Update: the JELOS installation process is slightly updated now, you have to select a function called "create game directories" to populate the second SD card with the ROMs folders. It's all been explained and updated in the written guide: retrogamecorps.com/2023/10/27/powkiddy-rgb30-starter-guide/#Setup

Hi Russ, as always, thanks so much for taking the time to review (you did 3 videos about the RGB30) and writing starter guides for users to get into retro handhelds and this device. I'm considering getting this device, but my experience with JelOS on anbernic rg353p was not so great due to the fact that the battery drained so quickly in sleep mode. Is there this similar problem here for JelOS on RGB30?

    • @pupunoob

so should we start using Rocknix for the RGB30 right now? Or is the last update of JELOS just fine for now?

For hardware mods you can also add a rumble motor you can see the white circle already on the board, I got a 10x3mm coin vibrating motor that already has adhesive so you just have to solder 2 wires . It currently only functions with ArkOS but I believe it'll work with jelos when they mainline the rgb30 version.

Man, I came from a patched Nintendo Switch, and speaking of retro emulation, this machine is a complete beast: fully customizable with themes, music (better than any Atmosphere OS theme), with Arkos OS Systems as Dreamcast, Naomi, Atomiswave, PSX, N64, NDS, runs smoothly, near to excellent...Battery life per gaming is about 4,5 or 6 hours (depending on the game requirements). I'm specially impressed with the Dreamcast performance: it can runs games as Neo Geo Battle Colisseum, Hokuto no Ken, Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxy, near to perfection. On the Nintendo Switch (patched) most of this Systems/games can't run, or you need to do tricks as playing it with Lakka, Ubuntu, overclocking, etc.

I got mine a few days ago and I’m completely satisfied, it’s just what I wanted. The build quality is very good, buttons are nice and the screen is the best part, I’ve mainly played SNES, GBA, NDS, N64 arcade and oh boy It works and looks absolutely amazing, battery is surprisingly good too. I’m in love. Only thing I can say is PSP looks a little small on the screen, I’ve only played patapon and it runs great but I just wish it looked a little bigger, that’s the only real complaint I have, other than that it’s a 10/10, if you’re interested in this device I’d say go for it, it’s not too expensive and works great, also this is an amazing starter guide that just buffed my device hahaha

I found that for GB, GBC, GG, NES, SNES and Genesis, I really like to set the video filter to "Grid3x" and the shader to "sharp-bilenear-2x-prescale" and either 10:9 or 8:7 aspect depending on the system. This gives fantastic crisp pixels that are defined via the grid, which I love the look of, but also takes up essentially the full screen minus the bars from the aspect ratio difference. I use the "Grid3x" filter for GBA as well, but I don't use a shader since it integer scales perfectly. Hope that helps someone!

I tried using the Samsung endurance micro SD cards as they are much more reliable than regular SD cards. They are slower but the types of games you will play on the RGB30 wont come anywhere near the max read speed of it so it is a good choice if you want something more reliable. Will probably work good as the flash storage too.

Awesome guide Ross! Much appreciated! I’d love to see a video of you discussing accessories for these plethora of devices. Being that a number of these handhelds only charge using a certain wattage USB-C, I think some users find power bricks and cables to be a little overwhelming. Maybe toss in some of your favorite battery packs, carrying case options (kinda hard because of the varying ergonomics but maybe an all in one type deal). Headphones, earbuds, or my personal favorite IEMs, varying IO adapters, etc. Maybe you’ve already posted a video regarding accessories and I missed it. If so, my apologies.
Thanks again for all you do!!!

I've found that for PS1 you can squish things in a little bit to make it more square-ish and have it fill up the screen vertically. You will still cut off a little bit of the sides but for action games etc it should be fine. Obviously won't work for every single game.

The default OS it came with had bezels set up for every system which felt like such a waste of the gorgeous screen, but once I did a fresh OS install (I went with ArkOS) and set up the scaling options, it is awesome. One thing I did differently than your guide was I set up the platform specific scaling options in RetroArch instead of in the OS. Is there any disadvantage to doing it that way? Another thing that I found useful was using the 240p test suite to make sure that my scaling options were truly giving me the nice square pixels I wanted.

Thanks for your thorough and amazing reviews and guides! I'm now well into my handheld journey with my RGB30 and Miyoo mini + thanks to your videos!
I have one question which I've never seen covered in emulation guides. I grew up in the UK, and like most of our European neighbours, our childhood games were played on microcomputers - Amiga, Commodore 64, Amstrad and Sinclair machines most often. All running PAL / 50HZ signals.
I love my RGB30 and MM+, but PAL games stutter in their scrolling, where the NTSC versions run smoothly. Turrican and Star Ray are great examples. Is it simply that these displays don't handle 50HZ signals, and is there any distinction on all the various options where display refresh rates are concerned?
I've chatted on Reddit a little, and the consensus is "Play the NTSC versions".. but that's a shame, as they speed up the music and gameplay in a way that just doesn't feel right.
I do have an Analogue Pocket - and I feel as you do that the RGB30 largely does everything almost as well, save for all these PAL games which run perfectly on that.
I'd love to learn that I'm wrong and that these can run smoothly on these devices! Forgive me if this is a question for another place, but since I discovered the issue on my RGB30, I'd be grateful to know where to start asking!

Sometimes it feels like all the fix does is make the dpad as a whole less responsive, you get less wrong diagonals because you get less everything. Had anyone noticed that when playing a game the right SD card gets really hot? I rest this area on my pinky finger when playing and it will occasionally burn my finger.

Hello there, just to say thanks for the vid….. All new to this but have created a custom RGB30 exactly to my needs.
It’s a great device and recommend to newbies like myself. I use the system just for mostly pre 32bit stuff and its absolutely perfect. Happy gaming all. :-))

Man I’ve had mine for like 4 months and all of a sudden my audio stopped working… I’ve tried headphones and even connecting Bluetooth headphones but, even that doesn’t produce audio. Does anyone know what else I can try or is my console just a dud and the audio is fully dead?

Thanks for this amazing starter guide! Love my RGB30. I set up everything and have my roms library (on a second sd card) but now i would like to switch to a new/better sd-card for the TF OS slot. The question is: is the scraped media like the box arts and the screenshots on the TF OS-sd card or on the games-sd card?

Just picked one up and....it's DOA. Powers on and the green LED comes on but the screen has no video.
EDIT: Looks like this is pretty common with these devices. Build quality control isn't very good.

I really want to like this device, being a fan of retro Shmups, but it's too buggy. Half of the game folders disappeared after dragging them into the Roms folder (after the firmware udate ,which I regret having done), then it's stuck at boot on a Loading storage services....Tried Factory resets, creating game subfolders in roms manually, didn't touch the Bios, no luck. Bit gutted to be honest :(

Thank you for the video, it was super helpful! I have one question about scraping the artwork. You mention not to scrape for Arcade/Mame games. But my arcade/mame lists are just text. If you're not scraping box art on those categories, what are you scraping?

In my RGB30 I have 2 SD cards. One card holds Jelos and the other holds ArkOs and all my roms. Initially I set it up to work as just a single SD card with ArkOS but I wanted to try Jelos so flashed it to the other card and didn’t even realise that Jelos would pickup the roms folders from the Ark SD card.

I heard that Powkiddy's pre-loaded sd card is actually pretty good - things are well named and without a lot of duplicates. I ordered the rgb30 with a 128 gig card, I'm looking forward to checking it out!

I've been unable to use a xbox one controller with the RGB30 via bluetooth. It pairs just fine and it works fine on the launcher but inside retroarch only some buttons work while others don't i.e. d-pad down works but d-pad up does not. Remapping the buttons within retroarch does not work either - it does not recognize the button press.
The controller works fine when paired to other systems, so I know it is not defective.
Appreciate any insights folks might have.

The SanDisk 16 GB card you recommend does not work in my RGB30. It works great in other devices but flashing the OS on it and booting from it always results in an error about it not finding the UUID of the drive. I double checked that it is correct, and I even copied the contents of the SanDisk card 1:1 onto the card that came with the system and that one works.
So sadly I cannot recommend the SanDisk 16 GB card for the OS. I've tried two of them and both showed the same error
