A lot of supposed "Super Spicy" food in Japan are quite mid, compared to Indian, SE Asian or Southern US cuisine. So, most Japanese are not really adept to the real spicy ones. Most Japanese don't really try to push themselves on these.
But, for 14 High-schoolers being hospitalized at the same time at the same place for eating the same brand is too coincidental. I believe Social-media is to blame. There may be some Tik-Tok challenge or something similar that is the fad right now in Japan, that these silly kids forced themselves to eat these just earn some Social clout.

@@PZier pain in the mouth is different from pain while trying to digest. When you are trying to digest something that is super spicy like carolina reaper spice you cannot eat/drink anything to immediately reduce pain. Like when I was eating that chicken I needed ice water to help me finish it. But once it was in my stomach and digesting it, it was just a painful stomach ache for hours. The lesson I learned that day is that just because I can eat it, does not mean that I should. I have no problem eating regularly spiced Thai food so I will just stick with that since it's already delicious as it is. Doesn't need more.

This is similar to the Paqui One Chip Challenge. It was also is super spicy. That chip claimed the life of a 14 year old boy.
Even with the warnings written on the box stating its for adults and can have serious side effects. The product was sold as food and wasn’t restricted from minor buying them at stores. The marketing of the product was also aimed at younger people for the sole purpose of making a challenge video on TikTok or RUclips Shorts. The product was banned from being sold.
I learned from legit doctors I follow on RUclips. (ChubbyEMU, Dr.Karan, ViolinMD, Foot Doc Dana and others)
The burning sensation that Capsaicin gives is an immune response. Chili Pepper plants evolved this chemical to prevent it from being eaten by mammals. But with constant exposure to capsaicin we humans can actually enjoy the burn. The more we eat the hotter we like our food. However there is a limit. Too much Capsaicin will cause an extreme immune response of the tissues in the mouth and throat causing swelling of the lips mouth and even airways. It doesn’t matter how spicy you like your food. It can be dangerous. The age limit is also a lie. Adults could also have a bad reaction to extreme amounts of capsaicin, especially if they are not used to eating spicy foods.

Spices were historically used to make poor quality food taste better or to preserve it.
However, spices were not common in Japan because fresh food was more readily available, and the Japanese food culture was based on eating fresh without preservation.

@@ARKSAAXX-ys9gz We’re talking about spice as in spice tolerance. Not the spices we use to enhances the flavor of our food.

@@risingstar9903he meant that the Japanese have no culture of eating spicy foods because they love eating fresh foods. Which means, they never build any spice tolerance at all. It is almost like blaming some South East Asian for being lactose intolerant..😅

@@Kael_Ardent Wanting to add some spiciness has no impact on the food flavor whatsoever. The natural flavor of it is still there, it just additional spicy sensation add in. At least it won’t mask the flavor of the food unlike soy sauce, wasabi and all those other condiments Japanese use.
