// ABOUT
Hi- I’m a mental health therapist, my name is Mallory and my pronouns are (she/hers). This channel is dedicated to helping YOU improve your mental health!
We know the rates of teens struggling with suicide and self harm are rising and I want to reverse that trend! My biggest hope is to increase mental health awareness and break the stigma of talking to a therapist so teens can get the help they deserve and need right here, right now.

Most welcome 😊 So glad it was helpful Sofia!! What strategy are you going to try first?
Mallory Grimste, LCSW - Teen Therapist honestly I’m just trying to talk more about it kind of been something I’ve been suppressing so talking to my parents about is going to be super helpful for the both of us
Sofia’s Small world - I love that!!!! Let me know how it goes and if you get stuck with anything along the way you’d like more info about 💛💛💛
Mallory Grimste, LCSW - Teen Therapist I just realize something you’re basically saying not to deal with the separation like when you try to lose weight you just don’t go from eating pizza every single day to only eating salads and running 5 miles I just like the thought of this and it makes it a lot easier to understand
Its exhausting to feel this way, I have this with my mom and everytime she'd go away for a few days for business trips I would literally be crippled with anxiety, and my mind would NOT stop with negative thoughts 😭
Yikes! Negative thoughts and anxiety tend to go hand in hand which can make it quite the struggle! Have you tried the strategies in this video fro crushing automatic negative thoughts? ruclips.net/video/FsXhGsZsxVA/видео.html
Yes me too when i was little my mom would go on business trips all the time and after getting diagnosed with separation anxiety tried not to go to as many trips and know I am on vacation with my grandma without my mom or dad and it’s the worst thing ever and we are gonna be here for 10 days (5 days left) and I literally have a countdown but not with days with HOURS it’s literally exhausting and they think it’s nothing
Sending you virtual care 💕 you got this! Hoping these strategies help you enjoy some nuggets of fun your last few days with your grandparents
@@mallorygrimste I am having fun mostly when I am occupied but I still can’t stop thinking about it I know they are my family but there are sometimes that I think of my parents
Me too. I searched for this because she went on a walk with the dog and none of us went with her this time and i feel like shes taking a long time and im trying not to freak out because im literally afraid i'll somehow manifest that something happened
So
hhahahah..
I have the worst separation anxiety. Personally, I'm not scared of anything happening to myself but I never let my family members do anything alone because I think they'll either get abducted or murdered. And when they are out alone I will have a panic attack, call them until they pick up, and just think of the worst. It has gotten to the point where my younger brother cries because I never let him do anything alone. I feel like I'm burdening my entire family and its the worst feeling ever
Ugh I’m so sorry you’re struggling with this- which strategies from this video are you going to try first?
@@mallorygrimste I really want to try the method where you have something that reminds you of the person. But knowing myself I would have a bigger panic attack if they were gone and I had a constant reminder of them and the possibility that something happened to them
Perhaps you can each have a reminder of each other?
This kind of reminds me of a ocd, fears of loved ones getting hurt if you aren’t there to protect them is a way ocd can manifest.
This is literally me 😭 I'm so sorry that you have to go though this, it's an awful feeling! Things WILL get better and remember that thoughts are just thoughts and not reality. Stay strong, you CAN do this 💪
I have separation anxiety.
It always kicks in whenever my partner goes away-
Tomorrow she might have to go away from me for a while, and the very thought of it has been absolutely killing me.
I usually puke, cry, shake a lot and some of those things all thanks to my fear. And yesterday everything got so concentrated that I almost wanted to scream, but I knew I couldn't.
I'm going through therapy right now, but honestly my psychologist doesn't help me that much, sometimes I feel like she puts more fear on me or even guilt.
I'm absolutely tired of feeling so ill everyday, and I'm terrified about tomorrow.
The worst thing is that I can't look for help in my parents because last time I did, they got really mad at me, and honestly I don't blame them. So right now, the only one I've got is one friend of mine.
So sorry you're struggling with this. Most psychologists would be open to hearing if what they think is helping you is actually making you feel worse. For the physical manifestations, I usually encourage using strategies where you self-soothe the physical responses while you're working on the source in therapy. I have an older video that is geared towards using self-soothing skills for self-harm, though these strategies can also be adapted to anxiety-induced physical struggles. You can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/tu6F6QIL6ww/видео.html
hey im here for you bro. i have separation anxiety and it is terrible. I can’t stay home alone. It makes me throw up, hyperventilate, panic.
My parents have never taken a trip without me and my sister. I struggle from anxiety and I cry everyday when they call to say hi. This really helps
So glad this video helped you 💛 with practice and reminding this stuff gets easier
My separation anxiety is so bad. Even the thought of leaving my grandparents or mom gives me so much panic. What if something happens and I can’t be there because I’m 18 hours away from them? I’ve tried almost everything to help and nothing is working.
That's a very solid concern- especially when you struggle with separation anxiety. If your self-help strategies aren't working, it could be helpful to link up with a mental health professional like a therapist who can guide you through your personal healing concerns. You got this!!
Thank you so much for this. I suffer with separation anxiety to specific people I'm attached to. My best friend (and person i like) has been off isolating for the past week and I only get to see him on Tuesday. I've gotten so bad to the point where I didn't go to school today and I'm struggling to do much in worry. This helped a lot
So glad this video was here for you when you needed it 💕
i have really bad separation anxiety to the point when my bf goes to sleep even if were on the phone i get sad and angry and i feel bad about it bc its probably annoying
Separation anxiety can feel exhausting. I hope you're connecting with someone to help you feel better!
@@mallorygrimste i can't my parents dont believe in mental health so i cant get help
bummer! Therapy is only one form of taking care of your mental health so hoping you can get support soon
I'm 16 and I've had anxiety since i was about 5 years old however my anxiety only started getting really bad a year ago. I'm not worried about myself, I'm worried about my family. I'm the oldest child and i always worry about my younger sister. She's the type to stay in and watch netflix however her friends are really active and invite her on active things that she doesn't sometimes want to go on however she isn't good at expressing her feelings so she just agrees and goes along with them. I'm so worried something will happen to her and i end up crying whenever she goes out and i always need to take a walk however she knows i have anxiety and doesn't like the fact i worry about her but it's not something i can just help! I don't know what to do
I love that you care so much for your sister. This would be a great thing to explore with your own therapist since it's so particular to your relationship.
Hi! I have been diagnosed with separation anxiety just last week. I don’t worry about death it’s more of being sad when I am separated from my mother.
Is that still separation anxiety? Thank you!
That can be a factor to separation anxiety, though I would discuss your particular concerns with the provider you're working with. They can explain and answer questions particular to your experience that we cant' really do over social media since they have a fuller picture of what's impacting your struggles.
Have you gotten over it yet?
If yes do you have any tips or advice you can share
Tmr I’m going on a trip and I have separation with my grandma and she isn’t going on the trip with me and I am going away for 4 days and I’m very scared by the thought about not being with her is making me very worried and makes me wanna cry
Hope these tips help you 💛
Im home schooled for a year because of extreme anxiety, my mum has always helped me out of them but im getting better and am going to school and im scared bc shes not going to be there to help me im in year 9 :(
You got this! Anything your mum is helping you with, see if you can adapt it for yourself. Also- this video has some great coping skills for anxiety: ruclips.net/video/KnziVPi-2JA/видео.html
Im 24 and i just realized i have separation anxiety 😭😭 upon reflection i realized its so obvious. Your not alone lets be brave together 😊
I am a young newlywed (no longer a teen but I was 19 when we got married) and struggle a lot with being separated from my husband, especially if I have to go to sleep when he’s not home (his current job sometimes requires he stays late into the night) so this was really helpful. Thank you ❤️
So glad this was helpful! While my content is shared from the perspective of working with teens, these tips help us even into adulthood too :) I just responded to your comment on tonight’s LIVE call.

I’m a grown ass man, very handsome with a beach body year round, yet i have separation issues. I say this because YOU ARE NOT alone in this struggle.
Thank you for this vid. I'm 17 but I still get seperation anxiety when I'm seperate from my grandparents. They've raised me and we're really close. It's not always overwhelming anxiety but I still worry that they will die or something else will happen that will keep me from ever seeing them ever again.
Thank you for your comment - I hope these strategies help. There's a new Separation Anxiety video in the works coming soon so stay tuned and turn those notifications on 😊
I have separation anxiety from being apart from everybody or just being alone, especially when I’m out at my beach house I always have thoughts my parents will leave even though they have never left me alone or anything when I was younger. Every time I wait for my mum at the petrol station or to go to the bathroom at the mall I’m always having a panic attack and I’ve had this for my whole life
I hope these strategies can help you through this struggle. Which one are you going to try first?
Thank you so much for this video it’s very reassuring ❤️
So glad you found it valuable
Thank you for sharing this video really made me feel less alone in my feelings ! My moms going away for a week and I used to have serious separation anxiety from her about 2 years ago and went to a psychiatrist and had therapy. I now just have normal separation anxiety from her, for example: I can go hours without her but it gets harder when I’m not with her at night or for a couple of days.. how can I lessen the attachment without lessening our relationship??
I'm so glad this video helped you feel less alone- this is wayyyy more common than people realize and I was SHOCKED at the lack of videos out there for human beings 🤷♀️ Sounds like you're on the right track working with a supportive team- a lot of this takes time and gentle practice. You're doing great!!
I'm not sure if i'm suffering from mild seperation anxiety. Everytime i would go on a trip, i would miss my parents and cry a lot. I didn't think much about this when i was in 3th grade, but now i'm in 8th grade and it's still going on. I would also feel an immense amount of homesickness and anxiety.
Thank you for this video. My younger brother has really bad separation anxiety and starts crying whenever my mom leaves for a work trip. I’m trying to be the brave older sister but it’s really hard because my mom spends a lot of time with him before trips and I’m always pushed to the side so I don’t get the same goodbye that my brother does. This video helped me see his perspective, think of ways I could help him, and also calmed some of my own anxiousness about my mom leaving
what a great sister you are! love that this is helping!!
thank you so much for doing this
Absoultely! Glad you found it helpful. Please let me know if you still have concerns or questions. I'll likely do a follow-up on this at some point.
@@mallorygrimste How about dealing with anxiety tics?
That’s a great idea though anxiety tics are generally better treated by a neurologist or a psychiatrist since there’s often a physical component to them that needs to be addressed too
Thank you for this
My pleasure! :)
Just the sentence you said of "progress tends to be spiral, not linear" made me feel a lot better. Cause there are times when I'll be doing good with my anxiety and then I'll have a really bad moment all of a sudden and it makes me frustrated and overwhelmed like I'm back at square one. But I have to remember that recovery from an anxiety disorder takes time and there's nothing wrong with having setbacks every now and then.
YES!!! I remember the first time I heard that concept, too and it was a HUGE game-changer moment for me, too. Thanks for sharing your experience!!
Thank you so much! Every time i'm alone i'm always worried about mine and other's safety.
So glad you found this video and hope the tips help! 💕
Thank you so much for this video!!! I have always struggled with anxiety but because of the pandemic, its gotten a lot worse. Since i was young i never wanted to be separated from my mum but i thought that was normal. It was only recently after the pandemic started that i realised i hated the idea about being away from my mum. I could handle a few hours fine as long as i knew she was comming back. But she is going away in 2 months for a 2 week holiday with my Dad and i have been dreading it for months. The overwhelming fear that something is going to happen is crippling and exhausting and i wish the flow of negative thoughts would end. I feel like i am being a burden to her by going on about how i don't want her to go. I feel like it has finally got to a point where i should reach out to a professional for help but I'm so scared as i have always dealt with my issues alone. I am going to try some of these techniques to help, the leaf floating down the river seems most effective to me. Any advice would be really helpful about my situation, thank you again!! ❤
SO glad these strategies are helpful. If you're looking for how to find a good therapist, I made this video last year, but the info still applies to 2022. Hope it helps: ruclips.net/video/mXLiGXZPkoI/видео.html
Thank you thank you thank... gonna find myself a object to hold on to
That’s awesome!!! Hope you found one that works for you 💛
Thank you so much it helped a lot
Glad it helped 🌸
I feel like if I say my thought in a funny way, I’ll just start making fun of myself 😂
That’s great that you know that about yourself already so you can adjust to a different strategy
Great video. Not a dog, not a child, not aa teen either, but I'm still facing separation anxiety from my two dogs on upcoming trips. My mom will house sit and watch them, but I've still had a tough time relaxing. The tips helped quite a bit, thank you
As a fellow dog parent, I feel this! Hopefully your Mom can send you lots of pics of the pups while they're dogsitting.
I have this with my mum every time she leaves the house just or a few hours and my brothers are here I start crying and want her home immediately
thank you so much for sharing. I actually featured your comment in this week's video where I responded to your comments :) you can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/tulqC7rwAuw/видео.html

I'm 13 and my mom travels a lot and I always cry when she is gone because I miss her so much. I feel so alone in seperation anxiety because I don't know anyone else with it.
I hope this video and the people in the comments have assured you that you are not alone and there are strategies to help with the anxiety. You got this!! 💛
Thank you so much! I’m currently on a 5 day trip without my parents and I have some terrible separation anxiety. I wanted to figure out of how I can fix it when I get back home.
That's a bummer to be struggling with this when you're away- I hope these strategies help ease the anxiety until you return
thank you so much! I have really bad seperarion anxiety & i have a counselor who i see at school everyday & ive gotton really attatched to & i just had an anxiety attack because im not going to school today & i dont want her to like forget about me or me get replaced with another one of her clients; hopefully this video helps
I hope these strategies help!
im not diagnosed, but I do struggle with separation anxiety with my cousin a lot. We’re rlly close, he’s like my older brother, and i just feel like he’ll forget abt me. this helped.
I am so glad this helped :) love knowing these videos are making the impact I hope for
thank you for making this video, it really helped me a lot. ever since i was young i was cry so much before my mom left for a trip and i wasn’t going with her. she also has a job that has her working late, and i would cry if she wasn’t home by the time i went to bed. she is now going on another trip and i’m freaking out because that means it will just be me and my dad. any tips on what could make this better?
So glad you found this and it’s helping. Keep practicing these new mindsets and strategies and it will get easier over time. PS- can you remove your age? We don’t want young people being targeted on here 💕
okay! i will keep trying
Hello thank you for making this, is there a separation anxiety sleep meditation with comforting phrases that you can make please?
that's a great idea! In the meantime, you might want to try the LovingKindness Meditation here: ruclips.net/video/36LaRhCIm6g/видео.html
I'm going on a short trip to stay with some family friends 1 night and staying in a motel with just my mum the other 2 nights. My whole family plus some family friends are coming on this trip but I still have really bad anxiety and I don't know why. (This also happens when I go on other camps/sleepovers when I'm without my family. ) Is this separation anxiety? Will the tips from this video work?
These strategies can totally help. You'll likely still feel anxious (remember anxiety is a good thing- it's just tried to warn you that something different is happening), but it can get you through the intense parts so you can enjoy your trip, too. The more you do this, the less anxious you'll feel because it won't feel so different and new each time. You got this Casey!!
I have this I moved to a different country for education and feel very low every day thinking about my mom and dad and my cats
sending you lots of positive thoughts! I hope this video helps you with missing them while you're temporarily away for your education
I’m going through this right now, my mum is going on a trip for two weeks tomorrow and I feel no nervous, I know she will have a good time but I can’t help to feel like something bad will happen and I’m anticipating the feeling of missing her
Sending you lots of digital love- you got this!!
how come i have the kind of separation anxiety that usually just little kids struggle with like feeling unsafe and alone without my attachment figure? (who isn't even one of my parents)
great question- hard to answer specifically without a full clinical assessment, though some common reasons may be because of past experiences with loss, a general anxiety condition, or being a deep feeler and therefor a deep connector.
i have this with my mom. my mother is going for a job interview tomorrow and im freaking out. im so upset i dont know how to cope. i even wanna work with her if she goes to work. its so hard. im 19 years old and im very embarrassed of this at 19 years old.
No need to be embarrassed but I get it. Let us know how these strategies work out for you. It will take time but you got this!!
I dont worry about something happening to me or my mom but whenever i go to like a summer camp for a few days and i just think about my parents i literally start crying. First i tought it was normal but now im going to be 15 and it didnt go away. Now im not sure is that separation anxiety or something else. Thank you
Bummer you’re experiencing this- I hope these strategies help you out! Which one will you try first?
Please help me. I don’t have bad thoughts but I’m scared of missing that person. I get really really sick. Stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting. It just suddenly explodes on me. I want to deal with it so I won’t get so terribly sick
Have you tried the TIPP skills? They help re-regulate our physical responses quickly so we can get in control of our emotional and thinking responses easier. You can check out a video I made about these skills here: ruclips.net/video/SS7jT-3lam4/видео.html
I'm older but still get this with my parents and partner.
yup- separation anxiety ain't just for toddlers and dogs. glad you found this video
Thankyou so much this helped me so much I have to sleep at a friends house in 3 days
I am so glad!!! How did it go? I love that you’re coping ahead by getting some strategies in place ahead of time. You rock!!!
In my “case” I feel like it’s a little different. So for example, when me and my cousins are staying over at each others house for the night then next day (the time they or we have to leave) I ALWAYS have to run into my bathroom and I just have a mental breakdown, crying, and sad that they’re gone. This only happens with my sister, mom, and close cousins. Is this really separation anxiety or is it the fear of change? Do you think there are any tips for my specific case?
It’s tough to say without a full clinical assessment which we can’t really do over social media. I’d definitely recommend talking with a provider who is local to you. In the meantime you can try these general self-help strategies to see if they help. 💕
Thank you so much! I just really need someone to talk to and as a young teen sometimes it can be hard to find someone who cares, is trustworthy, or who understands. Even finding someone you are comfortable talking to can be hard. I’m just really happy that you responded and next time my close relative has to leave I will definitely be trying your tips!
Hi I'm 26 , i have seperation anxiety ,and i feel I'll do anything to be with them , move countries . I'm afraid of loosing them. But they don't feel about me so much .... Infact they may run away knowing how my mind works.....i can't even move abroad to study

Ive only watched the intro so far and youll probably never see this but when i was three i would hysterically cry for an hour or 2 or until i fell asleep and i was crying because my mom had to leave my daycare i have separation anxiety but the problem is i cried like that when my mom left from the time i was a baby and im now 16 and i cry hysterically the minute i close the door behind my mom when she leaves for work and if i wake up in the morning and shes already in bed then i cry the same way is this normal or do i have an extreme case
Btw when this happens I always grab one of my moms sweaters that smells like her and continue crying normally until I'm too tried and fall asleep
I've been using her sweaters and carrying them around like a teddy bare when this happens since I was a baby I'm now 16 and still do this
I do my best to see and respond to all comments (sometimes a few fall through the cracks or RUclips hides them on me) :) so glad you found this video and I hope it helps 💛 Which strategy will you try first??
I have separation anxiety with my mom. Like when I woke up a thought suddenly came in like what if I lose my mom? And I don't have energy to go to school and I am worried about my mom for the whole day. So I prefer to have courses online but my mom didn't let me do it. She wants me to go to school and have fun as a teenager. But I didn't have fun. I don't know what should I do now.
Try some of these tips over the summer when you don’t have the pressure of being in school to see which help and which don’t. If you enjoy online learning, I offer a much deeper dive on coping with difficult emotions like separation anxiety in the Coping Skills Crash Course. I’m still figuring out scheduling but I will likely be doing a live round in the near future…
I have to be at a camp 7 hours away and for 5 days for a school thing and if I don’t do this I can’t graduate and I’m scared
You got this!!! Use these strategies and make sure to communicate your plan with the people planning the trip for you, too. They may be open to assisting 🫶
My teenage daughter has this and it is awful...she is suspected autistic also. We get no help or support for it. I'm struggling as it incapacitates both our lives. She wears a bracelet I bought her all the time but it still doesn't help 😢🤦♀️ she now won't sleep in her own room 😢😢😢
It can be a struggle- so glad they have such a caring parent in you 💛
My mood depends on the way my best friend treats me.
I get anxious if I saw her with other classmates.
What am I going through because it sucks.
Totally makes sense and sounds like you really care about your friendship. These strategies can definitely help with that as a reminder that whether they are spending time with you or others your friendship is still important, too.
@@mallorygrimste thank you so much you giving me advice really means alot to me, I needed it!
When I was 12-13 I had severe separation anxiety I just couldn’t stay away from my mom I was with my mom throughout the day when I want to go to my grandparents house it be hard and so I start crying and mum ask if I wanna stay home but I really wanted to go there so I had a bear she said to me the bear is me so I would carry my bear to comfort three years past when I was 14 my separation anxiety was going away and I could be at my grandparents house for one week or two that was for. Summer but now I’m 15 and I can go anywhere without my mom and I don’t need to bring my bear with me anymore so if my future child ever had separation anxiety I would do the stuff animal technique my mum did with me 😊
LOVE this so much! Thank you for sharing 🫶
Can separation anxiety cause ocd intrusive thoughts for my father???
That would be a great thing to work through with your therapist since it’s such a particular question. Without a full clinical interview assessment it’s tough to know and social media isn’t ideal or appropriate for that type of work.
@@mallorygrimste ok ,thanks
