I found the trick to doing this quickly on a high-miles (corroded) 4Runner undercarriage is to use a body saw (a small pneumatic recip saw), and just saw through the shock shaft, right through the lower bushing at the top end of the shaft. Takes about one minute and totally removes the need to hassle with trying to loosen a stuck nut. Made doing the driver-side rear shock MUCH easier.
Would’ve been good to clean the upper mount area. I used an after market upper shock mount relocation kit that mounts to the outside of the frame. Better angle for shock response.
Yes, please show the driver side. There is a bracket that is in the way of the top shock nut. I can't get a socket or a flex-head ratcheting wrench onto the nut. I saw a video where they take off the tire, unbolt the bottom of the shock, then forcefully push the shock back and forth until the top of the shock shaft breaks. However I think the sawzall idea is a winner, I'm going to try that. But if you can't get a wrench on the nut to take it off - how do you tighten the new one.
Why in the video did you remove the lower bolt twice with no explanation? You remove the lower nut and then show removing the top and then show removing the lower again…..

Let me.suggest try the top first. That way if you can't get it off you don't have to rebolt the bottom

What is a good heavy duty rear shock for a 1998 4Runner 4WD SR5 that is not lifter but sees a lot of dirt and really rough rutted roads?
Any way you guys could show the driver side rear?
+Kari We do not have a video for this repair right now, but we'll keep this request in mind for a future video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-TRQ
Yea… just leave all the dirt and debris in the top shock mount. 🤦🏻♂️

I wish mine were this easy. I’ll be ordering an induction heater because my torch doesn’t reach the nut
do we even need to jack the car up? my shock broke and is just hanging there
also, if I replace my rear is it necessary to do the front?
thank you
