Across Japan, there are a couple of remarkable Gohyaku Rakan (literally: five-hundred buddhist disciples) assemblies to be found, and I am thankful you were able to dedicate a portion of this travel log to your local one. The origin of this cultural phenomenon actually stems from priests wanting to comfort the people and/or attendees in their vicinity, who were faced with massive death tolls due to famine or even buried miners. I hope the sentiment, as well as the remembrance of those lost to these tragedies still rings true to this day. Also, set against the warm sunlight of fall afternoons, the statues omit an even more powerful aura. ☀
