- K1, aka Masherbrum, is a jagged peak that has been overshadowed by the infamous K2. However, K1 is an even more difficult ascent; one of the hardest mountains to climb in the entire world, and few climbers dare attempt to ascend its steep, treacherous slopes.

So, he wandered off by mistake and found shelter. Then slid 1000 feet down a slope and was largely uninjured? Was this guy just loading previous saves?
He had an achievement to unlock and didn't care how many retries it took to get it.
It sounds nuts but they spend a few days at this crazy high altitude before the summit assault. Imagine doing hard labor and only being able to take one shallow breath every ten seconds.. it’s almost like choking. That’s how it is the last quarter of K2.. you make one poor decision in an oxygen deprived stupor and you die. It’s a brutal mountain. Look up Annapurna mountain. It’s killed like 35% of all climbers who have tried.
Altitude sickness is no joke.. and it picks its victims at random. An out of shape fat guy can do fine at high altitude where an Olympic athlete can drop dead.. and you don’t know which you are til you’re up there.
People always asking me me why are you always out climbing a mountain ⛰️, and I'm like "Dude, because it's their"!..... damn bro, I like sound smart

Ever notice how every fall is 1,000 ft?
Ironic that the climber who strayed off the path ended up surviving. So many times that ends in disaster. Then to climb down one of the most difficult mountains solo. That's an amazing feat.
And then fell 1,000 feet. That's one way to get down a mountain fast. Another is a wing suit.
As soon as the narrator got to that part, I thought Heinrich was a goner, but turns out he avoided sharing his climbing partners' fate by straying off.
Dude had God on his side. He got lost which spared him from freezing to death in the wind, then he fell 1,000 feet off an ice cliff at 24,000 feet and somehow still made it.
I wonder if the mountaineer returned to camp was aided by his fall. No one can repeat the route because the fall is integral to it’s successful descent.
Probably won’t ever be willingly repeated, but yes definitely aided his decent.

I’m fascinated by mountain climbing which is odd because I’m terrified of heights and hate to be cold!
Many mountain climbers also hate both of those things, some fears have a magnetism, some don't I guess.

That’s totally bad ass never knew about the imposing impossibly of K-1 it’s never going anyplace but the expedition costs of sherpas alone and experienced enough climbers ( ten world wide ?) , no one is willing to temp fate I loved your Ogre Mountain video BTW your productions are always a treat .
It’s a stupid tough climb. Everest from the south Col is pretty easy. No route of K2 is easy. It kills a ton of people a year and they are REAL mountaineers.
Altitude sickness, avalanche, or crevasse.. you’ve got like a 1 in 5 chance of one of those killing you. Brutal.

Lookup “David Snow” his whole channel is real footage of mout rain expeditions to Everest.. most are intense. Lots of climbing deaths and you watch the teams process that while still having to climb. It’s truly sobering inspiring stuff. 🫡

Huh...so there IS a "K1"...
There are number of k's going up to double digits in the karakoram range, but they are simply known by their more popular local names instead. The k designations was given by the british during their 'Survey of India' during late 19th century
They should have used the “clane technique” for the final summit push.
Or as it was once called “wax on, wack off” technique.
This climbing style is a variation of the fukawee style of mountaineering.

Two, or even a few more, people losing their lives anywhere, is not a "disaster", but a tragedy. Nevertheless, I admire your work, and encourage you to keep at it, well done!

Very interesting to learn that “K1”, which appears to be a very tall, demanding, and technical mountain seemingly is ascended only on very, very rare occasions, yet “K2” - also a very tall, demanding, technical mountain - is ascended somewhat frequently.
Is this just because Nepal and China are more welcoming nations than Pakistan? I have no idea; only guessing.
K2 is an 8000 plus peak, the second tallest in the world, that's the reason
I'm hooked. Also, when you say the height in meters, and on the screen show the elevation in feet it is nice. Also PLEASE describe on the screen how high in miles. Beside the foot elevation. Would be awesome. IE: K2 is 5.35 miles high.
most americans know a mile is 5280 feet so it would be redundant.
I am an American who wants to be more “fluent” in metric and also appreciate both sets of units.

Mountains are usually talked about in either km's or feet, so miles would be like a third wheel IMO.

So this is pretty much one of the mountains with the least number successful summits? That says a lot about its obscure difficulty, I was surprised to hear there were camps in the mountain because I was certain there was nothing over there since it's so difficult unnoticed no one bothers with it.
Camps are what is set up by individual expeditions. They are permanent sites on well traveled routes but each major expedition sets up waypoints along the way for people to acclimatize and support people to stay.

@@maureenoh2 oh well, I thought there were only permanent/periodic camps like the ones you find on everest or k2, didn't know there were just provisory camps for one expedition alone. Thanks for the information.

He did everything right, but still he had 0 chance.

But dang, he was probably the best climber on that mountain that night and the only one that perished who did everything by the book and had the needed gear to survive even without the fixed ropes, but was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

@@martinkirugi254 Seriously, I can't even imagine. I can't even imagine climbing the 14Kers we have here in the US, much less the behemoths in the Himalayas that get up over 25K feet.
These mountains fascinate me...but I can confidently say that you'll never find me on one of those. I'm not good with heights, so I think that pretty much rules me out of mountain climbing.
@@nickreynolds8391 same case here. Heights frighten me too so mountain climbing is not my thing but I love seeing documentaries about them. The highest thing I have climbed is a hill in my hometown.

Nobody would recover those from that part of the mountain, that’s basically almost never climbed. Guy almost died descending from there, who’s gonna risk going back for 2 bodies?

Grandmothers and double amputees have climbed to the summit of Everest. Try to climb K1 and prove your worth.
It all depends on the route.
There are still at least two routes up Everest that have never been conquered.
You can take the train to the top of the Eiger-
They’ll even stop and let you clip on a safety line and lean out for a stupid selfie…
Over in Peru,
Mount Chimborazo's summit is approximately 2,100 meters (6,890 feet) farther from the Earth's center than Everest's summit,
despite being almost 2,600 meters
(8,530 feet) lower in elevation.
Thus,it is that much closer to space,
as well.
This is due to the bulge in the Earth that actually places Chimborazo’s summit above the peak of Everest.
It’s pretty funny to me that all those people going up Everest mistakenly believe that they are climbing to the highest spot on Earth.

@@j.griffinI’m not sure if you know this, but because we’re ants living on earth’s skin, we don’t measure mountain height in distance from earth’s core, we measure it in distance from sea level (the surface of the skin)
That’s a cute little sciencey nerd fact but it means absolutely nothing to mountaineering, since you’re not starting your journey from the core of the earth. The height to the skin surface below Chimborazo is lesser than the height to the skin surface below Everest. That’s what we determine peaks from.
But yes, technically Chimborazo is the “roof of the world” if you were surveying as an alien

I am pretty skeptical about people claiming to have summited certain peaks in the earlier 1900's as there is not much proof and people could have attempted the summit, never actually made it and come back down claiming they did for the glory! Am i the only skeptic here 🤔

Well look here! More proof of my narrative that really, outside of the baseball field and the singles bar, confidence and optimism are actually super dumb. Although it's less romantic, fear and negativity are much more useful.
