HOW TO FIX LEAKING KERDI SHOWER ---No Need to Remove Entire Shower!!!

- This homeowner saved about $10,000 when we were able to repair this leaking tile shower. Instead of having to remove the entire shower, we were able to just remove the pan, the curb, and the bottom row of wall tile. While this repair is done routinely on older types of shower waterproofing, it is much more difficult to do correctly when using a Schluter Kerdi or foam system. This video explains in detail how to do it the right way.

I enjoyed the instrumental “Oh Holy Night” music. Kinda of a goodbye to the holidays. Cheers Isaac.
I love how all this new way stuff needs repairs. I've never needed to repair the old Oatey rubber membrane. I spoke with a Shluter rep, asked him why Tile Coach put up a video on Schluter leaking after the 24 hour test. Repairs said its not a pool. It's made to withstand 24 hours bit no one ever keeps water in a shower that long. Very poor answer. The main thing is that it eventually leaked. Sometimes the old way seems like it works best. That rubber pan just won't leak as long as you don't puncture it with nails or screws
It's also much more forgiving for a DIYer to install.
The original Kerdi system was likely installed incorrectly, nothing to do with new or old. Wedi, KBRS, and other similar foam board systems are easy to use, but an installer still needs to educate themselves on how to make it work right. Clearly they didn't in this original install.
Ive yet to pull out a rubber liner that hadnt leaked. Thing is, thats why i called in to tear them out. Leak at the drain and at every corner. All comes back to proper installation, regardless the product
Did you even watch the original video showing why it failed? The installer wasn't experienced with kerdi and this was his first time using it and didn't use a corner band in the area it was leaking. So don't blame the product. There's pros and cons to different methods but if kerdi was always leaking and inferior, they wouldn't be in business
Honestly it’s people who don’t know how to do kerdi correctly what causes these new showers to fail. If you do it right, it won’t ever happen. Take extra steps to make sure there are backups to a possible failure and your fine. I’ve never had a bonded shower fail since I’ve started using them. It’s all about time and effort put into your job.
You the man! You gave me confidence to do mine. I’m definitely calling you if mine fails thanks for your videos . Love you too bro .i live in Fresno so it won’t be that far of a drive
This is amazing, exactly what I needed to see to repair. Got a wood 2x4 curb that failed, got swollen with water and started popping tiles and grout. Gonna try it myself, and worst case half the demo is done if I fuck it up lol.
Why did the curb fail?
The more I watch these the less I want a tiled shower. That said I love your enthusiasm and attention to detail. You are a great teacher and a master of the craft. Looks like you even got to endorse those RSS products. That's really saying something and if I ever did put in a tiled shower or had it done I would certainly demand everything you use. Thx coach and well done
Is just a preference! We use Schluter Kerdi for all our showers and we never had any problems.
KBRS and GoBoard make for an easy and rock solid install, not to mention, waterproof!
can you use hydroban liquid to go under/over/inbetween the sheets/fabric and the kbsr basin for 100% waterproofing?
I absolutely LOVE the way you diagnose the problem, though I like the Schluter system, I have always wondered the defined importance of following every installation detail. Customers ask why it has to take so long to build a shower and man I feel like wackin them one, quality has to take careful planning and most of all careful, careful Installation. In the long run it is cheaper to do it right the first round...don't I know it! Great work you guys do, absolutely awesome walk-through. Have a great week! Andrew. Ontario 🇨🇦
I just did some investigating and will probably need to do this repair. The problem will be finding a contractor - few people want to try to fix someone else's mistakes. And fewer still will be happy when I am watching every step of the waterproofing process!
I just ordered a RSS Pro Shower System and look forward to installing in a remodel. Love that it's an American Company based in Idaho and supporting American is a priority in all my purchases. They'll also make the pan to your exact size which to me was important as I did not want to move the existing drain location. Thank you for introducing them to me and I hope you continue to support them so that more of your viewers and subscriber's like me will do business with them. Loved the music choice and God Bless.
Thanks for the tutorial. This video has given me the confidence that a shower pan can be repaired without tearing out the whole thing. Way to go, you guys rock and keep up the great work👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thank you,Isaac! I ordered Flo FX drain for a very reasonable price. It delivered on the exact day, promised and was super easy to install. The square design and ease of last minute adjustment made for a big help as I at moms not a professional! Thanks for all your instructive videos.
That’s why I applied aque defense on top on my kerdi joints, bench and pan. Working perfectly so far.
Man! You are a Pro! Been watch for a couple of years and have learned so much about new tile products from experimentation and onsite work. Your contributions to my skills is much appreciated!
So I've been to Schluter's installation workshop where you can see ~15 teams working on the same shower pan assembly. It is awesome training but one thing I noticed the most? People putting down too little or gone off thinset on the joints where two boards come together. They give you a specific size trowel but if you don't hold it correctly you can end up with very little thinset under that band, and then it's pretty much guaranteed you'll get a failure there. Two inches of band either side of the joint is not enough coverage in my opinion. I'd use more thinset and do 4 inches (8inch wide bands) to give yourself a little more forgiveness and ensure a good install.
Very interested in the RSS board. Cool video
Thanks Issac for the informative and instructional videos on how to do a pan replacement without a complete tear out. I also like your investigative approaches to such failures and the cause of the failures. That insight helps us in our approach and product selections. I had a much larger company with several crews and fully subbed out all my tile work. We generally only roughing in the shower framing and there forward the tile person would do the waterproofing tile setting grouting, etc. My person retired and I can’t find any qualified individuals in my area in York Pennsylvania that can do the high-end work to the degree we need them for so we have taken on that aspect ourselves. Since Covid, I have downsized and I’m doing the showers myself and our company has fully focused on kitchen and bath work entirely mainly bathrooms. I’m very interested in the revolutionary shower system and sheet membrane. I’ve also directed some others in the trade to the Flow FX drains. Keep doing what you’re doing and thanks again from another brother in the field!! Your awesomeness astounds me!!
Hey Tile coach. I hope im not being intrusive with this question. If I remember correctly in one of your videos you talked about being sober. Maybe I am not remembering correctly. But if that is true I give you alot of credit. I'm also getting sober. About a week now. I look forward to the sober life. Thanks for the videos.
Tileredi for the win! Great example of the flaws with the kerdi system.
Funny how I just did this type of work in a bathroom, this shower had subway tiles it was a pain to remove them. I’m working go on a second shower in the same house. I used the Schluter pans and membrane for both. Both pans passed the flood test but after seeing your videos I ran out and bought some red guard and applied it on top of the membrane. I haven’t got any call backs on other showers I’ve done but it doesn’t hurt to be safe. Thank you for your videos keep on spreading your knowledge.
Another fantastic video. Thanks for the forensic breakdown of what happened and the fix! Well done.
This is a great video. I love the step by step communication and forward and backward documentation within the video. Love it!
MAN THAT WAS A STUNNING FIX VERY NICE AND VERY GOOD VIDEOS!!
Another great video. Love watching this stuff.
The woodworker in me cringes every time I see you using that wood chisel. Always good information in your videos totally appreciated!
thanks coach! much appreciated!
Awesome video as usual. I’m not sure why installers think the directions don’t apply!! It’s so very important to do a water test, people around here in Kentucky don’t seem to. I do, it helps me to stand out. Keep up the good works coach
Hey issac, nice job. I have had to do this twice in the last two years, both showers were like 8-10 years old and both had failed at the drain and had cracked grout on the curbs, I was not the original installer. I had never done this type of repair before both home owners didn’t have the money to do a complete shower redo so I repaired them with kerdi in this same fashion. It worked out great! Had zero reports of issues. Glad to see I’m not the only one willing to roll the dice and repair the floor and curb and replaced bottom row of tile as you did here. Only difference was I used red guard along the joint on the wall just to be sure it wasn’t gonna be an issue down the road. Again, nice job bro.
Love your videos, keep up the good work ! God bless
Enjoyed both videos on 5his shower! Very informative! Have parents and a sister who had a stroke who have a bathtub old shower they cannot use sadly, so trying to figure out some way I can tackle this myself! You seem like a Awesome guy! Will look for more tutorials from you before I try and tackle anything! Lol Thank you for playing a beautiful background song also! One of my favorites of all time! 😊 God bless you and yours!!
I love watching your videos!
Thank you for this video. I have 2 showers done by a flipper where the tiles over the pan were done after the wall tiles. The pan tiles are peeling up on all 4 sides. (We don’t use either shower, because we have a shower tub as well.) This is what I was thinking of doing in late winter to fix them both.
Great video. I enjoyed the Christmas music during the timelapse.
I wish I would have went with this system. I still haven’t installed the pan but I’ve already bought the shower kit and used the kerdi on the walls. So can’t take it back. I do need more curb tho. Wonder if I could use these curbs up against my Schluter pan that I can’t take back. Anyone have any insight on what I could or should do? I love watching these videos tho! Guy has a great spirit about him that makes him nice to listen to. You can hear the integrity in his voice. IMO.
THANKS FOR WHAT YOU DO
Always great videos, its interesting how different the methods you use differ from how its done in Europe, we used tanking and slot in shower trays
Thanks for sharing!
Nice video Isaac you make the world bedder and bedder❤
Awesome video...thank you
Awesome stuff
I appreciate all your videos. Thank you for all the videos.
Beautiful working time already s good work and your management working to the this job is good
Beautiful music on the speed up. One of my favorite songs.
Thank you for your great videos. I have seen your processing error in your old schlüter Kerdi video. The strips in the edge area must always overlap. That is, the edge strips must be led all the way into the corner. The Kerdi waterproofing membrane may be glued with flow adhesive. The edge strips and corners must be glued with a two-component resin, otherwise it is not tight. The thin membrane has the advantage that it is very flexible and therefore remains tight for a long time when the fundation moves.
Thanks for both of these video series of Kerdi Board done wrong. After watching this video, I had plan to DIY a Kerdi system but now on the fence for 2 reason. The possibility of doing a repair in the future seems delicate than the old way and how the Kerdi curb is hollow.
I was replacing my tub drain and broke the pvc drain pipe. One thing led to another and now the tub and walls are removed. The goal now is to make it into a shower.
Tile coach, I need your expertise … Tucson, AZ.
I have done very similar repair work, it’s possible, but it’s extremely laborious. It never fails to amaze me how incredibly shoddy some of the installers out there are. Like, a lot of them.
Nice job
2 days. Damn. It's taken me a week so far and I'm only at the "expose backing behind tiles" stage. 😅
We've been using a dishwasher hose rigged up to our sink, connected to a handheld sprayer taped to our shower curtain rod while the shower is out of commission...
(I'm only removing part of the wall so a plumber can move our shower valve. The shower is still usable with plastic sheeting taped over the 2'x3' hole.)
Thanks for all the awesome videos! Getting. ready to demo a leaking shower pan in my bathroom and wanting to know which is the best system. PVC liner or Kerdy, RSS?...
This was very impressive and as you mentioned a great "less extensive" repair then a complete removal and install. When you are finishing the wall tile to the floor, what is your recommended process? Thanks!!!
Awesome !!!
MANY THANKS
Hardi backer walls is a plus in this situation....I find that it delaminates the first layer when you have to do a repair on it opposed to cement board that is damn near impossible to pull tile off of without ripping it to shreds.
Unless the cement board has a waterproof membrane, then you can get tile off without total destruction
What a great video and knowledge from someone who clearly loves his job thanks enjoyed and subscribed
i know you're a pro, but damn, cover up that shower drain man! you're living life on the wild side. Thanks for the content.
This channel honestly made me worried about any shower being installed in any of the houses we own and manage, just going to stick with the common tub.
Just don't hire the 1st Joe that gives a bid. Ask questions and references.
I agree the flowfx drain and the solid curb are nice. However, the RSS seems like the exact same system WITH and extra step of applying the membrane on the pan. My understanding is the failures in any of these systems is in the corners and seams. Not with the overall structure or thickness of the membranes. I know redgard/aqua defense etc probably void warranties. But it really is safe insurance to just throw a few coats down on the finished pans to ensure you have a nuclear proof shower.
Also use Anti-hydro in your grout to waterproof it too, but thats too old school. Liquid Insurance is what I call it. Been in the tile game since 83, do mostly high end custom residentials. I copy you. I feel you can never go too overboard by simply adding a couple layers of a wp memb, simply pennies and minutes versus a failure. You give water somewhere to go, it will find it.
Isaac is the best ❤
nica video as always, have you tiled a wall with a round window about 28" diameter. I looked all over could not find a single tip about it
I would really like to see you do a KBRS or Tile Redi pan install, and compare to a “board” style pan.👍
Great video as always! Do you have any thoughts on the tile redi tile able shower pans ?? At first glance it looks like it would save a load of work but perhaps it is quite pricey
Thanks for these videos. I'm a DIY'er and watching your channel has given me the courage to tile my shower. Question, I'm using Schluter board ( 2Walls). Is there any con to using Hydro Ban as an additional protection after I've sealed the schluter board as per instructions?
Great job trying to do it right as always. I notice when you trowel the back of tile you clean edge. Be careful not to close up your ridges check out Tcna guidelines just a thought. Good job as always. If I get a chance to go out there I will pay for your golf fee. Lol
Thanks
A good reminder that storing extra square footage of your tile can make a difference if the shower fails in the future.
I agree and have two boxes of every wall and floor tile used in the house as spares and they're stored in the attic where they're not disturbed.
Too much thin-set between the membrane layers creates a wicking path for water and leads to water retention / mold behind the tile. There was way too much thin-set behind that tile and between the membranes. It looks like the old school installer floated a mud bed over the kerdi. You have to flatten foam board systems from the back by fixing the framing, Shimming or wet setting the board and fastening after the wet set hardens. Also let the install fully cure before flood testing. Some times more is not better follow the instructions and the system will work. For every failure there are tens of thousands of successful installs for every system out there.
Great vid. Did u add any liquid applied waterproofing on the floor before the pebbles went down?
The kerdi board act as the membrane, no liquid membrane is added
Question if you have a second. I’m putting in a full Schluter-Systems system with there foam floor as well. Would you recommend coating the floor and drain and floor corners with a hydro ban to try and keep that Kerdi drain from breaking down in the long run?
I’m looking at putting in a culture marble base for the shower with tile walls. Is culture marble a good product in your opinion? Currently have a tile base that has failed similar to this video.
Do you have any videos on a steam shower install?
On the rss waterproofing band, what are you using to attach it? Schluter all set?
No flood test before tile? What about the seat waterproofing since the original installer clearly did not do the corner water proofing. How do you know the seat was waterproofed correctly?
I have a question, can I use ditra over my plywood subfloor, then dry mortar pan and then kerdi on top? My house is very old and the foundation is not the strongest so I am afraid that the movement of the house structure may affect the tile.
Tile guy. Why don’t you use a topical application after you install the corners and bands. I thought thinset wicks. So it might make its way thru under the bands and corners. Thanks. Love the channel.
What's the thinnest you could go with dry-pack as you get to a linear drain. I have heard min of 3/4" but I've also heard 1 1/4". Is there a way to modify the mixture to allow for a thinner application? (Needing to minimize height)
Quick question. Why do you put the board on the wall before the pan goes down. I thought you wanted the wall to come down to the foam pan? I guess it just doesn't matter since you are waterproofing all the seams.
May I ask why do they not use a plastic shower tray like they do in the uk.
I guess they like fancy.
I have a question. When you are putting those pieces in the corners and over the cracks what is being used to put those down?
Do you recommend the Kerdi system or is there a better system for a DYI?
I like the Christmas music
Question? Does it matter if the mud you put on the floor flows one way and the mud on the tile flows the opposite way? And is it the same process when tilling a ceiling?
I have a shower like this but i believe it's leaking from the drain/drain seal(square 4inch ish drain). Is it possible to replace just the drain seal(from above the shower, no underneath access)? Is it as "simple" as popping out just the drain assembly and tossing in new seal or will I have to excavate some river rock flooring around it first?
Do you use banding and corners on all the RSS pans you do. That one didn't have the morter type coating I think. 👌
Did you bring the pan & drain down with you from Sacramento or purchase from a local tile supply house?
I'm a GC from San Luis Obispo who has been watching your videos and was interested in trying that RSS system on the next shower install , but so far I haven't seen it around here.
He has a link to their website in the description. You have to contact them for a quote. Probably expensive, but I agree that it looks like a great system.
I live in LA will this method. Pass inpection?
Anyone you would recommend in the so cal area
So what makes your stuff better then schluters
different color. It still uses thinset which will wick water over time.
No flood test for the repair? Also, this was a chance for the owners to get rid of the pebble tiles that will cause so much grout problems and up keep!
So where can a Revolution shower system be purchased? It looks similar to schluter but obviously better
how did you remove the old drain so clean?
you put sheet membrane over the entire foam pan, isn't the rss pan waterproof? i also typicall do the pan waterproof prior to th wall board adding and additional safeguard to water(no vertial seam). just curious.
Hi Issac, I’m building a house in Baja California Sur about 45 minutes north of Cabo. I have a question about how to waterproof the shower floor that has already been pre-sloped into a 2” drain. I want to make sure that no water is able to wick into the slab below or through the cement block walls to the rest of the bathroom floor because I’m installing Saltillo floors throughout the home including the bathroom and want to avoid any efflorescence.
Most homes like that have no waterproofing, and sandy soils allow everything to drain away under the slab. As long as its just cinder block walls, nothing can get damaged especially in a very arid environment like Baja
So need to worry about efflorescence with my Saltillo tile in the same bathroom. We do have sand for soil and it is very arid like you said but I also know that concrete wicks any moisture and it usually travels up instead of down towards the sand. @@TileCoach
I am currently building a shower for my mother. I did my research and seemed like Kerri was the best way. Have I made a bad decision or is this stuff just caused by improper installation. My project needs to be the last time there is a shower put in her house.
Can you test the GURU system?
I did not see the requisite kerdi band connecting the floor to the preformed seat. That would have helped to prevent the wicking I think.
I recently did a DYI bathroom reno and decided to try out the Kerdi system. I'm not a professional, just a dumbass who watches RUclips videos and thinks he can do stuff (it usually turns out pretty good!). Anyway, my take on it is that I will never use a foamboard product like Kerdi again. My reason - the stuff is really lightweight, and I worry about how a repair (like this one) will be affected by the "fragility" of a product like foam board. In fact, in my project, I had to re-solder some piping after the board and tile was installed because of a pin hole leak. I had access to the piping via an access panel in a closet behind the shower, but I can tell you that sweating a pipe near a foam board product wasn't fun.
Maybe these are good products for pros, but I'd stay away from them if you are a DYI-er and do a bathroom once every 10 years or so.
So as a newbie, I haven't got all the buzz words down yet, let me stumble through this.... the shower is a 3x5 with a center drain... one of the kits available...
I'd like to lower the curb, say to about 2" above the highest part of the foam pan...
With out measuring I'm guessing this would lower the curb a couple of inches, maybe a little more, to easy entry for someone who has balance and lifting issues...
Where’s the next video when they finish it ?
Can you add Redgard over the Kerdi for redundancy?
Why not sponge down concrete prior to thinset to give concrete a drink and promote better bonding?
Great but i still would of put red guard or adex 9 .
