- "In the Flesh?" and "In the Flesh" are two songs by the English rock band Pink Floyd, released on their 1979 album, The Wall. "In the Flesh?" is the opening track, and introduces the story concept of the album. "In the Flesh" is the twenty-first song of the album, and is a reprise of the first with a choir, different verses and more extended instrumentation.
The title is a reference to the band's 1977 In the Flesh Tour, during which Roger Waters, in frustration, spat at a fan attempting to climb the fence separating the band from the crowd.
"In the Flesh?" introduces the story of Pink, a rock star. It begins with the opening of a rock concert. The lyrics inform us that despite his outward appearances, things are much different "behind these cold eyes" and that if the listener wants to know what's really going on with Pink, you'll "just have to claw your way through this disguise." The song also subtly indicates that Pink's father is killed in a war, with the sound effect of the dive-bomber. Finally, we hear a baby crying, indicating that Pink and his mother are left without a father and husband, respectively (this is expanded upon two songs later, in "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1").
Later in the album, the reprise marks the first of a series of songs in which Pink, in a drug-induced hallucination, believes himself to be a fascist dictator, crowing over his faithful audience; this particular song is his hallucination that his concerts can be likened to a political rally. He begins exhorting his fans to show their devotion to him by throwing undesirables such as "queers", Jews, and "coons", "up against the wall". He punctuates the end of the song with "If I had my way I'd have all of you shot!". The incited crowd then chant Pink's name as the song segues into "Run Like Hell".
The beginning of the film shows Pink sitting in a locked hotel room. A housekeeper knocks repeatedly, then uses her keys to let herself in. While this happens, Pink's mind is flashing back to a concert, in which a massive crowd of eager concertgoers manage to break down a chained door to the concert venue, and rush inside, trampling each other in the process. The film shows quick cuts of rioting fans and a violent police response, interspersed with scenes of soldiers being bombed in the fields of war. A German Ju 87 Stuka bombs a bunker, in which Pink's father is killed.
The song is performed by Pink (Bob Geldof) in his dictator garb, with the set decorated like a Nazi rally, an insignia of two crossed hammers replacing the swastika. Geldof recorded his own vocals over the original Pink Floyd music track, replacing Waters' vocals.
The film version also uses a mix in which the song's intro was longer, with the E minor power chord riff, and a short David Gilmour solo, repeating twice. This was edited out of the record due to time constraints, but the song has been performed full length in most live performances.
Later in the movie the reprise is used in a similar way as in the album, picking up shortly after Pink's transformation into the Dictator. The song is one of the most radically changed among movie versions, having been converted to an orchestral piece. The Dictator questions the loyalty of the fans, while setting his dogs against the "queers" and "coons" he singles out. As the song ends, the crowd's chant of "Pink Floyd!" is replaced with "Hammer", invoking the film motif of hammers. In addition, both Pink and the crowd display the "Hammer" salute, arms crossed in front of the chest at the wrists like a pair of crossed hammers. In addition, the "Crossed Hammer" logo can be seen everywhere. The song immediately segues into "Run Like Hell".

In the 80s Roger Waters recreated this scene at his concert. He yell out and and actual spot light would shine on some poor random in the crowd. It was intense and awe inspiring at the same time.
the vast majority of the audience knew that was gonna happen obviously but it is wild to imagine that some of the people they did that to weren't very familiar with the band they were seeing and having a mini heart attack when the spotlight shone on them lol

@@pixel_supp pink’s going through a weird low point in his life where all the tragedies, wrongs and bitterness has cascaded into this climax of going completely insane. This will have destructive consequences and will lead to his eventual condemnation. So Pink Floyd is not pro-fascist or anything like that, this is more of a cautionary tale. If you know the rest of the album (and the wall movie )before and after this point this becomes clear.
an an mcr fan who was directed here i can absolutely confirm
Is this supposed to symbolize the Nazis

Pink has been connected since he was a boy. He has watched humans and seen them for the self deluded fascists they are. He uses his ultimate pre-eminence to spit in the face of a willing public that has finally perceived their servility. What a guy.
When he says "if I had my way, I'd have all of ya shot!" He literally means everyone. He has become so disconnected from reality and isolated that he wants everyone there to die.
@Robert Bradshaw using fascism as a metaphor for a midlife crisis is Roger waters to a tee. It also warns of the dangers of extremists and fascism simultaneously.
@Robert Bradshaw our experiences shape who we are. For the good and the bad. Thanks for sharing a personal story of yours. It sounds like you have done a lot of growing since then.

I think it’s a childish joke on facism or even politics, idk why I find this one song so much more “humorous” than the rest of the album which is plain depressing
This is exactly the vibe I get, which is why it gives me chills every time. The first "In The Flesh?" almost has this enigmatic confidence to it, whereas this one is a belligerent tyrant on a tirade culminating him simply wanting everybody, friend or foe, to die. The confused look he gives at 3:27 always stuck with me, since it almost feels like he has a brief glimpse out of his delusions, only to snap back into it with the cross salute. Seriously so unsettling.
The irony of Germany "investigating" Rodget for performing this in concert ;-/
I know, right?
Is it really surprising? Not many European counties have a concept of the importance of free speech, let alone Germany
Really wish this orchestral version of In The Flesh was released...
It’s almost like it was meant for a brass band or orchestra.

I love Bob Geldof instead of Roger Waters in this part. Bob just brings this more light in this. I love how he sounds more crazy and it makes the character more awesome because you see that he has gone even more insane.
Absolutely agree. Waters' version is more melodious and he sounds like passive-agressive, but this one sounds overtly violent. The voice itself is so out-of-control and full of violence at one point it really matches the words.
Waters really channels the evil energy during live performances of the song. Something about that dictator get up really stirs up some malice
I can't imagine anyone but Bob playing this character, he nails it!
No imagination
Disagree. Waters sounds more condescending towards the crowd in the song, and it also sounds wayyyy better as an actual song than the film version ever will.
This is my favorite rendition of the song. The performance is amazing, you can really feel the fear and anger exploding from Pink.
I definitely prefer the album version musically, but the way Geldof screams "and that one's got SPOTS" is genuinely disturbing in an illuminating way, among other things

The album version was made to be more melodic. Many of the live performances were far closer to the movie.

The album version lacks the quior and the cheering crowd which makes all the build up fall flat
was there any song that went raw like this? i think its a pretty "post-modern" concept to be noisy like this in the studio album. nowadays i could 100% see this being released in the album. like, even Kendrick, whos not the most experimental, made the album version of "i" a pseudo live version.

@@Michael_Sangworth No sire, it's time for you to start crying and screaming. This movie, along with the Album's message is timeless and I'll tell you why. You could be a good person with a pure heart, but still fall into the downward spiral towards the very life you tried to avoid. Pink, lost his dad to world war 2 and his attempts to distance himself from that pain as well as others, turned him into the very thing that killed his father. A Nazi. The fact that you make such an off hand remark, because of whatever bullshit political views you have, shows how apt it is. You're becoming the very thing you're accusing others of being.

Help! I can’t stop watching this!
I wish I didn't live in a timeline where this is becoming relevant again, but here we are.
The 70s and 80s were a time of relentless queer bashing, so when Pink calls out for the queers to be put up against the wall, it wouldn't have raised too many eyebrows at first. Then he calls for Jews and Blacks to get the wall. And you think to yourself, well, I'm not Jewish or black, the worms won't come for me. And then Pink calls for the stoners and pimply teens listening to PF to GET! THE! WALL! and you realize, nobody is safe from this monster that Pink has become.
And that, I feel, was a firm message that Roger Waters wanted to send out with this song. Fascism is an ouroboros. It eventually eats itself in its relentless pursuit of an out-group to persecute. But it always brings down so many innocent in the process. You can see that in the violence displayed during Run Like Hell and Waiting for the Worms.
The only way to stop it is to kill it before it takes root. Don't wait for the worms, weed them out.

I remember my mum telling me an anecdote about the movie.
It was something along the lines of, when Bob Geldof agreed to play Pink he said that he’d only do it if he didn’t have to sing any of there songs, hence why he doesn’t sing in this scene and it’s also just more effective for the movie version I think personally. She also said that they only managed to get him to sing in the chorus of The Trail (I think it was).
I’ve not seen anyone else mention this or checked to see if I can find any validity to it but it’s still interesting, and I’m sure maybe it could’ve been in some magazine back in her day and therefore you won’t find online nowadays but who knows, if anyone else has heard this before though then let me know as I think it’s something more fans would find interesting to know if it’s true.
I don’t recall that, but I do remember interviews at the time where he stayed he actually was not much of a Pink Floyd fan (presumably because of that whole deal where punk-inspired musicians in the 70s/80s trashed prog) and decided to do it because he liked Alan Parker’s work. Especially Midnight Express.
Fantastic film if you like Pink Floyd you'll love this. Caution it's better when stoned 😎

He continued to earn praise for such varied films as the blockbuster Fame (1980), which centred on students studying at a high school for the performing arts in New York City; Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982), a musical inspired by the titular rock band’s album; and Mississippi Burning (1988), a drama about the killing of three civil rights workers in 1964.
