One of my very favorite episodes-- the reading of Edith's will. The tension between Joan Bennett and Louis Edmonds is wonderful. Edmonds' disdain for Bennett is so well done and Selby and Karlen round out this great scene.
The reading of the will was SOOOOOO well written. Giving the money to Judith and watching her claim her new power over her brothers was pure fun. Reminds me of a scene later with Trask ...
David Selby obviously had lots of fun playing Quentin through this part of the 1897 storyline. He got to be a rogue rather than a villain. A rogue isn't evil, per-se, but at the same time isn't bound by the rules the good guys have to stick to and thus gets away with a lot of crap while facing far fewer consequences for it.
I watched this show when it aired with my late mother. we loved it I would run home from school everyday we got out the same time it started. a few months back I watched the show series again. remember when Joan Bennett was afraid of being buried alive and was. the part where she walked in Collinwood and said Im back everyone was surprised but to me not near enough. I thought ok she just came back from the dead... turn the page lol. after all she wasnt a vampire or a witch. I didnt remember kate jackson ( Daphne) in the first series ? she was simply beautiful in her 20s. Caroline did that accent so good of Pansy they let her do it again later. she was so cute like she was born with it. never be another Dark Shadows . my childhood would not have been the same
They cut off before my favorite part - when Quentin says that after Judith speaks to the staff maybe they can all come back and watch her write a check 😂
Joan Bennett was at her best when the writers gave her some meaty dialogue. One of my favorite scenes with Joan Bennett was during the Leviathan storyline when Elizabeth confronts Paul Stoddard in his hotel room.
@@richardgarcia618 Remember the scene when she gets Mrs Johnson to help her drug Paul but he doesn't take the bait and she says ,"What makes you think that after all these years I'd take you back !"
@@jonhinson5701 Looking forward to that as well. I know the 1897 storyline will be a long haul and haven't been looking forward to Leviathan. With good stuff like this, I will now look to that time.
I enjoyed it when Judith ( Joan Bennett ) puts on that smile as she read the will ... that's one way to start a party . 🎉🤑 One of the best scenes of D.S. Edward.and especially Carl have to be so pathetic .
I watch this on decade channel. And love it my Dad and I use to watch this all the time he's know longer here. He's got his Wings know. But watching this know brings back great memories. Thank you very much for bringing this back.
This was done quite well. 'Grandma may have given me the back of her hand financially, but, at least I have a permanent residence here at Collinwood', something to that great affect, lol.
The ending of the episode and Joanie's performance is VERY reminiscent of "The Little Foxes" (41) where Regina / Bette Davis let her grasping Brothers know who's Boss / who holds the Phallus around here. There will be no more bargaining in this house, boys, this isnt my first time to the Rodeo ! Love how Bennett can pour on the "Bxtch Goddess" !
Who was the scriptwriter for this episode? The dialogue is sparkling, witty. You can tell the actors are thoroughly enjoying it. And the direction and camerawork really shines.
1897 has always been my favorite storyline. Maybe because that was when I first started watching it, but it is like quintessential DS. 😊❤️ Magda, Judith, Rachel (later Lady Hampshire), Quentin, Trask, Count Petofi, and a bunch of others. And, of course, Barnabas.
This clip cuts off before Quentin rejects any idea of killing Judith as it would not benefit him at all, just before he outlines his future plans with one of the best ever Quentin lines of the series: "Now that I am firmly established in residence here, I shall devote myself to a life of pleasure with the available ladies of the house."
I find it odd when Edward gets upset with Barnabas asks if his wife dead. How in the world would anyone know they should not ask about her. What a odd ball.
Angelique wouldn't destroy Barnabas. She wants to have him around to torment him. In the past Barnabas tried to get Ben Stokes to destroy him and Angelique stopped it.
Angelique was banished back to the 1700s as punishment, by her dark master because of she and Nicholas blair's failures in the 1960s. Quentin and Evan Handley bought her 100 years into the future 1897 through a ritual. She has no memories of being cassandra collins or of the 1960s.
Angelique being a vampire was a temporary thing that Nicholas Blair did to her as punishment. Once Nicholas was gone, so were his spells, or so it seems. I think Angelique was sort of in limbo for a while, until Quentin and Evan brought her back, in 1897. When Dark Shadows was made, it was considered "disposable tv", no one ever expected it to be rewatched and scrutinized. It does contradict itself a few times.
@@new_yawker901 I think she does "remember" the future here in 1897, she mentions it somewhere. I have the collection, could probably find it, but it might take a month. Later, in the 1840 storyline, she definitely doesn't know the future.
I can't get over how much makeup the women are wearing on their eyes! The fake eye-lashes are so heavy looking! Gosh! Even the male actors are wearing eye makeup! The sixties must have been weird indeed! ~Janet in Canada

The costume designer of that era did an impeccable job with the outfits
"OH EDWARD, I'M GOING TO CRY!!!" God, Quentin cracks me me up
I love that line.

John Karlen as Carl is one of the best things about 1897!
I agree. I've always been a Karlen fan.
Judith and Magda so good ❤️ 🤲
I love this show. Watched it as a kid with my mom. Bought her the entire series.

Intriguing scenes!
Angelique was SOOOOOO evil. I'm not sure she would have been happy even if she got Barnabas. People like that never are.
This was supposed to be a soap opera. I'm glad it turned into a horror series.
As you know, when the vampire came to town, the ratings went through the roof.
It was actually a HUGE thing during that time for the eldest son to be essentially disinherited like that. 😮😂

@BethHarmon-uv7tl A love that she always had for him no matter what time they were in as well as her jealously.
Why is Angelique no longer a vampire 🧛🏻♀️?
Is it because that happened in present day?
Anyone understand? Help me out here?

Angelique asked Diabolos to "lift this curse of night" when she exposed Nicholas' failures and his being in love with a mortal..
