- We've been dreaming of a camper van for years, and finally we bought ourselves a 2009 SWB VW T5 to do a self-build conversion! We chose this lovely little retired builder's van because it looked to be in good condition and was only an hour away from our home - and perhaps most importantly she was slightly under budget. We don't have lots of money to throw at the project so we're doing most of the work ourselves, we'll try and document the journey as we go.
In this video I give you (in hindsight an laughably inadequate) introduction to our van (who we named 'Elsie') and begin the DIY work by removing the bulkhead.

I always tell people if you have thought about it for even second just do it, brought a long wheel base t5 love every inch of the van loved the build out. For £20 worth of fuel you can have a fantastic weekend away never looked back plus you meet some great van dwellers on your mini adventures good luck
