I build a hut out of dead standing trees found on my 40 acre property. I thin out the forest to increase the health of all the trees, and make use of the material to build a really cool small hut out of a refurbished satellite dish. I use a bit of re-used tarp to cover the top of the small shelter.
MODERN SELF RELIANCE MERCHANDISE! modernselfreli...
This forest was planted nearly 40 years ago, and no trees were removed, so it's far too overgrown to be healthy. The best thing to do is remove half the trees and allow sunlight to help the forest recover and allow new trees to seed themselves.
The forest was originally designed to be planted quickly, but then harvested, just nothing happened.
I cut a bunch of trees to build the log cabin by stacking them vertically and make a rounded miniature, tiny house. I will include many features in this inside of this primitive structure like a wood burning stove, sleep space, and a wood floor.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.

I am in the hospital 🏥 in the Twin Cities in Minnesota. I have a blood infection , and I miss you Don. And the Wooded Beardsman. I miss you guys
Hey i got something for you call the forest land of the fallen trees
How do I get out there an help you guys?
MAINTENANCE , went the way of the RAINFOREST conservation
Wow is all I have.
The amount of items that are self sufficient for off the grid amazed me.
This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.
Coming from a logging background. we were hired a lot of the times to do a "select" cut in which the forest service would come in and mark trees to be cut. Why? well because some blocks were dying because the area was way to thick and needed to be thinned. I understand exactly what you are doing. Now 30 years later i admire people doing what you are doing and doing it on your own. Great video!
It makes sense for all sorts of reasons, safety since they might fall on someone financially they are not worth a lot due to size but if you remove the neighbours then they can grow and be worth more. By cutting the light will get to the undergrowth and encourage plants and animals to grow.
Funny. The time I ever see an abundance of wildlife are in natural uncharted forests. The replanted forests planted to reclaim old farm land won't last as if it would being natural. They die faster. Farm land is toxic to other species due to pesticides and consentrated herbicides left in the soil. Seen this in all the reclaimed forests here. You can't rebuild what God already had made, basically. And only adding one species when there are many that coexist, it will be impossible to reclaim land without knowing what grows with what.
@@mackenzielamb6513 It is not because the land is toxic otherwise there would be no trees. The reason that you do not see wildlife is due to lazyness. These single species forests are grown to be harvested. After say 20 years they are supposed to be thinned every other tree removed. Due to the difficulty of removing every other tree they get hung up when cut down and have to be dragged out between other trees. There is little money in it.
This means that tree growth stops little light gets to the forest floor and the forest becomes stagnant. Ironically if it were done the remaining trees would grow and become worth a lot of money but this growth would take another 20 to 40 years and the owners of these forests don't want to wait for such a payoff. Instead they just do not bother.
@@glennedwards1449 the issue with this is money. We strive for it and sometimes leads us to a dead end. We gut these forests, take more than we wanted, like here in Wisconsin, try to replace what they took and on top make a profit out of it and failed. Only growth was for the tree growth to benefit profit nothing else. That's how it usually ends. I backpack and hike a lot. There is a place in northern Wisconsin where an F5 hit and left a 40 mile path through naturel Land over the Menomonie reservation and back through the National Forest boundary. In the middle of the path you can see the difference in growth between state restored land and natural. Night and day really. Walk through the uncharted forests and you'll see the abundance of species of trees and foliage. The trees fall on their own, provide food for future trees by decomposition. How it's always been and it's good. Also farm land is bad for the land. The entire bottom half of Wisconsin is court ordered to get the water tested in all water supply, public and commercial, for contaminants leading to cancer and other health issues from farm run off from the fertilizers used. Phosphorus and nitrate mainly. In the past 2 years I believe globally we've doubled out fertilizer use to over 4 million tons. Locally in our towns nature reserve is a corn field and it's run off drainage pipe leads right to the stream of the reserve. Pointless to call it a reserve I'd say. I've photoed certain species of plants dying from this run off and the black, oily film on the surface of the water run off at the bottom of the hill and trails into the stream. Also the corn this year stinks bad. Like they mixed a little cattle urine with it.
Also forest service does it for fire concerns.
I love how every tree that has no more use can be used to create something beautiful and something to live in so talented you and your family are God Bless
The book provides clear illustrations ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO diagrams that cover many of the essential topics. The projects at the end of the book are valuable for enhancing your skills and creating your own furniture. A digital platform linked to the book that could offer the plans for other woodworking projects with the cut sheets would have been a nice addition, but overall, the book is excellent.
I don't live no where near a forest but watching your videos gives me a smile thank you...
I'm happy that my videos make you smile!
Old country bluegrass tune: " In the pines, in the pines. Where the sun never shines. and you shiver when the cold wind blows".
The round muffin build was great...but the Bacon S'More build was AMAZING!!!😍😍😍
Sundays I look forward to watch Mustie 1, but Saturdays I want to watch Kevin build and make me smile with his dry wit and humor. Oh yeah, hi Rachel!
This is the BEST video I’ve ever seen 💕🙏🙏
Hi Rachel! I love it when you visit the site!!! So sweet how you bring him coffee and snacks!
I wanted to make small round rooms like that, about 7 of them joined by tunnels; each one would be a different room of the house.
That sounds interesting. Problem with tunnels, and even above ground structures, can be radon gas coming up from the soil/rocks. It turns out that even if it tests fine, it can become a problem down the line. You need to test every 2 years minimum, from what I read. In any case, building a cabin or house is something I wish I could do!
@@wownewstome6123 I heard that the Deep State had 20,000 underground cities (the USA govt has some too).
How can they stay down there, if a little tunnel can kill me?
Fear porn bro, not buying it, my IQ is too high, sorry.
@@allonfollett8416 Radon leaks into even "normal" homes and *causes about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year* - per CDC article, Radon and Your Health. It also reads: "Radon is an odorless, invisible, *radioactive gas* naturally released from rocks, soil, and water. Radon can get into homes and buildings through small cracks or holes and build up in the air. Over time, breathing in high levels of radon can cause lung cancer.
Impact of Radon:
When you breathe in radon gas, radioactive particles can get trapped in your lungs. Over time, these radioactive particles increase the risk of lung cancer. It may take years before health problems appear.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that radon causes 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year. Radon is the leading environmental cause of any cancer."
@@allonfollett8416 You seem to value "I heard" over documented facts. I'm sorry to hear that.
@@wownewstome6123 Besides this, I take C60, which blocks most radiation.
You know nothing Jon Snow.
As Q said, Trust the Plan. I'm fairly sure you are a Sheeple, that has never heard such things.
Thank you Kevin/Chris for putting this build in one video.
You know what you two really match as husband and wife how lovely she cares for her hubby what a good pair ❤❤❤
Don is the straight man... he always makes me smile.
You could expand the sleeping surface by hanging a hinged extension off of the face and installing some hinged 2x4 legs...would possibly make it large enough for two and it would conceal the storage area.
MSR is my newest Obsession!! Thanks for all the inspiration!!!!!
OMG! Now, we're watching you watch RUclips...on RUclips!🎆Mind BLOWN🎆
I helped my grandpa clear a property in the mountains for a home he built for my grandma. I learned all the stages of pine needle decomposition. Pine needles get THICK on the forest floor. Love your videos!
Hi Rachel! So nice to meet you! You are lovely. Your husband's show is one of my favorites!
I love this little cabin , but then a TV and toaster oven showed up so I'm glad you yourself admitted you brought all of civilization with you !!!!🤩
Anyone that needs a good secure shelter and they have decent woodworking skills and just happen to be homeless... This video is perfect for you! I think what you're doing is awesome and super interesting and it helps all of us learn how to be more self reliant! So, thank you and God Bless! We Americans just love our Canadian brothers up north, lol 😄
And no one thinks the homeless need to bathe or use a toilet
The tools?
@@papafrank8900 well technically you could make this with a stone axe, a good knife and some sort of larger game hunting weapon. It wouldn't be as pretty but if you used mud instead of decaying pine needles it would be better insulated, you can make nails from bones if you really wanted to and it doesn't have to be perfectly leveled like he did it. He doesn't show you those skills but he does show you the steps to put the materials together. Kind of like a kid with no hands putting a Lego set together, a few pieces might be misplaced but if they have the drive to do it they still have their feet and teeth to do it with.
@@leighanneboles6609 build an outhouse and get a wash basin.
It’s not exactly rocket science.
The difficult part comes in the form of Land Ownership..
If you dinae own the land, you canae really build a house.
Government just doesn't let your live anywhere and trespassing gets ya shot.
No t.v , hello Rachel you both do not ever take each other for granted , love unconditionally . Dreamers are what makes the universe a great place to be a part of Bless you thank you . Don’t Evan know how much of my time I spent watching you . I’m inspired and you give me Evan more gratitude to every human in the universe we do not appreciate each other enough . Thank u again for your you . Don’t stop
That cabin turned out so cool. Now I want to build one with my grandsons. Thanks.
Hi Rachel... great cabin... nothing better than a small cabin and a wood stove... just great..
If you had tons of that extra plastic, you could wrap it around the outside for extra insulation/weather proofing & put some on the ground underneath the floor. Also build log frame connected the cabin & wrap it in tarp to make a enclosed tarp storage room/porch.
YOU ARE A FUNNY MAN. THAT'S WHY WE LOVE YOU. GOD BLESS YOU, BROTHER KEVIN.
I can't wait to see the forest all nice and healthy!
I’m always amazed at what you can accomplish in any of your builds. Using so many recycled materials and getting the results you get…pretty impressive. I gotta check in on both yours and Zach’s houseboats to see what they’re becoming. Great channel, always fun here. 👏👍✌️
Hi, Rachel. You are 1 of few wives to visit their husbands videos while supporting his hobbies. Keep up the humble work 👍
very talented and creative guy.. good salesman.. i think he'll make a great career as a tv commentator.. very eloquent , smooth and funny guy.. Never a boring moment listening to you talk.
Seeing baby pines is my favorite part of living in the woods. ❤
My cousin made a frame similarly, and then just stuck sticks of willow, which grew where they were, in the ground around it - the willow roots on its own and made for a live hut.
This was one of the neatest things I've had the pleasure of watching. You're crazy if you think I'm not building one of these outback myself. Lol. And hello Rachel.
Agree -it was amazingly well done in every way
You are amazing the way you repurpose and innovate! You have the capacity for a community gathering with all of your dwellings! Very cool
Only thing he been recycling is these videos. Let’s get back to the OG builds
Hi, Rachel - thanks for bringing coffee to chatterbox. Nifty little easy cabin. As for sleeping warm, ALWAYS twice as much beneath you as over you. Old Boy Scout trick I learned about 1959. Camped in 4' of snow in a Marine pup tent, Shenandoah Mountains.
Hi Kevin just to say I love your shows. You and Don keep up the great work and good humour. I'm from England across the pond.
Hi Rachel!! Nice of you to bring a snack and nice to meet you!
That was an awesome build, thank you for sharing. Also it is not recommended to sleep all night long with your electric blanket on, you could easily over heat. Instead they suggest you turn it on awhile before you go to bed then turn it off before you go to sleep.
He ain't gonna overheat out there
In the Poconos during the 80s, stands of hardwoods were marked with orange paint. $4 you cut & haul per cord.
Kept our cabin warm!!
Yes, I/ we enjoyed you and watching this round build!
Howdy Rachel, it’s always good to see the great woman behind a good man . Cabin looks & should function awesome. I like it . I like it a lot
Thank you for introducing me to EcoFlow, your build is simple and perfect. I subscribed, best to your wife, child & dog but every man needs time in his comfort cave.🗽🇺🇸Brooklyn NY
You can do airbnb for folks who want to go and stay in the woods. Rustic. Good idea. I would come a few times a year. Something about being in a small cabin in the woods. Come one with nature. Hi Rachel 🌹
Yep, that stand should have been thinned before the trees got so tall. Though it looks like some thinning is going on from bark beetles. It could still be a nice stand. Most trees roots go out only as far as the branches. If you thin them too far apart too fast they won't have the root structure yet to keep them from getting blown over if you have strong winds there. Shading the forest floor doesn't hurt anything, it keeps the brush down and lessens the fire danger. Sweet cabin.
Super cool structure. I would have made two bed platforms. Also, Rachel might stay the night if you had built a Loo and added a dishwasher!!
It is nice to meet Rachel. I love watching you be creative, starting with natural stuff and making something useful out of it. I have 16.9 acres, mostly wooded, with lots of downed trees due to a tornado which came through 4/30/19 which need to be removed. House is 784 square foot aframe. Love the house, don't love lack of storage and walls at 60 degree slant (hanging pictures???)
High Rachel nice to finally meet you!!
This is the first time i have ever seen a fully round design and it is awesome. I love anything that makes use of scrap and outside the box thought. Reduce reuse repurpose recycle! You blow this out of the water with that waterproof but completely light permeable roofing tarp. It prob also gives you a tiny camouflage effect in the snow. Like a conservatory! I could easily see this recreated as a she-shed or winter greenhouse even in your yard.
I always dream of having that early seed starter space for the shorter growing season zones or that extra shelves to overwinter the lettuce and green onions garlic and radish. You could even rig up a grow light so easily. Now i am jealous to the bone. Anyway, this was fun. Have a nice day!
🧄🧄🧄🧄Garlic requires no protection from the weather. You plant each clove a thump deep and a handspan apart, around the first frost, and as long as the ground is not frozen yet. Then let it be, it knows what to do. For a northern climate you want the garlic with that hard stem in the middle. The other kinds are for milder climates.
🧄🧄🧄🧄Then the next warm season make sure to harvest all the garlic scapes, a vegetable in themselves, that is the stem and flower bulp. Sold in oriental grocery stores. Taste just like garlic. Removing the said garlic scapes promotes root bulp development, which is what you want.
HAPPY GARDENING TO ALL, EVERYONE AND EVERYWHERE
Love it! Reminds me of a yurt. Love the walls, too. Good job. I have 2 Eco Flows, but not the BIG one like you have. Last winter I used the smaller Ecoflow in my bedroom to run my electric mattress pad and it did just fine. Then I recharged them during the days with my solar panels.
thanks for the video great idea my grand kids would love this
A metal clad Yurt!
23:42 it's a giant soft box!
44:41 Hi Rachel! We don't listen to him either! 😆
This very cool. Kinda like if Richard Proenneke had a satellite dish! A TV. And pizza oven.
Not sure why I am watching this but we’ll down because it’s informative and entertaining.
Very industrious!! I love the muffin. Some seriously thick and tough walls, awesome idea for the roof, the daytime lighting is outstanding too. You could live very comfortably in your little round house, especially having the Ecoflow. You have a very pretty wife, too. Hi Rachel!! Bro, you really got life by the tail!! Good on you. Best wishes for you and your family and happy forestry!!! I want to see your progress in that reclaimed forest, but it's going to take some time. Interesting stuff.
As a Navajo... This reminds me of Traditional Navajo Hogan Style ... Many style material were made from it.... Modern one are more Efficient....
I thought I shared this with you... Love the Video ..🤎👍🏾
Hi Rachel… I like the wood on the inside. Clever build. Great use of recycled wood and pallets etc.
Wow!!! What a fantastic cabin!!! I would love that experience. 🏡🔥❤️🌅❄️❄️❄️🎶🎶🎶🐾🐾🐾
Never thought I missed being g 10 and building a fort in the woods, only way better, til now. Thanks for that!! Love the grill by the way.
You are such a creative, entertaining and delightful character. Thanks for the video!
Loved the round cabin & roof idea, the floor too. However, not everyone ( me ) can afford the EcoFlow battery generator. My power goes out at home a lot we have above ground power lines & live in the PNW surrounded by trees. I have investigated different methods of maintaining my fridge & other basic needs, several people on youtube show the EcoFlow as well as similar & it looks awesome but at a price point of approx $4K to run a fridge a fan & a light or two it just can't happen on my and many others budgets. I am a young senior citizen with a tiny income. I am envious & wish I could afford a cure to my situation. Thanks for posting such a cool video.
One of my favorites for some reason.
Nice place to hunker down when working in the forest and take a break
Woww I love your round cabin. It is simply divine! The coffee looks great. Yes you are extremely entertaining!! Love it. Bravo!!
Very awesome! Loved every minute. However, no tv... don’t ruin the beautiful vibe❤️
I really like this build, but you didn't mention once about an outhouse or washing facilities - so it is more just for camping than anything long term - thanks for sharing - not sure that we can get most of what you used here in South Africa, especially your power equipment - a great vid
Worlds most flammable home
THAT'S HOW IT WORKS ON A YURT ROOF. VERY NICE.
This is a lovely little cabin. Quick, simple useful.
Watching you take a n idea and make it work is so uplifting. Please keep making your ideas real. Hi Rachel, don't know what you think about Kevin's projects but at least it keeps him from under your feet ! Who is Don, why does he help you? Is he really the quiet genius behind everything? 🙂
Poor guy, he has to do always the hard work, hopefully he gets paid well???, well, knowing this "cheap guy"???????
I heard Kevin mention that Don's his dad. Father-in-law perhaps.
You're so smart! I would love a husband like you! Something to pray about. He has to be out there. lol Great job guys! You have a sweet wife!
Sorry late watching this one awesome build love it you got me and my wife ready to build.hello to your wife
Saturday coffee break ….oh boy!!!
Really like your forest management knowledge and use thereof! That log "yurt" is to die for!
“You feel like a bee?”
“…….Yeah!”
Love the vibes always!
i have been off grid 18 years that is cool seen the satellite dishes used for gardens. The only thing is the pine won't last in the ground hun should have used cement or burnt the ends that were going into the ground :) Beautiful shelter :)
Hi Rachel it’s good to let the lads live there dreams even if there a bit wild
I think your hut looks amazing!' It looks real sturdy. Great ideas. Cute.😊
Wow, looks great.
I like how Rachel made a side eye look at you like you were crazy but she loves you lol
That's so cute! We have loads of trees, we could do that. We had ours cut and replanted about 20,000 indigenous broadleaf trees every year or so to turn it back into a healthy forest. It's really hard work. If I had had that roof, what I would have done is added a straight section between the two halves to make it a wee bit bigger whilst still using your idea of the trench around it except it would be a rounded off rectangle. I don't know what the middle would be but I would come up with something.
Planting a forest is hard work.
Well my friend enjoyed the videos tremendously Nice of the wifey poo to show up Keep making The videos I get such a Tremendous enjoyment out of them once again thank you
I wish I would have seen your video sooner I sold a lot of my trees on my property I do have some left over they're not as big but I can still do something the way you have great job I love it
Nice shelter. Thanks for showing us and take care.
I was watching your video next to my husband who was still sleeping. He woke and ask what I was watching cause his dreams were altered. Lol very cool design.
This is what I need to be able to do..... it's beautiful..
Staple up with a piece or two of that plastic on the interior walls . It will block the wind and help insulate the interior.
I think that lil round house is just so beautiful. It reminds me of a mix between a log cabin and a yurt . I have a few questions to ask you . Is Don your daddy ? Are you one of those people that talk in your sleep ? Do you have any siblings ? You are so funny . You have a beautiful family . Don is so strong to be a older person his name should be Popeye . What Don be eating spinach ? You remind me of my daddy cause he always building things mostly when he was younger , he still builds things , paints among other things . He taught me how to build things and paint . I would love for you to build me a tiny home when I come up with the money . You are just so humbled and down to earth . May you , your family and friends be so blessed . Miss . Linda 😄😄😄😄❤🙏
My Dad isn't in this particular video. But he looks similar and his name is Don. I don't talk in my sleep as far as I know. I have three siblings. Thanks.
Looks so wonderful what a great idea thanks for the info
For the folks complaining, "You're killing trees! Oh my God! Boo hoo!" It's your property, do what you want.
He was harvesting 💯% DEAD TREES.
The kind that burns fast and furious in a forest fire.
Forests need to be managed and maintained.
Helllooo Lady Rachel.... Love to see you and your Mr. Idea Man
It is beneficial when You burn the ends of timber , the ends going into ground charring them increase durability , Ziggy Alberta, Forester , good idea , nice work , congratulations
Wow, you still have snow, must live north of Thunder Bay. Heehee. Great idea for the old satellite dish.
Hi Rachel. Glad to make your acquaintance.
I am getting the feeling of Dejavue on this video and the boat build. It's as if I have seen them before in a different format. Lol 😂
I sold and installed woodstoves in hilly WV in the mid-70s. That stove and many others like it were a copy (rip-off) of the Norweigan Jotul stoves ( that one was the Jotul 602) that were arguably the best quality and most efficient stoves made at that time. The efficiency was due largely to the baffle system they employed. The fire burned from the front to the back with the flame hitting the baffle and following it to the front of the stove then going over the baffle to the back where it went out the pipe. This allowed more heat transfer into the room and promoted a secondary burn at the turn of the baffle for more efficiency and almost no smoke. When it is burning just right you will hear a slight roaring sound from the secondary burn, watch out, it gets hot!
You might check and see how the baffle is in yours, often they would burn out after many years from the extreme heat and people would just remove them, it might be worth your time to make a steel replacement for it if that is the case with yours.
The problem with the Jotuls was their very high prices, it is easy to see where the market inspired many others to copy these great stoves. I have heated my houses for the last 45 years with the Jotul #4 combi-fire, It still works great, I love it. Great build on the cabin!
Jotul does make a really nice. I'll have a look for such a small space pretty much any stove is gonna sweat you out.
I came for the cool projects but subscribed for The Don!
Cool shelter my friend!! Great use of material s!
Look awesome, I’ve always wanted to use a large satellite to make a garden gazebo! Your log round house is really cool! Now to finish the video!
