  • The Tagunggak is a traditional musical instrument played by natives of Sabah. This struck bamboo idiophone has many names: the Murut people refer to it as tagunggak, the interior Dusuns togunggak and the Penampang Kadazandusuns call it togunggu. The tagunggak is made up of a series of hollowed out bamboo tubes in various sizes. They come in groups of six but can be performed up to 30 at a time. They produce different pitches of a hollow 'boom' based on the respective size. It is often performed in a group, sometimes in the absence of a gong ensemble. You can often find the tagunggak being played during a procession or to welcome dignitaries. In this video, the performers of Tagunggak group dress in traditional costume of Kadazan Papar, one of the sub-ethnics of Kadazandusun.
