As good as I'm So Afraid is on the album it grew into an absolute beast live - far longer and more powerful.

I don't often say this because I'm big on album versions but you should do a live version of I'm so afraid. Buckingham is like a man possessed.

Agreed. The best version is from Chicago 1980. You couldn’t have put it better: I always describe it as like paying witness to an exorcism. Lindsey sounds less like he’s performing, and more as if the music is being violently torn from his voice and guitar.

"World Turning" is one of Fleetwood Mac's greatest songs. The vocals on this version have real teeth, Mic is killing it on drums. You can't get better fire vocals than Christine and Lindsay together, love when they are together and a duet on her songs. Think About Me off Tusk is one of my favorite Fleetwood Mac songs. Hold Me off Mirage is a more popular great example. So Afraid is a great Lindsay Fleetwood Mac classic. When your 12 and going through it the fatality helps in an empathic way. Unforgetable.

Lindsey isn't usually on the list of top rock guitarists because he isn't known for his dynamic, fast, leads. But Lindsey has so much creativity and ingenuity in his guitar playing in all of these songs. He is a genius in what he does as much as any other guitarist out there.

The live performances of World Turning are wild - Mick goes nuts with his percussion drum. I forget what it's called but it's unique. Lindsey doing I'm So Afraid live is an experience you'll never forget. He rips that guitar to shreds.

Lindsey is a magnificent guitarist - really quite underrated. I love when he cuts loose, but it's his precision and artistry that is masterful. I'm So Afraid is an amazing banger live. And World Turning another great blues track -- the first duet of many between Buckingham and McVie.

First, thank you for doing this entire album and so thoughtfully. Great job! I like what you said about the way it was mixed. Flawless sound over the entire album and from so long ago. As the person to whom Sugar Baby was being sung, I’m afraid I would remain unconvinced, or certainly unenthused! 😂

Great reaction! Amazing album. I'll repeat what many have said, you absolutely have to check out the live version of I'm So Afraid - specifically from The Dance in '97. Lindsay (and the whole band) completely rip that song. Probably in my top 10 guitar solos!

  • @sfbayareagirl

Lovely analyses, as always, but if you can, you have got to check out some live performances by these guys. Two of the absolute best are from their 1982 Mirage Tour, "The Chain" (if you want screeching guitars and voices, omg!!), and "I"m So Afraid." Incredible. Both of those performances blow the album versions away.

Really big compliment for the review of this album.
As an old hand, I always get new aspects and ways of listening from time to time - maybe I should keep quiet now.
For a change, you could opt for 1-2 live tracks. A 3'-4' song turns into a longer, worthwhile musical journey full of passion and dynamics: Rhiannon, I'm Afraid or World Turning (percussion solo; versions from 8'-13'), not forgetting the acoustic Landslide. Whatever you decide, I'm happy to let myself go!!!

So Afraid, that final, dark song, has what I think of as an Native American tribal feel to the drums.
And that makes me think I should suggest some Native American artists to you.
    • Come & Get Your Love. By Redbone.
    • The Witch Queen of New Orleans. BY Redbone
    • Somewhere Down The Crazy River. By Robbie Robertson (formerly of The Band. Canadian/Indigenous)
    • Showdown at Big Sky. By Robbie Robertson
    • Sweet Fire of Love. By Robbie Robertson (and some of U2)
    • Rumble. By Link Wray (If you saw Pulp Fiction you heard some of it. Intrumental.)
These are all good! That whole album by Robbie Robertson is fun.

I highly recommend the live version of I’m So Afraid from The Dance. Truly mesmerising guitar playing. Also, the live vocal carries so much more impact and emotion. The studio version’s vocals are way too soft for me. Sure you’d love the live version!!

I may have the terminology sideways or something, but I think the lead vocal effect on 'World Turning' is along the lines of a reverse echo or similar: the effect precedes the actual vocal slightly. Like anything, effective used wisely judiciously. Great track all round imo.

You really have to do a live version of any song Lindsey Buckingham ripping his guitar. Those "guitars" is only one guitar played by one man in one setting. Anytime he's left the band, they had to hire two guitarists to do what he does on his one. 😁
