The removal of the Glass-Steagall Act in the late 1990s, which contributed to the dramatic failure of large banks during the financial crisis of 2007-2008, was a very unwise decision. Dodd-Frank and this Act both need to be reinstated immediately in order to avert another catastrophe. If nothing is done to fix the current issue, what happened with SVB is merely the beginning of what will occur.
SVB, in my opinion, was attempting to restructure their bond holdings. In fact, selling their low-yielding bonds would result in a loss of capital. On the other hand, they were attempting to make up for it by repurchasing bonds on the open market at the higher interest rate.
The SVB scenario warns that the effects of the Fed's rate hikes are still being felt, despite the economy's so far successful resilience. Investors need to be cautious about the upcoming inevitable in situations like these. I'll suggest hiring a financial advisor because you don't have to act on every forecast. For a time, I've been using this as my backup strategy.
