- Southern Lens - Wānaka's Firefighters
We all know that our local volunteer firefighters are genuine heroes but what makes them do what they do - and how tough is it to know the victims of fires and accidents as your neighbours, friends and even family?
We spent time with Wanaka's volunteer firefighters to discover the reality of responding to that siren whenever they are needed - not just for disasters but even for the birth of new babies.

I want to be an volunteer or an full time firefighter or Auckland Operational Support Volunteer when I grow up.
Do you get issued fire shirts to wear under your fire jackets?
I have worked with NZ fire fighters before and they had black shirts and t-shirts issued
When you turn out, it is mostly what you are wearing when the siren/pager goes off.
So you wear that to the station and under your Level 2's.
No,
As a volunteer, you normally wear the clothes you have on when the siren goes off, under your Level 2's.
Yes you can get Fire & Emergency shirts, but not many people wear them in their normal day at work.
