I tried this recipe and it turned out fantastic. I used 1 cup whole wheat flour and 1 cup regular flour, and let it knead in my stand mixer for about 7-8 minutes. the only other adjustment I will make in the future is a bit less salt. Thanks so much!
I just made these and made Italian subs out of two of them. I used bread flour and regular vegetable oil because I never heard of refined oil and that specific flour that’s listed. These rolls were a success. Thumbs up. I’ve made many other recipes on RUclips of sun rolls. Some were not even edible. This recipe here was so far the best one I’ve made.
Vegetable oil is one of the refined oils. They use hexane as a solvent to pull more oils out, then get rid of the hexane. Its really bad for you and belongs in the garbage.
Absolutely Delicious!!! I made these with my kids today. I doubled the recipe, added a tad more flour and used active yeast which I proofed with water out of the recipe and 2 teaspoons of sugar (not out of the recipe ingredients) I kneaded the dough for 10 mins by hand, let it rise 3 hours. The kids helped roll them out so they were quite characteristic 😂 after rolling I let them rise in the pan for another 40 mins before brushing them with the milk and baking for 30 mins. Flavor and texture were amazing!!! Thank you!!!
If you use all the water in the recipe you'll end up with a 100% hydration dough, which is a sticky goo. Using some bakers math: 2 cups of flour is about 240 grams and 1/2 cup milk is about 120 grams. This will give you a 50% hydration dough, which is ok for bagels, but a bit too tough for subway buns. After mixing the dough with milk, I'd recommend adding 1 tablespoon of water at a time until the dough is soft and pliable. About 2 tablespoons of water will give you a roughly 60% hydration dough which is good for this type of bread. If you started making the dough with this recipe and used all of the milk and water, and ended up with a sticky goo. Don't panic! Just add an extra cup flour, and things should start looking much better
3 yrs late lol but just made these , not only are they soòoo easy to make they were the best sub buns I've ever had!! Nice chewy on the outside and soft fluffy on the inside,,,will make tons more times thanks....
I made this, and it really calls for 3 CUPS of flour. I started with 2 cups, as shown, and the dough was soup. I added flour to get to the right consistency, and that was about another 1 cup. I would start with 2.5 cups, and gradually add flour by the spoonful, until it's right. BUT - the rolls were exactly what I was looking for! Just like Subway. I'm saving this recipe for all of my sub sandwiches in the future. Thanks!
@deliciousgroove, I didn’t try these yet, but I’m a home bread baker, and 1 cup of liquid to 2 cups of flour is not right, unless maybe making a no knead dough that ferments overnight, but this isn’t the case.
Yes, the mixture was so wet that I ended up kneading for an hour! Maybe the instructions should be edited. I don’t want someone to make the same mistake
I'm confused because in the video she only uses 1/2 cup warm milk but the description box recipe calls for 1/2 cup warm water AND 1/2 cup warm milk. Should I just follow the video?
Glad I wasn't the only one. I used all-purpose flour to see if it would work just as well because that is all I had. It is rising now. I hope it isn't going to be a flop!
Looks like dinner to me. My daughter asked me to make chicken cheese steak for dinner and I only make round rolls, like brioche and kieser so I was looking for sub rolls. Thank you so much.
Just made this and it was delicious and really soft, I made a mistake and used all milk instead of half milk and water but I didn't add any additional flour but I did use bread flour and it came out really good, loafs weren't as big but maybe I need to let it rest more or just make 3 instead of 4 forgot to mention I also used 2% milk

Yeast is a living organism that need 2things to work 1.Food(aka sugar or salt/similar things) 2.Warmth When yeast breaths it rises the dough and makes those small air bubbles So no salt absolutely WONT kill your yeast
A few things to remember : 1. What happens if you add salt to yeast? Salt has a retarding effect on the activity of the yeast. In the presence of salt, the yeast releases some of its water to the salt by osmosis, and this in turn slows the yeast's fermentation or reproductive activities. 2. Does salt affect yeast rising? Salt does retard yeast growth, and in concentrations that are too high, it can indeed kill the yeast. ... If you ever make a dough without salt, you'll notice a lot more, and faster, rise and after baking, you'll see large, irregular holes in the bread where the yeast just got carried away. 3. Should you add salt to yeast? Salt acts as a yeast inhibitor, which means that it slows down the growth and reproduction of yeast in your bread dough. Without salt present to rein in its activity, the yeast will go wild eating all of the sugar available in the dough from enzymatic activity, like an overactive Pac-Man machine 4.Can you mix salt and yeast together? Because in direct contact, salt can kill the yeast. And then, right from the start, there will be no chance that your dough will rise. So, to avoid this error, get into the habit of always weighing out your yeast separately to your salt and adding them separately to the bowl.
Thank you so very much for the recipe , for your patience to answer all questions to help people to make it . I appreciate that. I will try it tomorrow .

I made this recipe with US cups/spoons (copying the recipe exactly) and the turned out perfect. The only differences I found: 1) My batch seemed quite smaller. I still divided the dough into 4 balls bc I was making them for BBQ chicken sandwiches but they turned out 1/2 the length they are shown in the video. 2) I took them out of the oven 5 minutes earlier, I’m guessing bc they were smaller.
