself (and comfortable) wearing it in 'real life', specifically my own life. Which doesn't involve a lot of cool events or red carpets (or hot weather). It's not always bad to buy something just because it beautiful of course, you can also enjoy fashion as an aesthetic thing instead of it always having to be practical.
Then secondly, I've been trying to really think about what suits me and what fashion builds up my identity and I what I feel myself in. For example, for me that would be early exposure to skate culture/hiphop (I'm a millennial hehe. so dickies, vans, oldschool styles of adidas and nike, streetwear), menswear (blazers, knits, academia grandpa style), but also pinks/poofy/girly, 90s/00s.. which also corresponds to how I feel day by day, sometimes I feel more feminine and chill to wear a dress (which makes me feel a bit vulnerable at times), sometimes I need a protective layer and wear looser stuff, or I feel a bit more 'boyish' that day, or I really need a balance of feminine/masculine vibes that day, etc. Figuring out what colors I feel most myself in also really helped. And don't forget you can have and mix many aesthetics, pretty much no one is just one thing. And we also constantly change, as does our style and what we have a need for (comfort, quiet or actually standing out and experimenting).

I loved hearing the story of your fashion journey, especially as another quiet Asian girl in high school who got known for her cute outfits / being the fashionable one. Fashion (especially styling hand-me-downs & thrift store finds, since I was lower income and that was the only way I could afford new clothes) definitely became part of my identity because of those years. And it’s so true that there are moments when you lose your sense of style because you lose touch with yourself, but you’ll find that joy in your style again! Like with life there’s always ups and down. Thank you for taking us along your journey

  • @sh4yBP

My friend was going through a moment where she hated her hair after she paid enormous amounts of money for it to get done. So then she obviously started talking about how bad it looks so don't be discouraged that you're not the only one experiencing this problem. But it made me think of the time where this girl in middle school said that her hair plays a big role in her mood. Which is literally so validdddd we look at ourselves all the time so it's easy for us to put ourselves down on our appearances. Other people might not think your style is basic/un-unique because there's a lot of unstylish people out there! So be more compassionate with yourself and try not to think what you deem is important in your life as ~stupid~ Identity is what makes us who we are so don't water yourself down or discredit your style journey. I suggest writing down 10 things you like about your style and that way you'll grow an even deeper appreciation to your identity in the fashion aspect!!! Love your content :)

for me, confidence is not only tethered to how you look externally but how you feel internally and if you dont feel good in either aspect then maybe its good to try and take a step back so that you can regain the lost understanding of who you are and who you want to present yourself as. even if you are wearing "basic" or "copycat" outfits of other people, you are still unique in the fact that you put the outfit together and added your own touch/flair to it. the uniqueness stems from what you do with what you have, rather than what it looks like. kind of like if its a basic outfit but theyre pieces you love yk, its something that is unique to you because of how toy feel about it and what you did with it.
tldr: everyones unique and you dont need to prove anything to anyone in order to show your uniqueness. how you feel right now might just be something you need to work on, but that doesnt mean that itll be a forever thing. you make things what you want them to be :)
sending all the love !! your hair looks amazing and i love your style too !!

I relate to this so much dude. Honestly, if I don't look good I literally don't feel good. It's horrible. Even with style stuff, I really beat down on my style and want to be unique and different. But then I see trends and stuff and follow them and feel a lil good and better. And even though I know I do it, and it's kinda bad, I still do it because of habit and I find it soothing. And all the other stuff like patriarchy, consumerism etc that affects why we care about our appearance. Ugh just ugh. But thank you for being honest and creating a safe space. Sending love Linsi xx.

wow i literally thought i was the only person who felt this way. for the longest time i didnt know who i was and how i appeared to others. id spend hundreds of dollars on clothes from shein or yesstyle bc everyone was doing it and i would never wear any of them because i hated what i see in the mirror and i felt like i wasnt ME. so i stuck to my comfort zone and wore sweat pants + oversized tees bc being out in the streets pretending to be another person was literally so stressful.
but after awhile, i learned that when uve been on earth for awhile, i had to learn how to not give a crap. i know it's cliche to say this, but really sorting through clothes after clothes that you didnt like became physically exhausting. i started to wear whatever i want, because it made ME happy. i started to get into thrifting and tbh whatever i find is all i wear now. some people would judge me and tell me "dude why are you buying second hand clothes when u can wear so and so" but you know what?? i am ME and they are THEM. im not hurting anyone and i finally love myself, so no one is going to take that happiness away from me after i struggled with my identity for so long.

"My silly little outfit became my voice"
I related to this so much. I've always thought of myself as a boring bookish girl in her myopia glasses, even tho I never made a big deal out of it. Then the pandemic came and suddenly Pinterest world opened up to me and luckily there's a lot of thrift stores to buy things for my style. Slowly I became the "aesthetic girl" at my class... My juniors admiring my clothes thinking that it was pricey and they get shocked when I say it's only from a thrift store at our market. I'm also introverted so I keep my opinions to myself, so I had to find a way to express myself and I did thru styling and dressing up.
Style is much more than looking good. It could tell us a lot about ourselves. It could be our way of expressing and baring ourself to the people around us. Or for me, a form of self love. So I really get annoyed and upset when people say that dressing up is so vain and pretentious. So all in all, nice video.

girl i get u. it might be vain or simpleminded but it’s true. for everyone. at the end of the day u gotta wear what makes u feel good and confident. not comfortable coz i’m blending in but comfortable coz i’m being myself. and YES to the beauty of department store shopping. i went into a kohls for the first time in like 2-3 years and i got really cute quality stuff at great prices. seeing things in person makes a huge difference.

recently, Ive had too completely overhaul the way I approach exercise. My whole childhood, I was obsessed with wanting a flat stomach, felt like I couldn't wear anything because of my body type. I know it came from family - brown, immigrant families have no filter or awareness of the impact of their comments. Now I try really hard to work out because its medicine for my depression and try to remember its not about pushing myself to oblivion every time I get on the mat. I live my the notion of consistent mediocrity now, just a consistent 60% effort for my brain.
I began posting my workouts on my channel, so I'd have a visual to SEE with my own eyes, that I'm getting stronger, and better at yoga/pilates and exercise isnt just about trying to be thin.

I have the same kind of feeling that you have whenever I go outside, and I´m not sure if this may help but whenever I have a wrong feeling about my clothes in public I just remember that the same way I think "wow that person´s outfit slay and I look like shit" someone else is thinking the same about me, at least one person. so take and deep breath and relax bc people who don´t slay are the ones that jugdes others about their style and confidence

as someone who was born and raised in NYC, I can attest that everyone dresses so fucking fine here! Its so overwhelming to go outside because I'm always thinking about my outfit. I live in bklyn, but whenever I go to Manhattan, I always pull out my nicest clothes. even though I have a pretty unique fashion style, I still get lost in the crowds

I understand the issues with style and identity. I go through a lot of shifts of dressing down or not doing my makeup because either I don't have time for it or I try to make myself efficient without necessarily needing to "look good". It goes okay for a while but recently I haven't been liking my clothes or my makeup and I've been getting to a point where I realized I am not treated as nicely without it. It is not great that people are ruder to those they don't view as attractive but these interactions, matched with me not wanting to dress up better have been kicking me down more and more. The other day I decided to wake up early like I would when I was in school; with extra time to do my makeup, pick an outfit, etc. and while it felt great I realized I don't know what my style is at the moment. Clothes are something I fluctuate with all the time so this isn't a surprise that an outfit I pick out at 7am doesn't feel right by noon but the frustrations are real and affect your confidence and just how you feel day to day. I want comfort because I have long days where I am out and about for 12-14 hours but I don't feel like me because of this. I want to find a middle ground but comfortable styles are not necessarily my style lol. Anyways, it may feel silly to have an identity crisis over clothes but if clothes and appearance and that sense of individuality matter to you then it is important! I hope you are able to improve on how you've been feeling but sometimes a little crisis helps build you, it just takes time :)

Watch fashion shows. They’ll teach you so much about different styles and open your eyes to styles that you didn’t even know you might like.
Then I go to vintage stores and try to replicate the styles I liked on the runway :)

I think style is important and it's totally valid to be having a crisis over it. When I get style crisis's I try to take it as an opportunity to wear something I wouldn't have worn before idk something to sort of open my mind. But also you don't need to necessarily fit into a 'style' you can dress with multiple if you want I remember falling into that trap many times

I know I am one year late but i want to share that I'm also feeling that way recently. My hometown was third ranked city in my country but people from my city like to wear casually in their daily basic. Growing with that environment, I also wear casually and don't think too much about outfit beside I, myself is introvert and like to stay at home. Not long ago i moved out from my hometown which I live for 17 years. The city I am currently living is second ranked and the most important city economically for my country. After moving to new city, I feel overwhelmed by new life style in here. Everyone on the road they look nice, wear amazing outfit and get their makeup done nicely. I feel like I'm the odd one out. The thoughts that I don't have style like them, don't have capability to do my makeup like them and don't fit this place are running in my head wildly.

Ive felt this exact same way so many times. The most stylish thing you can wear is whatever tf you want. Everyone is trying too hard to be a fashion revolutionary and unless you are hand creating each piece in your closet by hand you are basic so who cares?
Fashion cycles are so polarizing they have become vertigo inducing. Its like one day simple/chic is chic then basic and intensely unique/ eclectic style is fashionable then tacky again.
Aesthetic is finally dying and that is a GOOD THING.

I’m 17 in NY and I’m too scared to leave the house in my own, my sister and parents are too busy and I rely on them whenever I want to go out, I don’t even have friends to hang out with. i just wish I could go thrifting and these videos are so comforting to me
