  • A film made by John Laing to publicise and record the construction of the Oil Rig Jacket known as 'Graythorp 1'.
BFI Database: Sponsored film on the construction of Britain's first permanent steel oil production rig, and its float-out and sinking in BP's Forties oil field. The film begins with an animation showing the plan for the project. It describes the Teesside area's experience with steel, which made it a suitable area for the production of the steel jacket platform. It shows the preparation work for the construction area and the building of a bund wall to create a working basin that could be drained and flooded. The jacket is then constructed piece by piece on top of a flotation tank using cranes. The welding is shown and the various check processes including x-ray to ensure the integrity of the structure. When the jacket is complete there is a naming ceremony and party, before the basin is flooded and the structure is towed 250 miles to the Forties field in June 1974. The sinking of the structure into place is shown at the end of the film.
This is a brand new digital transfer of a vintage 16mm library print.
Sorry if this film is unplayable in certain countries or on some devices - the copyright background music has caused some issues.

My Dad was also an electrician at Graythrop, I remember going to to an open day as school boy. Teesside was a busy place in those days, lots of industry.

Didn't recognise those pipes without a thick layer of marine growth! A safety inspector would faint looking at that video today. 30 year life, aye right and then some!

Everything was so labour intensive back then. Technology really has changed so much but I suppose this was nearly 50 years ago 🤟

This complex structure was built at the same time that the UK was modernizing its yatds to build large tankers. The yards' build using flat plate and sections and semi automatic cutting and welding machines building ships at a fraction pf the cost of tubulars. I started promoting flat plate MPSS semisubmersibles in 1980, it took till 2004 and Na Kika to be adopted. Tubulars are still being used for jackets-because that is the way it is done! Craig Lang

They had computers back in 1945. In effect the Vjctorian engineers used computers all the time, human ones.
