  • Chaden Djalali is tenured professor and chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of South Carolina. Professor Djalali earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics from the University of Paris XI and a Ph.D. in nuclear physics from IPN-Orsay (Institut de Physique Nucléaire), where he served in tenured research positions before joining the Nuclear Physics group at the University of South Carolina in 1989. Prior to coming to South Carolina he also spent two years working in the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University in East Lansing (1985-87). In 2004 he became chair of the Physics Department, and in 2007 he was appointed to a Carolina Distinguished Professorship in recognition of his outstanding research and teaching. Professor Djalali maintains an active research program in intermediate energy nuclear physics and hadronic physics; has taught successfully at all university levels and contributed significantly to undergraduate and graduate curriculum development; and has acquired substantial administrative experience, not only as chair of the Department but also through extensive involvement with university-wide governance. He has received South Carolina's top university-wide awards for research, service, and teaching.
