I've always found carter's presidency as something interesting very successful for what he was allowed to do. I would have returned the Shah to Iran in a minute instead of sacrificing a single American life. That is what Carter should have done. The Shah was a brutal dictator. Domestic events dominated his presidency, and made things very hard for him. But he is NOT anywhere near the worst president mark. He championed peace, human rights, and is the only president in modern times not to fire a single bullet towards another country. If it`s true that Reagan`s team prolonged the agony for the hostages for political gain, it`s a massive political scandal, and a HUGE minus for President Reagan. This is crap. Carter was warned about the Shah's weakened position at the same time telling the Shah not to retaliate against the forces fighting him. So the Shah's timidness resulted in his overthrow. In February 1979 the embassy was briefly seized though there was a resolution it should have warned the US government of how unstable Iran was and withdrew from the country. At the very least remove all US personnel from the country before allowing the Shah into the US.
