Garden grown melons! What I learned about harvesting and when to do it!

  • I was so excited to melons for my first time! The season started out rough when the temps dipped below zero just after I planted my transplants out and they froze!
I quickly ran to the local greenhouse and got some new plants, 1 cantaloupe, 1 musk melon, 1 watermelon!
I originally thought the musk melon was a honeydew but then it started to look like a cantaloupe, it turns out it is actually a musk melon. Similar to the cantaloupe but green on the inside!!
Anyway I had no idea when to harvest them or when they were ready so I read a bunch of articles on line and decided I would try picking one!
    They are ready!!!!
The one tip I really took away was the ‘cracking skin’ around the vine where it attached to the melon each of them had that, and then if you pressed in the vine would it break off fairly easily, But not totally just fall off?
When I first read about a melon ‘slipping’ off the vine, I assumed that it would just fall off, this is not the case. It will still need some encouragement to come off the vine but it should come off quite easily!

I am so excited for watermelons too!! Started too late here, and the vines weren't happy and didn't start actually growing until the end of August 😂 not even flowering yet!! Gardening at usask has a nice list of cultivars from their earlier studies and north Dakota's university!! I plan om trying to find some cream of saskatchewan watermelon seeds, it's a white one amd looks fun!! Cultivated in Manitoba so should do decent as well!!

Amazing! Yes actually I’ve taken most of the prairie horticulture program from Usask so I am quite familiar what some of what goes on there, they definitely have a wealth of information for growers! I have never made it to one of the sales but would love to one day!

@@outgrowin Oh that's really awesome, good job!! It must have been fun playing in their garden!! It is definitely worth the drive!! Especially when they do online pre-order, make it feel like less of a gamble lol!!

The program is all online for the prairie Hort certification so I didn’t get to play in the garden but I bet that would be amazing to see! I’m for sure going to look into their plant sale for next season! Thanks for filling me in. It’s about a 2 hour drive so it’s good to know you can pre order! So exciting!
