  • The mysterious country of Bhutan, where earth meets sky
Bhutan is a mysterious country surrounded by the Himalayas.
The majority of its territory is covered with mountains reaching 2,000 meters in height. There are more monks than police troops in this Buddhist kingdom, which is the world's only country without traffic lights. Nor does it have fast food restaurants or foreign commercial advertisements. Everything believed to disrupt people's happiness is outlawed in Bhutan. And anyone can receive health care and education for free. More than 60 percent of the national territory is allocated to forests. Despite its poverty, Bhutan is a spiritually rich country that chooses slowness over growth.
    Poor but happy
In 1972, the Bhutanese king said he would focus not on promoting the country's gross domestic product, but its gross national happiness. While other countries pursue economic growth, Bhutan pursues happiness. Yangzom, who we met at the Wangchuk National Referral Hospital, brought her child to undergo health examinations. This woman can't afford healthcare costs because she makes a living selling goods at a market, but she doesn't look worried. Anyone in Bhutan can receive medical treatment free of charge. She says she is happy to live in this country.
Bhutan provides free healthcare and education to its residents. Tshering Dorji attends the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, where he receives top-quality education because of his outstanding talent. Thanks to government subsidies, this young man from a small village can receive high-quality education free of charge. The government has also agreed to sponsor his studies abroad upon graduating. The Bhutanese government supports its talented people and presents all its residents with equal opportunities. One of the world's poorest countries, Bhutan has achieved what many industrialized countries have yet to.
    Happiness increased by sharing
Passang Dem's family, from a small village of Mendi, prepares for an important occasion. Bhutanese households hold the religious ritual Puja three or four times a year when an important event takes place. One day before the ritual, Buddhist monks visit a family to make butter flowers to be offered to god. The ritual is accompanied by music while the monks pray for the family's happiness. After the ritual, all the neighbors have a meal together. Passang Dem's family is happy to receive many guests. Sharing is part of their everyday routine.
    Finding spiritual happiness
The Memorial Choeten Temple was built by the mother of Bhutan's third king. Wangchuk Dema spends his entire days spinning a hand-prayer wheel, which is believed to have an effect similar to reading scriptures. When spinning the heavy wheel, Wangchuk Dema thinks of everything good he has done during his life and prays that his life after death would be more beautiful. The Bhutanese say they are happy to follow god's will.
    Entrusting one's life to god
The Taktshang Goemba Temple is located 3,300 meters above sea level on a steep cliff. This sacred place is hard to reach, but it is a must-visit location for the Bhutanese. Lopen Dorji struggles to climb the steep cliff carrying a heavy bag. He is exhausted but joyful. His light steps show his secret to happiness.

If Bhutan takes a step in the modern world they will regret it. Modernity and happiness does not go hand in hand. The modern world comes with war, envy, racism, greed, intolerance. Please Bhutan stay whole, stay peaceful so I may one day visit the happiest place on earth, and lie in the meadows and look at the skies one day before I die. Happy...

max max Well , they have now TV, and internet. And gaming. Everybody has a mobile phone. So one way or another they are catching up with modern times, no escape there. Still, it will take sometime before such a beautiful and spiritual country is spoiled by the trappings of wealth and materialism, if ever.

And the calf and the lion* and the fattened animal will all be together;*+
And a little boy will lead them.
7 The cow and the bear will feed together,

Eliseu Hackbarth I don’t think they are liars. I think they live in a dictatorship, with a smiling face, and they know it.
Like in Tibet: If a stranger has the right to film and interview, you’d better show your smile and your pride...
This whole documentary is just propaganda!
I am just halfway and already bored by the fact that most of the people interviewed start by saying « I am lucky to live here », and then: ho, how great the government is, they help for this, they help for that, bla-bla-bla.
And the Prime Minister who says that when you sleep you do not see your belongings... so you don’t need too much!
Wow. I wish I could see his house... and he is in better shape with better teeth than most people in this documentary.
And... What ??? There are no lights in the streets to make sure drivers would not get angry waiting ?
Well, if just waiting for the light to change is an issue in Bhutan... this country actually has *real* deeper problems!
80% of the population is peasants.
20 % of elites, ready to make some efforts so they can keep all their privileges... That reminds of something, but not sure what.

The Semi Nomadic family were wonderful to see, particularly the oldest son who emanated kindness and the joy of life. The village celebration cemented the web of close and significant relationship through sharing in a feast and expressing togetherness in dance.

How I wish we, Africans, were as successful. I find the Bhutan's humanity, selflessness & positive attitude extremely beautiful & refreshing. Also, for someone like me, who has always have inner conflict with "modern" organized religion, Buddhism tenets have always had a certain attraction to me.

    • @Chimonger1
      @Chimonger1 4 года назад +1

Whether the Abrahamic religions want to admit it or not, those have much foundations in eastern philosophies like Buddhism, & ancient Sumerian. But most of the fundamentalist sorts, reject that, even though some stories in the Bible, for instance, are clearly plagiarized from those, as are dates of holidays.
Many people are finally being brave enough to ask hard questions of religions; most struggle with how today’s religions goad conflict & “cherry pick” what parts to follow or believe.
Imho, to be truly human, is to opt for being compassionate, humane, balanced.
But that is not what the modern world, in its rush to be mechanistic, always escalating, allows. Technocrats push for mechanizing all, removing the “humanity” from humans. That causes problems, because humans, despite science equating bodies with machines, are not so.
Buddhism & some other philosophies, helps level the playing field, encouraging people to be mindful, compassionate, balanced, etc.
      You have much company, worldwide!

In the 90's the Bhutanese brutally rounded up the Lhotshampa people who used to make up one fifth of the population, stole their property and forced them to flee the country. Hundreds of thousands are now living in refugee camps in other countries.
There's no compassion there at all.
      This documentary was a lie.

    • @Chimonger1
      @Chimonger1 4 года назад

@@deretsun The brutality one group exerts over whatever other group they deem as “the other”, has gone on, probably for all time. Fear of “the other” has brought horrific treatment of “the others”. That behavior has resulted in wars of all sizes, using all sorts of foggy excuses that never make sense, whether it’s using force to take someone else’s resources, or using certain groups as slaves, or committing holocausts.
The bully mentality covers fear. Always. And more violence cannot fix it. It never could. If this video, & certain other’s comments bringing it to light, can help expose the lies, corruptions...expose the bullies as what they are....maybe it can help open people’s eyes & hearts more, so they can “see the emperor is naked”, & “not as great as the emperor might have wanted all to believe”. Leaderships in the world that get big, but lack ethics, are bad leaderships. Every nation on the planet suffers from that illness.
Naming the crimes fails to bring down big bullies, these days. Bullies have become self-perpetrating juggernauts that routinely annihilate those they see as threats to the continuation of their plans.
That constitutes anyone old enough to have knowledge inconvenient to the Regimes. It includes indigenous people, everywhere, who value ethics & keep long histories. Anyone who says “no” to the Regime...those have been routinely obliterated over all time. That is at the roots of all wars in known history.
What we need are good ways to correct the path. That is the hardest part...and now, whatever that is, must be huge enough to implode the bad leaderships, & wake up and embolden the people deluded by their collective “Stockholm Syndrome” bad dreams.
