Role of a Cookstove in Family Life | Slow Living

  • Pull up a chair, and join our family as we spend a cosy weekend at my brother's home: two days of warmth and fire, cast-iron cooking, slow family time and lots of delicious food, all around 'The Heart of the Home': one of our Homewood Heritage stoves. This was filmed in mid-2020 (if you are wondering why the children look younger!), during the New Zealand winter. At the time, I was planning to create a bunch of useful videos about our stoves out of it all: the best way to light a fire/how to maintain and care for a stove/how to best run it for baking - that sort of thing, but unfortunately some sound recording issues made it unfit for purpose, and I have been sitting on the footage ever since, wondering what to do with it.
    This video is the end result, with me deciding to use the salvaged footage as backdrop to an extended voiceover that tries to communicate the very special nature of a cast iron wood range and the positive influence it can have in cultivating a more intentional and grounded home life. It is an attempt to explain something that really is much better experienced first-hand: that extra something that sparks into life as match touches paper, warmth fills the room, and elevates this kitchen appliance to a status higher than mere "thing".
    I hope you enjoy.
    Some things from the video that you may be interested in:
    🎶 The song that starts at 4:06 is "Girl with the Golden Hair" written and sung by David (my father/grandfather to the children) who you can meet in other of our videos.
    🎯 The disc flicking game seen at the beginning then again at 2:50 is 'Crokinole', a game from the 1800s, originating within the Amish and Mennonite communities of Ontario, Canada (this particular board handcrafted by me! Makes a great wood-working project, for anyone so inclined); can see more of this game in our video specifically about board gaming: • Board Games by the Fir...
    👩‍🌾 The farming game at 10:39 that Zelda, Janie and I are playing is 'Agricola: Family Edition', a modern board game that Zelda really enjoys [if I was smarter about this, I'd have an Amazon-affiliate link for you here!]
    🍳 A bunch of the cooking seen we will get around to covering with more instructional-style videos in the future (certainly Janie's sourdough, and the skillet cookie, and I'm sure we'll do proper preserving/marmalade/etc videos in the future too).
    🔥 This stove is our Homewood Heritage model, the original and most popular of the stoves that our family business builds - can learn more about this kitchen range by visiting our profile, or watching earlier of our videos.

    The home stove is much more than a mere stove
    Caught in it's warm gliow are the faces of a very close knit and contented family, which is giving proud continuity to the solid values of a simple lifestyle. Grandfather's lilting voice lends rich resonance to this video. The stove not only provides wholesome , nourishing food but also enriches the soul , as it makes a lovely family understand the true meaning of togetherness. Thank you for this beautiful video.

We are building a last house for ourselves, calling it the "one we will retire in", and our central item in the kitchen will be a wood cook stove, similar to what you have. We always had a woodstove, but primarily for heating. This time I want to cook and bake on it/in it. As a life long bread baker I can't wait what the first loaf of bread out of that stove will taste like. Thank you again. One czech/american grandma.

    If anyone ever had any doubt about adding a wood fired stove to their home then this film would wash those doubts away. I have watched all the homewood videos and though I love them all I think this is my absolute favourite. The words spoken tell of a time past, but that time can actually be had again.

    I agree! This stove is not just a stove, its the Heart of your home! And I experience that everytime i watch one of your videos! I wish I could afford one of those stoves! They are beautiful, and are very much so needed in these days of uncertainty. Where I live, I never know when the power is going to go out. I do have a generator that powers my entire house if needed, I have a wood stove for heat, and I could cook on it if need be. But not bake! I am very impressed with your natural lifestyle! I have my own garden, and land. I love living in the mountains away from the city. I also live pretty much natural style of living! Thank you for sharing your beautiful family and your love lifestyle. I enjoy the singing of your parents! I to am a singer and play the guitar. Agree with your discussion on losing our connection with nature, fire and food (real food). I can remember going to England to see my Nan when I was little and she had a woodstove. I would wake up to this glorious aroma of wood burning and the warmth it gave the house. Walking towards the kitchen I would be greeted with a mug of Horlicks and would proceed to sit on the high stool watching her cook on the woodstove. Her kitchen was my favorite place and I've never forgotten about her woodstove and have always wanted one.

    "Simply sitting in front of the fire has the power to send you back to a less complicated time"
    This sentence is so powerful, our time seems easier with all the technology that ''helps'' but in reality it's very complicated.

    • @homewoodstoves
      @homewoodstoves  3 года назад +2

      Technology is very much a double-edged sword... 😢

    • @robertomurri1278
      @robertomurri1278 3 года назад +1

      Nothing wrong with improvements. Just depends on what suits ones lifestyle, or how it can benefit. I see comments saying this is the life, technology has taken away. I think...no wait. In my opinion the ppl that say that are either depressed with their life, or have not made an effort to improve their life. I have a great time with my family! Home cooked meals, movies on my dads theater room, no swimming pool, but we don't mind that.

    • @homewoodstoves
      @homewoodstoves  3 года назад +4

      @@robertomurri1278 Sure, and I don't think anyone is denying that modern technologies have brought about benefits: the wonder of instant communication, or ease of transportation, or whatever - but every new convenient technology comes with a cost, and I am not convinced that our species is wired very well to manage them, or done that cost/benefit analysis with any intentionality. So for example smartphones are obviously a technological marvel, incredible and amazing for easily looking up anything, or contacting with anyone instantly anywhere in the world... But when that interaction increasingly starts to comes at the expense of the book on the shelf, or the person in front of you, or the opportunity to get outside and do something, or that looking up becomes a crutch that pacifies us and stops us from striving to achieve what we want in our own lives or in the real world, or the social interactions start to turn into false/performative, feel-good dopamine hits (most of social media - and my biggest worry about YT), and the technology that is supposed to be bringing us together instead atomises and socially isolates us, I can very strongly empathise with the people that just wish they'd never been invented. But I mean, I build old-fashioned cast-iron cooking stoves, so... 😂

    • @kameliasali9639
      @kameliasali9639 3 года назад +2

      @@robertomurri1278 i agree with the two states you mentioned, but i think things would be much interesting if we had more direct touch with them, for instance the cookstove in this video, it seems just like a cooking tool, but actually it represents family, enjoyement, passion and so many beautiful vibes that can't be felt with a microwave lol, i've read somewhere that nowdays man can do anything until electricity cuts off, and that's so true.

  • @E_Proxy
    @E_Proxy 2 года назад +1

    1) the moment I saw the kids playing with the catdoor I've started thriving to see a kittykat and I was not disappointed.
    2) it is astonishing to me how similar the house atmosphere, your stories and the family-stove setting in New Zealand is to family-life in rural Italy until the 50's-60's. Truly unbelievable how a properly tamed fire brings people and nature together. No wonder why our ancestors used to divinize things like that.
    Things probably were similar around the world but not because of fashion and "trends" as today. Just because that's what life is when you get to the core of it. I'm 30 and, as the 99% of people that is now 50 or younger I did not have an inch of life toughness as it was back in the days so it might be easy to say for me but, as hard as it was just to survive, I'm pretty sure we just tossed away the real "connection" within us and between us and life itself and our psyche is paying the price. We could fake we're made to work on excel sheets and have happy hours all we want but it is just against our nature our bodies feel that. And will always do.
    I don't know if any of the above makes sense in English. I'm not a native English speaker, have had vertigos for the past week and am just really sad and melancholic.
    Fell asleep on my couch, in my kitchen/living room, alone, 4-500 kms away from my dad, mum, brother, friends, 101 grandma,... And just dreamt I was trying to sell my newly bought house and have a country house.

    • @homewoodstoves
