Absolute throwback to leaving school, haven't heard this song in years until greatest hits radio played it. The sax player is just awesome, jazz funk at its best
Absolutely LOVE this!! These guys are bad ass musicians!!! Mezzoforte tore it up big time!!! It takes excellent musicians to do a cut like this...WELL DONE Mezzoforte!! One of my favourites!!! *dancing*
heard it on radio before but not much and on you tube but not seen it like this played live like this one of the best instrumental songs of the 20 centenary
..a ton of memories stick to that tune. it had us jumping all summer 1983 when this tune was released in 1983. and those guys have not lost a bit of their funkyness. EPIC!!
I had Mezzo Forte records when I was 15/16. I am 50 now and have just found them among all my other vinyl in my Sisters garage. Happy days. I just need to buy a record deck.
I have commented on this vid before but everytime I watch it I marvel at the genius of these guys. What brilliant musicians and they obviously love what they are doing. Just brilliant
I watched them yesterday evening playing in Jaén (Andalusia, southern Spain). They're lovely because you notice they enjoy their work. They're very very very good!!!
OMG! This was how music used to be played! By musicians who KNOW their stuff! I have often wondered what happened to Mezzoforte? Now I KNOW! Phew!! Thanks for this upload, Andrewboy!!
Just got to appreciate thiz All these musicians on one platform playing together with all there divers backgrounds and schooling and hardships they went through just be on that stage together 1 word: AWESOME! Thanks. and Thank You. not even a CD and still sounds amazing if not better cause it live. :)
Para mim é a melhor banda de fusão de todos os tempos!!! devo ser o Português fan nº1...e já lá vão muitos anos que acompanho a evolução destes senhores...
Just come across this. Fantastic stuff from a great band and brought back some memories. I ordered 2 vinyl albums from Steinar records which was Mezzoforte record company. I had both albums shipped to the U.K one was Sprellifandi (live) and the other was Rising both Icelandic copies. I must hook these out and play them again
Wow-yeah! These were the guys that got me into jazz funk and playing the bass. They sound better now then they did in the 80's!! How laid back does Johann Asmundsson look playing his bass? Steve Wright (DJ on Radio 1 then) used ‘Surprise’ as the background music for his program links in the early 80’s which is where I first heard it and got hooked on the music style.
my first ever 12 inch by them fantastic band . so many flavours this band brings , listen from sama to africa latin just one wholesome tribe . credit , to them all funk on , sorry miss spell samba
Not bad for a group of session musicians from Iceland, the Album Surprise Surprise is a fantastic collection of songs, well worth getting, if you still can.
From all the late 70s, early 80s european "pop" jazz-fusion bands, such as Average White Band, Level 42 or Shakatak, which I all admire as well, this definitely is the tightest band with the most memorable melodies. Just musicianship at its finest!!!!
We need this in 2015 and forward :-)"There are no exact guidelines. There are probably no guidelines at all. The only thing I can recommend at this stage is a sense of humor, an ability to see things in their ridiculous and absurd dimensions, to laugh at others and at ourselves, a sense of irony regarding everything that calls out for parody in this world. In other words, I can only recommend perspective and distance. Awareness of all the most dangerous kinds of vanity, both in others and in ourselves. A good mind. A modest certainty about the meaning of things. Gratitude for the gift of life and the courage to take responsibility for it. Vigilance of spirit." (Havel upon receiving the Open Society Prize awarded by the Central European University in 1999, tr. Paul Wilson)
@Lupi78 Joi is in my opinion the best bass player of all time here in Iceland, I've had the pleasure of meeting him and even playing with him.... a true musician.
this is pretty much same version of original recording, correct? there is a part that was not recorded though.. I know piano solo on surprise surprise is perfectly same! I cried ! Thanks for upload this!!!
it is live :) the album sounds diffrent from this it also doesnt have the Drum solo part like they play on stage and on the album the Saxophone and Trumpet ends in a duét like ending taking turns to play :)
There are a number of very good musicians who have to try to capture a very idiosyncratic saxophone a tempo musician. The man on the sax is not bad, but his tempi are very idiosyncratic. The sax is sometimes too early, sometimes too late. Otherwise an absolute listening pleasure.
After 40 years ago...its still awesome...my childhood song..👍👍

Forever in my ears - since 1983 !
A fantastic tune just gets better 😊
My band used to play this song in the late 80's and it never failed to get people on the dance floor, everytime. And this was a Jazz club.
Just brilliant, all so tight together, never tire of listening to this
OMG! this is awesome. brings back so many memories of how great music back in the 80s was!
"This is a brilliant, happy jazz funk Chhooonn!!!! It use to and still does put a smile on my face whilst dancing to this melancholy melody!!!!"
This is sooooo great! Know this song from my youth, one of my favorites, but never saw the group. First time now, really impressed!

A superb live performance by a really top class act.
Great musicians! Especially the bassplayer.

This was the theme tune to a TV programme in the UK in the 80's, but for the life of me can I think what it was!!!

Talent is not a big enough word to describe this. Talentissimo ! Hope I have nor just sworn at anyone....lol
The title is the one that shot Mezzoforte through the Stratosphere! An amazing number, can only be played by Mezzorte and no one else
