Non-political is the keyword. When your position is already securely set in stone, there is not much need for internal partisianism, which tends to amount to manipulative vote-fishing.

How about Swedes and Danes who came when Norway was in union with them?
I don't think you can compare Norwegians to native Americans, your immigrants are assimilating and not driving Norwegians to extinction or reservations.

They are much more like the native Americans having been 'Norwegianized'. Christen Andreas Brygfjeld said, the "Sámi race" was inferior to the "Norwegian Race",
is this perhaps why they would not want to be 'Norwegians'?
@torivarnor If they are not and will never be anything but samis why the Norwegianization? Why should they become a minority in their own lands.
People want to become Norwegian for the same reason that many Norwegians wanted to become Americans in the times when Norway was a poor country.
The point is that you want to keep Norway predominantly for native Norwegians but there is not really any such thing. We are all descendants of immigrants at some stage. Some Norwegians are descendants of slaves taken by Vikings. Some are even descendants of Swedes.
Norway's flawed like any other country, but I'm happy to say that atleast our monarchs are beloved, and for good reason, not because they're famous or have power but because they're kind and uplifting.

As a norwegian I didnt know this speech got so much international attention. We have our flaws and problems like any other country but overall I am pretty happy with living here.
Norwegian here. I work for Viking DMC (as a Supervisor) which is a ground handling team for Viking Cruise ships. About 95% of our guests are elderly Americans. I've handled, at this point, perhaps 10 000 guests, and most of them feel absolutely welcomed and at home here. They're telling me great stories of the past, sharing their invaluable experiences over their many years, and they always commend our ways and lifestyle. Unity would be my keyword. You're all welcomed to visit us.
some say that having a kingdom and kings and queens dont have a space in modern times. but as a Norwegian halfway in his 20's i still say he is my king, the fact that he has always been openly talking and walking without bulletproof glass or the imense security some feel is needed, shows the love that is for him and how he also trust us as a people.

He's a good king, but his father Olav was *great.* He was closer to the people. He sometimes walked around the city, smiling and greeting people, no guards or security. He even used public transportation.

Many asks us: Why we still have royals. What do they do? Why we don't change from monarchy to Republic. He don't have any power.

Wel..I think it's almost impossible for others to understand how much we love and respect them. And how important they are to us. We would.choose the royals over politicians.. any day..and every time.
But put simply..this is why.
They are more then just amazing ambassadors. They are like a best friend. Who guides you when you need it the most. They represent our very soul. As a nation, but also as a Norwegian.
And in times of need. Its amazing to have royals to.comfort us. And helps keeping the nation together.
Politicians would NEVER be able to do that. Our king isn't the king for just some. He's everybody's king.

I was anti-monarchy until I spent time living in the US. Sometimes you got to be outside your own country to understand what makes it important. It made me realize how the monarchy is a sort of anchor point for the whole nation. This massive unifying force, which you totally lack with a president often hated by half the population that did not elect him. A monarch can be a force of unity because they do not have to be political.
But perhaps more importantly it is a link to our past and our heritage. It was something that made me sad about watching so many people around me in the US. All they knew and cared about seemed to be pop culture, shopping and stuff. No reflection on who they really are, where they come from, their history, traditions and values. No, just "I am going to get this big house, with a stereo this big and have this and that." Life cannot just be going to the shopping mall. That cannot define a society.
Having a royal family may cost, but having a president isn't free either.

His Majesty the King is definitely the most liked man in Norway, because he is very unifying in his words.

My parents have been hosting US soldiers for, what to call it, 'learn to know eachother weekend?' for the last 20 years. We've had all sorts. Very ambitious young girls, haggard veterans everything in between. Even my conservative old dad is curious to learn new stuff and ways of life and loved to welcome these youngsters into our house

I’m very praud of our king and the rest of our royal family
Some people will criticize Norway and say "but youre a monarchy", and they couldnt be more wrong. The king has power, but has chosen to let the democracy rule his kingdom, as opposed to make decisions himself. Only if democracy fails would he chose to take back the power from the elected parties in government.
This is a good speach. Thanks for reacting to it. I'm norwegian, and I love my country. I quite like our king too, but I would prefer a world without borders and without royalty, just so that is said. No military is also preferable ✌🥀🦋

That's not quite what Norway is about, although being responsable for your own life is important. But, it's more about us taking care if each other no matter your level of contribution. Our greatest responsability is toward each other. That's how we built our country and our system.

I’m Norwegian and love our royal family - not so much the princess because she is engaged to a shaman that don’t believe in traditional medicine and earn a lot of money on alternative medicine, but use regular medicine himself and gets angry when the media sometimes point that out..
I'm against Monarchy in principle, but man! He is better than any elected president would be.

I don't believe in multiculturalism so I would be a bit cautious with the praises. The king has to take that position and I'm not completely in disagreement with him. We've had a lot of immigration and we have to try and make the best of it. Luckily we've had many with a western mindset coming to our nation, so from that perspective I am cautiously optimistic. But we cannot continue on the path we are in, especially we have to be careful with immigration from the third world. Like that woman pointed out: not everyone thinks it's ok with immigration to Norway. Not everyone thinks it's ok with gay rights. Now who might it be that are not ok with gay rights? Conservative right wing? They might not be fully on board with the pride thing, but few of them care much what people do in their private lives. On the other hand we are letting in plenty of people to our country who are not ok with gay rights. Not even their right to exist.
Well...i would say...oil reserves and being so far north made Norway what it is today xD. It's a bit idealistic speech and has a good message but also ignores reality a lot, which is the "super power of royalty" due to them not actually living in the same society normal people live in.
Venezuela has the largest oil and natural gas reserves in the planet. Not only that, it's rich in gold, diamonds, water, fertile soil, etc. Etc. Etc.
So what's your point? Because based on what you said, Venezuela should be the most amazing country in the world, yet it's so fucked up.
So please, enlighten me with what you mean.

Austria doesn't have anything that makes them particularly stand out and yet they're quality of life is amongst the best in the planet. I can keep giving examples of both ends, my point is that the oil comment is so lazy. Maybe it's not the oil but the way they function as a society. Have you ever thought of that?

Of course the oil helps, the same way diamonds could help many African countries, but that doesn't really do anything by itself.
And sure, corruption and shit governments explain why such a rich country like Venezuela is so fucked up. But then doesn't that mean at the same time that countries that are doing well without those resources are doing it right?

Not everything are great in Norway (f.ex how the governments doning everything they can destroy nature, ecosystems and the biodiversity) but we could hardly blame our king for this.

I'm Norwegian, and that speech doesn't mean anything now. Equality is also about money, right? The poor are only getting poorer here (yes they exist in Norway), the farmers are being killed economically and farms are shutting down. We have to import more and more food, which makes us vulnerable in a crisis. Our electricity prices have reached insane levels (its kinda cold here in winter), our leaders don't care about Norway one bit, and the king has no power as you know. And he lives in a different world altogether anyway. Norway is not all that, unfortunately.
People get blinded by nice, sweet words of rainbows and unicorns.
Seeing lots of people live in blissfull ignorance is horrifying.
A very Norwegian behavior is to complain..we are the luckiest people in the world and some people can’t see how well off we are !
There are very few poor people in Norway but the defiition of poor in Norway is crazy. If a familly does not have 2 cars, own a house and cant go to Spain on vacation they are poor in Norway!
Of course Norway has been getting less equal. That is what people wanted for a long time, voting for fewer benefits for the poor in order to finance tax cuts for the wealthy. Votes have consequences. But it's like the difference between weather and climate; it goes up and down during short periods of time, but if you look at the long term trajectory, the pattern is obvious; we are getting much more equal. Besides, what we call poverty in Norway, is relative. It's about people not being able to afford going abroad in summer, or things like that. We're not worried about homelessness, where our food will come from or access to healthcare. We sometimes complain about delays of new drugs becoming free of charge, but extra insurance for that, is only ten dollars per month, which I think it would be a good idea for everyone to pay.
@@jeschinstad Actually my votes have no consequences. No matter what we vote, we end up with one of two parties having the prime minister, and both of those parties are more interested in being popular to the elite,than doing anything for Norway at all.
And I dont know how you can say that in the long term trajectory we have gotten more equal? You are not poor, that's for sure if you can say that, and you are not old. I grew up in the 70's, the difference from then until now is very noticable.

He forgot to talk about himself not paying taxes and never having to run for office or apply for a job. Yes in Norway we are equal but the king is a lot more equal than everyone else.
The King should not run for office, that would give us another politicians promising things they can't deliver. There's no reason for the king to pay taxes on money we give him. The king is obviously one step above the common folk, but that's literally his job. As far as I'm concerned he's fine, I never want to see a President in Norway.
I would very much like Norway to become a democracy. Re taxes, its not only the millions he gets from working people he does not pay tax on but also his private fortune. Any retiree or disabled citizen gets public money and pay tax.
Norway need to move to a system where the best qualified person becomes president.
Concerning the speach: Its not the king writing the speach he has media and marketing people taking care of it.
A pricesse that talks to angels and marries a «shamann» that can cure cancer and fix vaginas that has had to much sex is also part of the story.
Kare, we chose the monarchy. An overwhelming majority of Norwegians elected is grandfather as King. Haakon has himself reflected on whether it is right of him to continue as a monarch but he has understood that the monarchy as bigger than himself. It is a duty and an expectation from the people of Norway. No, the king isn't really "more equal" than the rest of us. Unlike me and you he cannot really choose the life he wants. He is never really on vacation. Being King is a lifelong duty. It is not a job you can just quit when you are bored with it.
Unlike the jobs you and me do we are not judged by a whole nation on how we perform it. That the King does NOT run for office is a good thing. Once you run for office it is a danger of being influenced by special interests. In the US the average person running for office spends 70% of their time talking to donors. It is all about money and what those with money want from you. No, I want a guy who puts Norway first and not Rimi Hagen or whomever paid the most.
