  • With the release of The Acolyte, we are once again reminded that Disney isn't done kicking the corpse of Star Wars just yet. Leslye Headland's new diversity project has flopped on its face right out of the gates with its illogical writing, painful dialogue and boring plot.
Join me as we discuss the first two episodes of the show and the contradictions contained within The Acolyte.

For real. In the very first seconds, Jedi Master Trinity Whatshername was SO smug and arrogant. Then every other Jedi except the Asian guy was also arrogant, corrupt, and/or incompetent.
Seriously, you capture the suspected killer of a Jedi *master* and then put them on a space bus, unguarded, and are like, "I'll see you back at the station."
They screamed, "We deserve to be overthrown because we are -The- -patriar- I mean...the bad guys.
No. Stop painting villains as good guys and heroes as incompetent, corrupt, antagonists.

@@noahheninger I think you need to check the dictionary. Hubris would suggest that they were overly confident. Complacent in the first place movie and overwhelmed in the second and third would, to me, be more accurate. They tried to do their job, as they understood it, and were killed for it. Hubris would be Palpatine thinking he had everything under control until Vader tossed him down that shaft.

Serious question. What's it like, as a woman, to know that this was allegedly created specifically to target you, a female viewer, and it's complete, utter shit? Personally, I'd be insulted. Do they expect you to like it, or at least publicly say you like it, regardless of quality? Do they expect you to be grateful?

I know you're asking Nerdword, but I'll chime in anyway =)
Real women don't care about this feminist/woke crap... and the women part of woke culture probably aren't even watching this crap anyway. They're too busy reading online articles like the racist/sexist lead actors word vomit. The women saying this is empowering and a great step for women are full of crap... they've probably never seen it, never watched Star Wars, and are on an agenda and brainwashed by the left and woke culture. Since that's backfiring lately, now the goal of the left has moved to brainwashing children which is disgusting. How we keep voting in these tyrants is beyond comprehensible, but even parents are getting fed up with it now.
Like men, most women just want a good movie or show. Women generally gravitate towards a more elaborate story, comedy, drama, etc. while men usually gravitate towards sci-fi/action. Both sexes can obviously enjoy all genres as long as the movie itself is good.
The problem with Disney lately... is outside of woke messaging being shoved in your throat, the material just flat out sucks. Video game industry is going through the same thing.

What's evident for me, is shows like this are not about entertaining the audience but an ego trip for those making them. It's just virtue signalling, or worse, elite status signalling. How many people who want to make a film or TV show get to make one? Not many, so if you do, you have elite status within the industry & your peer group. It's all very narcissistic.
This show wasn't made to entertain an audience, it was made to appease egos & agendas.

Precisely correct - this is Darth KK, Harvey Weinstein's former secretary, and others like them (and especially the Blackrock type investment figures that bankroll them behind the scenes) seeking to highlight the fact that they have the money, power and connections to use and abuse a once great IP with impunity. The see themselves as more than even the elite, but something akin to a neo-feudal ruling class or even contemporary Olympian gods, and they see the rest of us as simply neo-serf scum beneath their contempt and not fit even to lick their boots. Stunts like desecrating IPs that millions of people once loved are intended to remind us of what they think is our proper (and lowly) place.

We as Fans just have to keep mocking this show, really bomb it, NOT with official RT bad scores, but just bombard it with memes gallore. The worst kind of INSULT you can give anyone is Mockery. Remember when all the fans laughed at that Sonic movie trailer? What did Sony do next, they panicked and rushed to re-amend the "Sonic" character design back to his original self, best decision they made ever.
This is what Disney will end up being forced to do, if we just keep showing them we don't give a monkeys what they do anymore, it will just keep hurting their bottom line, and things will get so bad they'll have no choice but to fix up, clean house at Lucasfilm, meaning KK leaves, maybe Filoni get creatively castrated and *Star Wars* can get back to it's greatness.

In SW's latest products dealing with the Jedi, the master-student relationship is clearly discredited... if one of the two is male. Luke is a loser, who is only recovered by Rey's lecture, and in fact the responsibility of training her passes almost entirely to Leia between one film and another (and this beyond the death of Carrie Fisher, I don't think they hadn't already thought to this resolution).
Here too, the apprenticeship relationship seems to be skipped, because in today's films no one can be superior, no one can tell the young person "calm down! you still have a lot to learn".
I may be dark (after all, it's just a television series), but it seems to me to be a transfer of the social reality of many areas (especially related to study) into a show which, technically, should also provide moral values to the viewer.

Quality of writing aside, I’ve gotten really tired of Disney adding so many “different sides” to it. Originally, Star Wars was a tale of good and evil, Jedi and Sith. Light sabers were simply green/blue, or red.
Now, there’s 20 different color sabers and shapes. There have been like three shows now with people in “grey areas”, and now we should be questioning the “good” in the Jedi?
There’s nothing wrong with leaving a simple story as is and stop messing with it. People love Lord of the Rings and its simple tale of “good vs evil”; i dread the day a company wants to add shows after LOTR with stupid “was the fellowship really good?” ideas.

Let the conversastions begin? I haven't seen you respond to any comments on any of your videos.
When Jedi fight, I imagine it's both with lightsabers and through the force, simultaneously. The dark side clouds judgement and makes the future hard to see so I can accept that a Jedi Master was tricked and killed during a duel. Also I knew it was coming so I wasn't all that surprised or upset. I wish Mae had taken up Indara's lightsaber and we'd seen a slice downwards before a quick cut away to really hammer it home that, though. More so everyone would stop saying how stupid it is that knife kills but lightsaber don't. Dead's dead.
You can't complain about lack of character development then say the Yord topless scene was unnecessary. As usual, the male characters are ironically the best part of the woke propaganda machine. Yord is the type who always seems to get caught with his pants down and will immediately stop what he's doing to follow protocol. He's headstrong and eager to prove himself and Master Sol, the other best thing about the show, is reassuring.
I think they also tried to make Jeckie cool or funny or endearing in this moment but she's 19 and it misses the mark. It's a real detriment to her character otherwise shown as being intelligent.
Sol again proving he's a true Jedi Master when Jeckie shows her intelligence, unfortunately she's abrasive but she is young, with the plan to question Qimir. He listens to her, but goes one step further, perceiving the larger threat and allowing the questioning to continue a little longer before making the bust. Jeckie enters the shop from the back during the arrest scene which I thought was a good way to show that she's smart. These good little moments of show rather than tell are few and far between and it's a shame they tried to make her likeable or cool or funny and instead just made her come across as uppity when she could've just been a smart character.
My major gripes with the show so far are the Jedi having a larger political agenda. They're knights in service to the Republic and exist on Coruscant by the Republic's grace. They can and do live just as easily in isolation or among the people and when they do intervene there is much debate as to the extent of it, as we still see in the prequels.
The other thing is the Jedi unaliving himself. It doesn't make sense for a Jedi to do that, it doesn't make sense in the SW universe and that it's somehow acceptable or even welcomed is the wrong message for Disney to be allowing. It's not the Jedi way but even more for a Jedi that has been meditating as penance for a decade. The show acts as though Torbin is completely shut down when the fact that he's meditating on the force means that he's confronting and dealing with his inner turmoil and the result being that he's waiting for atonement through unaliving instead of striving to live and do better is so backwards and wrong, from Disney, from the SW universe and in our own everyday lives.

Interesting that the people being attacked as misogynistic and bigoted are the same outsiders who were often picked on for liking scifi and fantasy in their youth, these worlds and stories were an escape from the constant berating as well as the expectation to conform and be normal. These fandoms have always been an accepting and open environment where anyone (of any gender, race and sexual orientation) could find acceptance. Now we find ourselves being berated, attacked, expected to conform and in every sense bullied by the normies and film school rejects, who were too good for and/or wanted nothing to do with these fandoms when they were niche.

To choose a random property, if you were hiring someone for a Care Bears film, the assumption would be that you got someone with an affection for the product. If the product is completely defunct, then you can do whatever the hell you want to it. I'd make a comparison to 'Only God Forgives'. In that the protagonist gets into a fight with someone who is clearly an aging master and get beaten to a bloody pulp. A Jedi master losing in combat doesn't make sense. And it's a cheap obfuscation to pretend you aren't rigging the deck. If they started with the Jedi pulling over a family car and executing everyone (to play up the cop aspect), it expose the stupidity of the writing. If you hide a jedi murder spree with non linear storytelling, it doesn't alter that it's happening just because you wrote it. So they'll have to paint Carrie Anne as having done something psychotic to distract from watching a justified murder spree.
Star wars had already already established that Luke at the peak of his powers was unstoppable. Yoda was painted as an absolute fighter. In the fight scenes you have a Jedi Master with presumably 50 years of skill being developed walking into blows from someone in their early 20s.

Nah, I think this series is more a fan-fiction of Leslie's own personal life. You have her sister falling out with her (when they were younger) to do with when she first came out; this is why Leslie Headland ended up identifying with the "villains" characters like Ursula and Maleficent growing up and Leslie sympathised with them. In Leslie's mind the "patriarchy" (and straight people) are the "VILLAINS", and in her world-view/fantasy is a Lesbian Witch Coven, that finds their own way to "Create Life" that sure as heck doesn't need NO MAN lol.
Leslie Headland had a child (adopted) just last year with her Wifey Rebecca Fergusson who stars in this show, in TWO roles, one of which is Vernastra, a character with a "Light-whip" (from the EU - they whip now!). And she also plays another secret role, have a guess who that is.
The sisters/twins Osha & Mae where one is "light" the other is, well - "messed up" and one betrays the other, that is heavily inspired by Leslie Headland's own life, regards her and her sister falling out. All these modern woke writers put themselves into their work, they only care about SEEING THEMSELVES in the stories they make, quite literally.

I just discovered your channel thanks to The Acolyte, at least one positive point for this show^^
After watching some of your videos, I must admit that your analyzes are both coherent and constructive, and that feels great.
I would like to hear your thoughts on the Andor show, which should perhaps give you some hope regarding Star Wars and what is still possible to hope for. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it, rather than wasting more time with The Acolyte.
A big thank you for your analytical work coming from an old fan who had the chance to discover the Star Wars legend in the cinema at its creation and grow up with it.
    Greetings from France

I think you can do moral equivalence in Star Wars. The fact that anyone can switch back and forth between light and dark, often without any real consequences, for a start. Knights of the Old Republic 2 is one of the most beloved Star Wars stories and absolutely explores this concept of right and wrong.
But you have to do it with care and good writing, and these days the only thing the writers care about is pushing a political and cultural message. All these shows are written only for themselves, not for the fans.

The sad thing about the Acolyte is that it had everything it took to be a great show: a murder mystery, a character with a dark past, a man who is keeping secrets and a mysterious villain, but the way it was executed was mediocre. Like many people say, they solved the mystery too soon. It would have been better if they revealed that the murder was Mei and that Osha was a twin way later on. Plus, Osha is kind of bland as a character nor does she take the lead as an MC. The one interesting character is Sol because he actually has a personality and depth and the action scenes are pretty good. I can overlook the clear instances of DEI (like the overweight for example Jedi master because in his defense, maybe he has "trucker's muscle" where you look fat, but it's actually muscle), but I cannot overlook that this story is just ok not amazing.
