I have visited two Macallan tastings this year on the hunt for a bottling which is worth the price. One of these tastings even included a 25 year old. For me it's the Classic Cut if you can get it below 200$ or if it really has to be Macallan maybe the 15 years old OB. Overall for me Macallan is for Cognac drinkers who also like to have a whisky in the shelf. Alternatively it may be for people who buy whisky to look at and not to drink. For those who enjoy drinking whisky there are lots of whiskys for the Macallan price which deliver much more. For the price of a Macallan 25 years old you can buy a Bunnahabhain 40 years old!
Macallan 12 double wood was on sale for $79, so I picked up a bottle. It is delicious. Who cares what Snobs or Geeks say. Drink what you like. What I cannot justify is spending $199 for things like Yamazaki 12 or Hakushu 12. They are okay, but not $200 worth in my opinion.
If Macallan were half the price they would be amongst my favourites but as it is I’ll continue to buy a bottle once every two years just to have to hand
Ive only had two variations of the 12. Like a lot say, it's great on the nose but the taste leaves you wanting more. I can't justify their prices in stores to buy it. I've kept my eye on the classic cut and some of those "Edition No. #" series to see if i can find a deal someday
I just picked up a bottle of the 12 yr double cask on sale for $79.00, I like it it's pretty good, but If I had to spend $90.00 or more to get it again I would just go for the GlenDronach 12 or the Glenmorangie 14 Quinta Ruban which I think are very comparable if not even slightly better.
The 12 Sherry is the one to get if you only have one. Its 100% European oak Sherry which is the classic Macallan profile. Not many expressions are 100% European Sherry that are under $100
No, it is "whisky loch". A "loch" is a lake in Scotland. A whisky loch is when there is far more being produced than is being consumed so the market is flooded. This happened in the late 1970s and 1980s and consequently many distilleries were closed.

If you want to drink a great merlot you can drink a bottle of Petrus for 6000 euros (depends on the vintage) or some other excellent bottle always from French Pomerol for 200 euros or Italian Tuscany for 3/400 the choice is yours. I drank them all blind and I assure you that all that price difference is never justified by the price but of certain wines you pay for the history, the name and the awards won but when you talk to friends it's one thing to say you drank an extraordinary Chateau Clinet 2009 paid 200 euros and another a Masseto 2006 for 300 euros 15 years ago, today it costs more than 3000 euros. Do you want to smoke an extraordinary Cuban cigar? You can spend 170 euros for a box of 10 fantastic Montecristo n.2 or 2,300 euros for a box of ten Cohiba Behike 52 (with medio tiempo leaf 😂). In your opinion is it a question of quality or a status symbol? Same goes for Macallan or Delmore with their ABV for children probably well cold filtered and perhaps with the addition of colorant.
I’ve been to Petrus. I had lunch with Christian Moueix and his wife in 2016. I agree with the price and pedigree thing and that is what The Macallan has been trying to brand themselves as - The Grand Cru of Single Malt Scotch Whisky. But it’s all marketing schtick that isn’t justified.
I've never been all that impressed by Macallan. Paying top dollar for 40% ABV just doesn't cut it. WHY is all European whiskey 40% or 80 proof? The good flavors don't come in until 90-100 proof and beyond. A little water added to a high proof whiskey unlocks everything for you.
I have ll but given up on Macallan. There are better whiskies for a better price. Why do we keep going back to them? FOMO? The Macallan mkt will crash.

had the 12 sherry cask and 15 year double cask recently.... everyone perfected the 12 year.. by a lot

You are absolutely right, drink what you enjoy.

Yep, me too.

Same for me. I would pick a Edradour 12 Caledonia every day of the year over a Macallan 12.

Well said, Erik.
I would like to find that one. The best I have tried is 18 sherry cask worth it if you're wealthy.
Hi Erik, what do you mean by a "whisky lock"? I'm not sure exactly what the phrase implies. Thanks!
No, it is "whisky loch". A "loch" is a lake in Scotland. A whisky loch is when there is far more being produced than is being consumed so the market is flooded. This happened in the late 1970s and 1980s and consequently many distilleries were closed.
@ gotcha! Glad I asked!
Erik , any idea what a Macallan 2018 is worth in American dollars ❓🥃cheers.
According to Wine Searcher, in California it sells for $200 - $892
I have 20 bottles of 12 different Macallan products.
Any Classic Cuts? 🥃
@@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies I do have it. I think they are 2023 and 2024.
Macallan doesn't use E150a caramel colouring in the product
That is true. That is why I said, it has natural color. Thanks for watching.
Does that apply to their core range products as well?
As far as I know, yes. But anything below 46% abv will have some chil-filtering.
Hi , there so much better options here in the uk , its far too overrated & overpriced , luxury brand no thanks
People get too excited about other people's choices. This is an enjoyable whisky and if you can afford it then why not?
The debate is whether there are better whiskies or whiskies of similar quality that are more affordable.

2024 classic cut is $139 by me
If it came down to that price here I might buy one. 🥃

Their is plenty of Scotch that starts at 43%, mostly single malts, many won’t buy anything under 46%
