I saw The Cable Street Musical last night at Southwark Playhouse. Very highly recommended. Thanks for this very informative video. I vaguely knew the facts but this has educated me.
Another great presentation of an accident in british history. How can it be, that a former british socialist grows into a fascist monster? Reminds me of the story of Benito Mussolini, startin as a socialist writer, later turnin into "el duce". Or the british left wing band "crisis", later becomin the right wing band "southern death cult". Some kind of brain issue, personal problems or the greed to become a person of public interest? What are the reasons, to turn your view in an angle of 360°s. I'm just a german idiot, workin, with a creative vein, interested in history. Mosely and his party were briefly talked about, but not a lot. fyi in most schools it is not even in the history texts, only in the higher segment of education after basic school (untill ~12 year old) the historylessons are more extended. because i'm interested in history i listen to a radioprogram on the Dutch public radio every sundaymorning that handles all kinds of history of all times and all places. in this program i heard about this epic fight. there was mentioned that all the young lads had brought their marbles to throw under the hoofs of the horses when the police made a charge at the crowd so to make the horses fall before they could do much damage... 💪💪

Well I say fighting, they were given wooden guns so they couldn’t hurt the Irish They also slept under bushes even in the winter, they would hang their great coats over the bushes and they would wake up to them frozen in that shape in the morning

Found a country called Palestine, presumably occupied { and i use that word advisedly} by Palestinians. Do you know whatever happened to them, as i can't seem to find it on a current atlas. Also brought to mind something about the King David Hotel bombing, apparently the worst terrorist atrocity ever commited against British citizens. I'm a bit vague but do you know any of the details. I've never heard of the Battle of Cable Street. But twenty years ago, when I was still a university student, I wrote a paper on Mosley and the ideology of his party. I had never heard of him before then, either. He reminds me of Mussolini, who started his public life as an able socialist journalist. Mosley now seems more like a sad and bad joke nobody laughed at and which annoyed everyone. There's an interview with his Mitford wife available on RUclips. She's so upper-class I had trouble understanding her English. It's a historical document and worth watching.

If Mosley had had the sense to forgo the black uniforms his movement might have had more success in the arena of British politics. He forgot that the wearing of uniforms in public is not the British way. Consequently, most Britons thought Mosley and his fascists were rather silly. As George Orwell observed, if fascism ever came to England, in order to be accepted by the wider British public it would have had to adopt a front of respectability where traditional conventions were outwardly observed. In short, Mosley should have worn pinstripes and ties instead of a black uniform and jackboots.

The 'fascist' side was mostly teenagers, indigenous English from the working class east end they numbered around 3,000 and around a quarter of them were teenage girls; The anti fascist side numbered around 200,000 and we're a mixture of communists, Jewish Zionists and academics, mostly middle class or wealthy people The two groups never met as the police couldn't control the violent communists and the march was called off The only incident was a small group of Blackshirts (who were going early to set up podium of sorts I believe) were attacked, famously Tommy Moran boxed about a dozen communists single handedly before being hit with a wooden bat wrapped with barbed wire (you can actually see this on the footage)
