    I really hope that COVID forces governments and people to develop their economies and businesses in a post tourism sense.
    We don’t need the tourism of Instagram selfies. Tourism to learn can be replaced with the multitudes of resources available in libraries and online, even to chat with locals.

    I see this a lot from the Hotel that employes me. Eco-key initiatives, towel re-usage, recycle everything despite that everything cannot be recycled but then I see the implementation of gas fireplaces outside of the hotel, these are propane much like your bbq but without the heat and just for looks. People do not realize that these pits of propane run 8-11hrs a day for no reason. We dump water into the pool system likes it free. When a baby shits in the pool the cost is outrageous. All that water must be dumped into the sewage lines and then the pool is refilled with fresh potable water. How about the air conditioning in newer hotels that run a sealed environment system, when those fail it usually results in the system dumping tonnes of CFC R12 that's the ozone depleting type. Many hotels run with older HVAC systems because they can get away with the cheaper systems and your local HVAC technician really appreciates all of the daily maintenance in $/manhr. Newer, better systems are out there but they cost an enourmous amount of money to install, if it was not done at the Hotels conception. So, don't be fooled by ECO anything if it involves some company making money off of that impression.

    The only brutually honest thing you could have said is to STOP travelling half way round the world to these places. Hopefully COVID will make long haul travel costs so expensive that only a few will be able to travel to these destinations, and we can all see these places on Instagram. It would be good to see tourism dying down|out, esp with all the problems it causes.

    • @rethinkingtourism4862
      @rethinkingtourism4862  4 года назад +5

      You are not incorrect. But trying to balance that with the reality of travel. Might be easier to get someone in London to choose Greece over South Africa if they are looking for a tan...instead of telling them they can't go anywhere. Not going to tell everyone they must be vegan tomorrow or only buy 2nd hand clothes... if it's too extreme, people will likely tune out.

      @@rethinkingtourism4862 Veganism, the new Organic...something for the middle classes like Extinction Rebellion, another thing to make you feel better about yourself and having no impact at all. I know where you're coming from and don't disagree you can't go heavy handed. Package holidays, cheap flights, social media, bucket lists, gap years, etc. have made people believe it's their "right" to go where ever and whenever they like to, well now you have millions of Chinese and Indians to add to that number...see the problem? It's a problem of numbers, ever been to a Mediterranean town/city when the cruise ships dock? The rise in airbnb lets pricing local people out of their home towns, Barcelona for instance. And then you have to ask yourself why do people need to fly anywhere to get skin cancer? I just don't think that's realistic, responsible or sustainable long term, especially post-Covid. Maybe people would do better re-framing their expectations.

Having done it I just find it a self indulgence and not worth the time or expense, tbh.

      @@CheetSheatOverlodeTrue, some people will always "want" to travel, but the cost and accessibility of cheap travel is driven by numbers.
      Societies existed for thousands of years where some peoples" extent of their world was their villages/towns and they survived with no ill effects, as we are evidence of that. We didn't evolve by be coming tourists... We actually made the world less safe by doing so...current pandemic being an example.
      What we need to do to lessen the damage is limit our range and mode of our travel to be effective.

  • @equesvulpes9686
    @equesvulpes9686 4 года назад +1

    the problem with trying to be ecologic is that what people think is ecologic is not.
    electric cars pollute more than gas cars. example: the lithium mines in africa that provide electric car manufacturer don't have regulation on how much pollution they are allowed to do. they don't care about ecology. another point is that electric cars often use energy from petrol or coal powerplant. using a gas car that was built in the usa that has ecological regulations actually pollute less.
    plastic makes less carbon than paper, but only if recycled properly. making sure that people recycle their plastic after washing it would be a better solution than just putting a trash can. you could make a deposit when people buy a single use plastic case like they do with alluminum cans.

    This is not brutally honest but full of greenwashing itself. You can't say plastic spoons are universally evil and recycling showers are universally good unless you've done a proper lifecycle analysis for each specific use case. Nobody cares to do that as long as they can use either to greenwash the s*it out of their customers.

    And sorry, as far as tourism is concerned, the only way to sustainability is less tourism (or those sailing cruise ships you mention).

    Cringe... Plastics are arguably better at preventing climate change (at the moment) compared to alternatives. Say some cardboard boxs that are only slightly better than plastics in GHG emissions under generous assumptions about where they got their papers and they cause more problems pricesely because they are degradable... As in, if they end up in a not modern enough landfills they will release methane gas as they degrade and all the GHG benefit calculations goes out the window and paper becomes so much more damaging to the climate than anything else.
    The problem you might be contributing in solving would be the ocean plastic pollution, but less than a percent of plastic waste is mismanaged in wealthy countries and at least in many cases I've looked into and ran the numbers (for example Geami) you're actually better off paying people who clean up ocean plastic waste directly (or donate it to better waste management in indonesia etc) instead of spending it on plastic alternatives in your wealthy country's regulated businesses, which are sometimes 2 or more times expensive than just using plastics.
    Plastics look bad to you and makes you feel bad, so people try to get rid of it. But there's surprisingly little evidence that changing it to available alternatives will actually help the planet. The (mostly paper) container alternatives are... even when they are not just flat out counterproductive, still too unscalable or expensive enough to honestly say they can be the solution. And what if we get a truly carbon neutral synthethic or bio crude oil alternatives by then? It will solve both aviation fuel and plastic raw resource extraction problem and the problem will be just making fishing industries and waste management systems in poor countries who are responsible for mismanaging plastic waste in a scale that matters.
    Do better research. Cynicism only gets you so far.
