Where Are Cedar Fair's Defunct Roller Coasters? | Cedar Far's Amusement Parks Former Coasters

  • Cedar Fair has recently been removing a lot of roller coasters in their amusement parks over the last few years. Getting rid of thrill rides that were always a beloved classic for the parks. We have seen coasters that have been around in the park for decades disappear like they were nothing. Kings Dominion has been very unfortunate with this by removing Hurler, Shockwave, and Volcano the blast coaster which was regarded as one of the most unique launch coasters in the world. The defunct coasters don't just start there, Vortex at Kings Island was the latest ride to be removed from a Cedar Fair park. An Arrow coaster that was a replacement after The Bat, has left the park as soon as the year was over. It is always depressing to see our childhood favorites leave, but what happens they were still out there today. Cedar Fair and most amusement park chains will try and sell their older attractions to another park. Relocating the ride somewhere else so the coaster can still live on someplace else. Almost every Cedar Fair park has done this to sell off an old ride. Cedar Point, Kings Dominion, Knotts Berry Farm, these are all parks that have golden ticket winning coasters and they all have defunct former coasters that may still exist in the world. Nothing lasts forever, but hopefully, these world-class roller coasters will live on as long as possible.

    Just to clear up the confusion with Laser at Dorney Park, after it left Dorney it traveled europe as a temporary coaster at fairs and events until it reach Wiener Prater. I forgot to mention that because RCDB didn't include every Temporary relocation. Also Geauga lake was Cedar Fairs in 2004 not 2006. Just wanted to clear that misunderstanding! :)

    • @CoastingwithCulture
      @CoastingwithCulture 4 года назад

      I was gonna say, I worked at Cedar Point in 2004 & 2005, and we could visit Geauga Lake for free since Cedar Fair owned it, which I did a couple times in 2005 as I didn't have my own car the first summer I worked there.

      @@CoastingwithCulture How was it?

    • @CoastingwithCulture
      @CoastingwithCulture 3 года назад

      @@ilikecheese.316 It had potential to be a really nice park! The problem was that where Cedar Fair has seen thought the cleaning up of the old Paramount Parks after making the transition, Geauga Lake didn't seem to get to that point. Granted I went in Year Two of Cedar Fair's ownership, and thus I don't know what it was like in 2006 or 2007. The best example of this I can remember is that you could see that they just scraped off the Batman Logo from the Dominator headrests, seeming to have no intent to replace them to make it look better.
      That being said, I really enjoyed Big Dipper. It was probably one of my favorite wooden coasters at the time when I rode it, and loosing it was probably the worst part of the park's closure.

      Actually it was first known as stealth when it opened as the prototype flying Dutchman coaster 20 years ago at CGA. Paramount as part of a contract with vekoma had originally planned to add two additional units in their parks,one at KD,the other at KI but when the prototype proved to be less than reliable at CGA they scrapped the contract resulting in six flags picking up the two units for the 2001 season. Originally CGA was supposed to get hypersonic but lost it to KD that year so they got a mouse coaster instead.

    It's funny, I was just at Cavallino Matto earlier this week.
    Freestyle right now is fitting well into its new home, and it's a surprisingly good coaster, but unfortunately it wasn't the big hit the park had hoped it would be. Cavallino Matto had the misfortune of debuting the ride on the same year that Gardaland debut Oblivion - The Black Hole, and of course Gardaland stole the limelight with a far more aggressive marketing campaign, so Freestyle ended up unnoticed by the vast majority of the Italian GP, only exception being those living in its immediate vicinity.

    Thanks for making this video! Some of these have always intrigued me! I just had to stop and think about how crazy it was when you brought up that Kings Dominion's two newer launch coasters just completely bit the dust while thier original one, now over forty years old, is still operating! I never got a chance to ride jumbo jet at Cedar Point, as I was too young. But I do remember seeing it at the front of the park in its final year. The one thing I remember most, was the train getting stuck on the spiral lift, and a ride attendant actually pushing and assisting the train up the lift hill. I know this sounds crazy, but I saw it. I was 7, and I remember! Maybe the trains had just enough juice and just needed a little help. I dunno. But it was such a strange sight, I never forgot it.

    I rode the Wildcat at Cedar Point and at Jolly Rodger! If you look in the background of the video when it was at Jolly Rodger you can see the Dunes Manor Hotel (the tan hotel with the 4 peaks). We used to stay at that hotel :-) Also, I grew up in Allentown, PA and my first EVER roller coaster was the Laser at Dorney Park. In 2008 I was the Wiener Prater on my backpacking trip through Europe...but i think that was the last year at Dorney. Anyway, great video!

Only thing I have to mention is the Laser at Dorney Park was NOT in storage it was sold to German traveling Fair in 2008 and renamed TestStrecke and still can be ridden to this day. If you stop the video at 2:05 you can see the TestStrecke name on top of the loop. Overall good video keep up the good work.

    Great video! Geauga Lake was a Cedar Fair park for four seasons though, not one. They acquired it in 2004 and closed it at the end of 2007. But I do agree that they don’t belong on this list because quite a few went on to other CF parks (while some were sold off). Keep up the good work!!

    I have Hopi Hari as my home park here in Brazil, and rode Katapul, former King Kobra, lots of times. Hopi Hari is themed as a fictional country and Katapul actually means "catapult" in its fictional language. The DC theming was added nearly 10 years after it opened at Hopi Hari, but the name didn't change. It seems that the DC theming will be removed until next year.

    Last week I had the chance to ride "Freestyle" (Togo Stand-Up) and I have to say that it is fun. The helix and the other fast curve aren't that confortable, same as the restraintsystem, while the rest of the ride is crazy and intense, especially in the back (the first drop is amazing) and with the new paintjob and stationbuilding it looks decent too. Worth the trip to Cavallino Matto if you find yourself near by. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪

    I had no idea Knotts' boomerang got relocated. I thought it got scrapped, but I also heard that it got sent to China at one point, but I guess thats not true. Im just so sad because I never got to experience it, especially because by the time I finally overcame my fear of coasters I had one chance in December of 2017, but was still a little nervous of it, and once I heard about its removal for Hangtime I regretted my decision so much. It honestly had (a) nice color scheme(s) in its time of running and it was one of the last original attractions in the boardwalk section of the park

    I feel sorry that Michigan's Adventure (which is the bastard stepchild of the Cedar Fair family) got an SLC :(
    I also feel bad that Thunder Road got taken out for a water park expansion.
    But Canada's Wonderland losing a TOGO standup in exchange for a Dive Coaster; fuck yeah I support that! Now if only CW would lose Flight Deck, Time Warp, Dragon Fire .....
    As for Volcano at King's Dominion; well it had two things going against it
    1. Maintenance issues (LSM was still relatively new in '98 and I've read that workers actually had to rappel down the volcano opening to do work on the track. That and it being a prototype and the only one of it's kind built meant getting parts was a pain).
    2. An ambitious project from Intamin.

I hadn't ridden one before (I didn't get out of So Cal much and for a period of time I didn't go to Magic Mountain so I missed the inverted Deja Vu). I was pretty unimpressed.
