Yes, you may replace the hit with regular bass notes, or just omit it all together, just remember to keep the correct rhythm.

As long as the song inspires you, it doesn’t matter. Of course at first your playing might not be as good as the video, you try to reach that by practicing in correct ways. A long the way you can pick up some easier songs at the same time. All the best :)
