    Living a long way from any real gradient, hills or rocks, this is pretty much how I do all of my riding on byways, bridleways, towpaths, fire roads and quiet lanes. I might do a couple of 50 milers a year but most of my riding like this is in the 20-40 mile range. A Gravel, XC or Downcountry bike is perfect for this kind of riding. 👍 Thanks for recognising that we don't all do gravity rides Anna. 👍

    Love the video! More in my vibe than the usual gravity-oriented stuff on the channel. I definitely feel inspired. However, for me, a challenge would be to pass the barrier of 70 km on the tarmac with my gravel bike. A 100 miles (so about 160 km) off-road feels rather abstractive at the moment.

      @@bri.b.b.9519 luddite? You know this is GMBN not EMBN right? Also, you're assuming I don't also have an ebike (which I do, and love) but still very often enjoy the challenge of epic mtb rides 'under my own steam'. Maybe try reading people's comments without the lens of your own prejudice. I wasn't making a comment about 'green credentials', it was about personal achievement. By your argument, why are we pedalling at all when we could all be riding motocross bikes?

    She gives great advice and is very comprehensive. Although I'm not familiar with carb powder but I think a few snacks and a sugar free electrolyte mix in your water will keep you going similarly. Gatorade mix works well but I find it's too much sugar for the amount of fluid I usually drink on a ride.

    • @AnnaOnTheBike
      @AnnaOnTheBike 2 месяца назад +1

      Gatorade is one of the few drinks you can buy in a garage or cornr shop that actually has electrolytes in it! Carb powder is just food in powder form. It works for me, but not everyone will get on with it.

    • @KevinT3141
      @KevinT3141 2 месяца назад

      I use Mio Sport in one of my bottles, super easy to do 4 squirts then just fill with water. I'd hate to deal with powders. Mio probably does nothing on the carbs front, but it's got electrolytes, and it's yummy.

    A great video - 100 miles is about 160km for all the Aussies out there :) )
    I live about ~40 minutes drive from my closest MTB park (Lysterfield, where the 2006 Commonwealth games MTB was held). Recently I decided rather than packing my car up with my MTB gear, why don't I just ride there? - so for the past few visits I have been riding the ~65km round trip for the ~16km MTB park loop on my gravel bike. All in all, it's about 75-85km (depending on the route and which tracks I ride at the MTB park), and only about 600m of elevation (Melbourne and surrounds aren't very hilly) - but it is so much more satisfying. This way you get to enjoy the journey AND the destination (and a sneaky KFC zinger burger on the way home).
    I love taking longer rides, enjoying the bicycle infrastructure around my state with bike paths, rail trails and the places they can take you.

      A budget route is a Fitbit with your account synced to Strava (for better analysis and socials), but they don't seem built to last. It's good to track your route with something other than your phone though, so you have lots of battery for emergencies and post-ride normal life. After my last Fitbit died, I bit the bullet and spent more on a Samsung Galaxy watch (Android guy, but Apples to Apples for the rest of you, lol). It's nice to run Strava right on it, I just hope it lasts more than the year and a half I seemed to get out of my Fitbits.

    If you ride mostly in zone 1 and 2, carbs in your water bottles are more than enough as your body uses up fat stores comfortably. I never got hungry one bit in my long rides as long as I rode in zone 1 and 2. In zone 3 and 4 it's the opposite.

    • @AnnaOnTheBike
      @AnnaOnTheBike 2 месяца назад

      My Ergon saddle is designed for pedalling in and “xc possition”, which means it’s a bit more curbed and designed for riding on the nose more than the back. Ergon’s e-bike saddle has a bigger and flatter surface at the back to accommodate a more upright riding style, which suited my long-distance position better. It’s a minor tweak but it works for me
