These recaps are gold. I was two years old when this campaign was in full swing, so I obviously have no recollection of it, but now I feel like I was there watching the whole thing from start to finish.
Thank you. Appreciate it!
I was 11. It’s the earliest presidential campaign I have any direct memory of, though I wasn’t paying much attention to it. I remember who the nominees were, I remember “Read my lips” (funny it didn’t get mentioned in this video, I think it was fairly important), but that’s about it.
I hope to see recaps of 2000-2020 as you give the best objective recaps of these elections. This video is a gold standard electoral analysis
Thank you! The first part of the 2016 recap is on the channel and we're finishing up part two now. There are also profiles related to the 2008 race as well. Hope you subscribe and thanks again!
That debate was beautiful to watch. They still got some quips in, but they weren't talking over each other or just insulting.
The debates in 88 looked like they were amazing. Lively but thoughtful for the most part. Disagreements on policy, sometimes very big.
Love your docs. How did you not cover the tank photo op disaster 😂
The Bush ad, that used it quite effectively, is there!
Very good and unbiased summary, thank you
Pretty much he last time you will ever see anyone with 400 plus electoral votes and winning 40 states
Oh wow 14:54 I wonder how seriously George HW Bush considered that before/during his first campaign. Quite a prophetic thing for Larry King to say.
Yep, Bush ended up losing re-election to Bill Clinton in 1992
1:10:59 George W. Bush here didn't know that he will became the president
Amazing, just finished 84 and I'm starting this one. So funny that Biden became president 32 years later. Must be a record. 7:44. Btw this is great editing
It’s crazy too because his supporters aren’t smart enough to believe he actually lied and cheated again in 2020 as well but got away with it that time
I probably shouldn't say this but. When daddy Bush was sworn in January 20, 1989. It was awesome. Watching these docs brings back so many memories. The technology at that time was pretty bad.
Daddy Bush came to my Corp. headquarter to gave an award and commence for what he called "bullet that designed to capable to strike another bullet" after the Gulf War had ended. When Clinton was elected, 65% of us were terminated for poor performance and lost all years of services!
@@johnmadow5331 Wow I'm not a fan of daddy Bush he ran a terrible campaign in 1992. He vaginally said , "Won deserve Shield, no new taxes, what time is it, I'm a one termer" he was done. He was my first Presidential vote,, I didn't like Clinton.
This was fantastic!
Thank you! !
Campaign ads always make me laugh. By the time it's all over, you're convinced that both candidates are evil incarnate.
15:00 Larry King called that perfectly
It wasn't a mass depression though. The early 1990 recession was one of the mildest
@@mlml8018 yea ok
Very comprehensive and well done presentation. I loved reliving the ‘88 campaign. Where did this air back in ‘88? Was it just a personal VHS recording, or was it on cable TV somewhere?
Superb work here. I love all your election recaps. Do you have 2000 or 2004?
Unfortunately no. However I’m finishing up 2016 now, which will be the beginning of a documentary trilogy!
@@JimHeathChannel Thanks for the reply! I look forward to it.
HW Bush would call other world leaders on the telephone,he had personal friendships with them.HWBush built a truly amazing 30 some country coalition in 1990-91.
And then went on to have the most impressive military victory in modern history with that coalition
“Wouldn’t be prudent at this juncture.”
Not to be a killjoy but your thumbnail is wrong. Bush carried Maryland not Dukakis
Does it have the footage where Dukakis said that if we elected Joe Biden he would be America's LAST President?!?!? I remember that quote so vividly!!!
I don’t believe that quote was ever made. If you have a link to it, I would love to see it. There is clearly no love lost between Biden and Dukakis in 1988, but I know they have remained friends to this day.
Copyright cops got the original version (noticed that the segments where "God Bless the USA" would have been were edited out)?
We made an appeal to Lee Greenwood that his song God Bless the USA was part of telling the story of the Reagan and Bush campaigns, but his management did not agree. So, sadly, he is no longer part of our documentaries. Thanks for noticing!
@@JimHeathChannel Really love these!
Are you planning on making any of these for elections before 1984?
I was in the first grade when this election took place. It's the first election in my lifetime that I remember anything about.
I've been reading up on Lee Atwater. This election is what made him famous or infamous in political history. Do you think it was his aggressive campaign strategy that got Bush elected or was Dukakis just that unlikable? My dad said he was too arrogant. Also had Lee lived how would he go about Bush's reelection campaign? He would have a field day with Clinton.
Well a mix of both. Bush was behind by 15-20 points after the convention so he needed to destroy Dukakis and he did that. But Dukakis was only a replacement for Gary hart and he never really explained why he should be president. That and his boring personality allowed bush to destroy him and make him a joke.
Hey Dukakis are uou going to campaign in your tank?
I was living and working with a major state DoD in MA at that time, Dukakis was a governor and pleg that "If I became a US president, I will diaarms this country" . He also, send an order to the chief of police to stop issuing and renewing a gun permit in MA. My permit was set to expire in August and I can not set up an appointment for finguer print because there was a record of the running number of time for appointment that so very far away from the expeiration date of the permits and by the laws the state can take your gun due to lack of permit. I had called the chief of police appointment and I was told that there is nothing he can do. I spoke to my connection and get my permit renewal on time. I spoke to people in MA that I work with and they do not like Mr. Dukakis and hate his party and insure that noone will vote for him!
@@johnmadow5331 How did he win MA if nobody liked the little communist? He was never going to win after the tank commander ad, and the question about the raping of his wife. Bush pushed him over with the Willie Horton ad.
Dukakis had MASSIVELY large eye brows
The beneficiary of Dukakis' downfall in 1988: Five-term Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton (D).
Two-term Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton.
The year of my birth
The dewey ike nixon bases were still alive and the fdr bases almost dwindled by 1988. Macros are more important than tanks or hortons or kittys
3:35. Some things never chance...........
I wonder, if Gore doesn’t work so hard to kneecap Gephardt, would Gephardt have won the nomination with a better showing in Super Tuesday? He probably would have been a stronger candidate than Dukakis
“The West was solidly Republican” lol
How things have changed
The south for most of the existence of the United States was democrat. Now it’s as republican is it can be my district is 85% Republican in South Carolina.
Depends on what you consider the west. Excluding the coast, Idaho and Utah are solid red, my state of AZ voted red every election of my life except the last and is polling very red at the moment, Nevada is expected to flip red, Montana is red, and Colorado is becoming a wild card in the polls
@@bigpapi6688nevada hasn't been consistently this solid red in mock polls in nearly 2 decades. Hasn't been won by the red since 2004. Right now shows a double digit lead for Donald. Another very alarming Stat is NEW YORK where Joe only has a 5 point lead, which makes it a swing state which sounds laughable sure, but recent polls show just a single digit lead. Not saying it's gonna go red of course, but still should be alarming for the democrats
I can't believe how easily Bush carried Colorado and New Mexico. Things sure do change.
Election '24 is coming
Great doc! Tom Kean's speech was so lame it isn't funny
And yet, it was a precursor to modern Republican politics.
far superior to modern Democrat politics!!!
@@tbewin1z143 If you want to buy into dimwitted nonsense, your funeral, not mine.
Let's debate this Andre, because that's a big accusation!
@@tbewin1z143 Gladly.
Dukakis should have won this. However HW Bush is the only Republican president I like.He was a master at foreign policy.
3:26
7:35. The Democrats wish they still had the Joe Biden from 1988 and not 2024 in the White House right now because even tho he's still wrong about what he says at least he can still think clearly enough to say them 🤔.
