- Kelly Bires may be a random driver in NASCAR 08 but in the mid to late 2000's he was one of the sport's intriguing prospects. Jr Motorsports thought he was a can't-miss but bailed soon after.

@@LessGo7921I have to agree. He doesn't seem like a bust. He showed good potential but wasn't given the opportunity to compete. Had a good start to his career with the wood brothers in 08, then in 09 he lost his ride and was hopping from team to team and having a better season than he did in a full time ride to then be given the opportunity to race for a top team in 2010 only to get cut less than 10 races until the season. He didn't put up atrocious finishes at all, he was just dealt a shit hand. Not really a bust imo

@@queenautumnween2796 Something tells me there's something more there. Something like he slept with someone's wife or something else personal like that. It may have been as simple as he didn't get along with someone big on the team. But Junior's excuse as to why they let him go said practically nothing. And that usually means there's something behind the scenes we don't know.

Bires will mostly be known nowadays who unintentionally put the gears into motion for Brad Keselowski's rise to stardom.
And also got Bad Brad his only Xfinity Xfinity Championship.
I remember NASCAR 09 and I cheered Kelly Bires in 2010. While it's sad that he never got a chance to show his skills on the track, it's good to see that he's still in racing.
He did get chances. He didn’t make the most of them

Numerous races I thought he was going to break out into a stretch of top 5 /top ten finishes. He didn’t.

I remember Bires tried to qualify for the 2009 Daytona 500. If I remember correctly, he was filling in for Dexter Bean because NASCAR told Bean that he didn't have enough superspeedway experience, so the team called on Bires to get them into the show. The car was.......not fast.
I find that a bit hard to believe, since he had already raced in ARCA for several years, including Daytona and Talladega, and had already scored a few top-10s in those races.

@@stosh5082 I don't know. Maybe it was an experience thing. His only upper-tier NASCAR experience before that was a single Busch Series start at Memphis, so they probably wanted more than that.

He'd basically be Michael Annett if he was driving for JRM in the 2020s. Not bad, but not great.

8:47 I had no idea that was Kelly Bires' own racing equipment being driven by Ty Majeski. I was at that race actually, and I assumed anything that Ty Majeski drove at Golden Sands Speedway was his.
You really sweat the details on every video you make, Black Flags Matter. This really means to a huge Ty Majeski fan.
I think 2 things stunted Kelly Bires. That was peak Buschwhacking and the Open Wheel Invasion. Most teams were wanting Cup Series stars or former IndyCar drivers. 2 things that really screwed up the ladder system for a while. Especially the Buschwhacking
It hurts knowing the only driver from my hometown to make it into nascar was know as a bust....😢😢😢
He had talent and if it weren't for the bad luck at JR Motorsports, I feel like he could have developed into a Cup Series driver.

So my father used to work for JTG and later JRM and there were a lot of behind the scenes stuff that led to his demise but calling him a bust is out of line. I can tell that this creator is just a fan who has no idea what is going on behind closed doors.

@@Denverbroncos87well Trevor Bayne was a bust in RFK in Cup but not in the Wood Bros which got him a Daytona 500 win, and was unfortunately sidelined because of MS. That’s not a bust, like Steve Parks (which started a “Not a bust” video series)
Look, Dale Earnhardt Jr might have been successful in developing drivers: Martin Truex Jr, Brad Keselowski, Chase Elliott, William Byron, Noah Gragson, Josh Berry

Colin is such a weird one; obviously was competent in trucks but struggled a little bit in Roush, right at that time when Roush was starting to bleed sponsors for the second time.
Honestly put Erik Darnell in the same category. At least Colin sometimes got the call up from Roush again, though for some reason that nobody will ever be able to satisfyingly explain to me, nowhere near as much as Billy Johnson did.
@@LessGo7921 Stenhouse was just as bad as Braun during their time together. It wasn't until the next year, after Braun was out, when Stenhouse started to get it together.

Like these ideas although I don’t know if I would call Jeff Green; Mike Skinner; or even Regan Smith busts. Mike Skinner was a regular championship contender in Trucks and had solid success in Xfinity/Busch series. Even in Cup he had his moments. Sadly he had the worse luck at times like Atlanta in 2000. He did win the Japan races and a few duals even though they weren’t point races. Jeff Green won the 2000 Xfinity/Busch title and was a dominate figure there in early 2000s. Although after being fired from RCR mid season in 2003 I think he fell off bc he couldn’t get a quality ride. He really should had kept his mouth shut at Richmond. Regan Smith won races and was a regular title contender every year he ran for JRM. He even did a solid job at Furniture Row in late 2000s and early 2010s. He got the 78 car a Darlington win in 2011 and should had won for DEI in the 2008 Fall Talladega race but was wrongfully black flagged. If you and I have different criteria on what makes a bust that’s cool. Just saying my personal view.
I literally only remember him in the 47 car for Wood/JTG and Start and Parking the 47 in 2009 after funds dried up on Michael McDowell
Maybe it’s just my bias as a Bires fan but I think his dismissal from JRM had more to do with Buschwhacking than performance but that was the nature of the series back then. Bires was just 1 name on a long list of talented drivers hurt by the era they were in.
Yep just like drivers like Reed Sorenson Andy Lally, Stephen Leight and many others.

as someone who's raced against KBR equipment, kelly knows how to build a race car.
From 2007 to 2012, there were many drivers (Current and Former Cup and Nationwide Drivers) that were either "Buschwhacking" or thrived in the lower series around the same time that Bires debuted.
These are just some of the many, many drivers (Who made one or more starts in the five-year period): Carl Edwards, David Reutimann, Clint Bowyer, Jason Leffler (R.I.P.), Kevin Harvick, David Ragan, Marcos Ambrose, Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin, Scott Wimmer, Stephen Leicht, Kyle Busch, J.J. Yeley, Casey Mears, Jamie McMurray, Kasey Kahne, Bobby Labonte, Aric Almirola, Regan Smith, Tony Stewart, Juan Pablo Montoya, Paul Menard, Ryan Newman, Brian Vickers, Mark Martin, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Martin Truex Jr.
While these drivers showed up and dominated in the second-half of 2000s and the early-2010s to make names for themselves, Bires just couldn't keep up.
He was in a period where Cup Series regulars were coming and "Bushwhacking" almost every week, or younger drivers with more experience (late models, super-late models, legends cars, the Whelen Modified Series, the ARCA Series and the Nascar Truck Series).

In 88 Starts, Kelly Bires has 0 Wins, 3 Top 5s, 13 Top 10s, 0 Poles, 32 Lead Lap Finishes, Led 14 of 13360 Laps Ran, 27 DNFs, An Average Start of 21.5, An Average Finish of 23.3, An Average Points Finish of 37th, and A Best Points Finish of 13th (2008).
I first knew about Kelly Bires thanks to NASCAR 09, so i am not going to fake it like I was fan, but I wish he would have stayed in NASCAR. Good to know he is still racing.

I feel like calling Kelly Bires a bust is a little harsh. I put a lot of the blame on Dale Junior and the Eury's for being so incredibly shortsighted and a little stuck in their ways. The reality was the team badly needed money and Kelly couldn't bring any so he was dropped. His results weren't horrible and he could have been an awesome Xfinity driver. Not to be! I actually completely forgot he ran for Joe Gibbs Racing!
And there was money cough cough I mean CHEMISTRY with Danica in the 7 car!!!! I'd love to hear the inside story about the whole Jr motorsports situation. the juicy details are probably gold.

I will definitely be the one to say that, there was definitely not chemistry between Tony Eury Jr and him.... and that no. 88 JRM Nationwide/Xfinity team has never been the same ever since, at least I'd be willing to argue..... nonetheless... great work, I definitely enjoyed the video!

I would say he is better than you think he was pretty consistent as he raced in every race from 08-19 with an average start and finish around 20th
He was the classic 'safe pair of hands'. Rarely wrecked but was rarely Top 5. Only 1 Top 15 points finish but he did win the Brickyard. I'd say not a bust but maybe a slight underachiever considering he was at a quality team (RCR).
