  • SAZAU PAPAR
Sazau Papar is a traditional dance of the KadazanDusun ethnic group in Papar District on the west coast of Sabah. Originally this dance functioned in the Madsuwau ceremony which is the ceremony of worshiping the Dapu (tajau or urn that keeps the corpse). Dapu is believed to have a spirit that must be cared for, worshiped and fed so that the spirit does not disturb and anger the person who keeps it.
This dance is danced in pairs by men and women accompanied by the sound of gongs of various sizes and a drum. The movement of the female dancer's feet looks like a person threshing rice from the stalks, that is, the right heel meets the left heel like a V shape then interspersed with the right thumb meeting the left thumb and so on, which makes this dance quite unique. The male dancer dances with his arms wide open in front of the female dancer while twirling his waist.
The dance dress is the dress of the Kadazan Dusun Papar tribe consisting of a long-sleeved black shirt (called sia) and sia nopuak (a white shirt with lace and a high collar) and a cone-shaped hat called seraung. The male dancer's clothing is similar to the Sumazau Dance clothing, but is slightly different in terms of the arrangement of decorations on the clothes.
