    // ABOUT
    Hi- I’m a mental health therapist, my name is Mallory and my pronouns are (she/hers). This channel is dedicated to helping YOU improve your mental health!
    We know the rates of teens struggling with suicide and self harm are rising and I want to reverse that trend! That’s why on this channel you’ll find I share a lot of self-care tips and coping strategies for major teen issues like anxiety, depression, alternatives to self harm and how to talk to parents and other grown-ups about these challenges.
    My biggest hope is to increase mental health awareness and break the stigma of talking to a therapist so teens can get the help they deserve and need right here, right now.

    I recently flushed my blades down the toilet after an incident where I went deeper than intended. I’m now beginning my sh free journey. I show my arms in public but not my legs as those are worse looking with scars. It’s my personal choice to keep those to myself. I wish everyone the ability to heal and break the habit ❤️

    I still to self harm and I always had to wear a hoodie so I could cover them from people asking questions and so my school council would not come take me to her office and ask me questions I did not know how to answer them.

      Thank you for sharing your experience. It can be so difficult to know how to talk about this with others. I have a great video about how to talk to your parents about self-harm and get help (you can watch it here: ruclips.net/video/W-2KPreQL5E/видео.html ) - I'm thinking maybe I need to do one about how to talk to your school counselor about it, too.

    I didn't know self harm was sometimes glorified in social media. Why do you think that is? What is the appropriate response schools should do if a student self harms? Talking to their parents and suggesting they see a professional?

    • @mallorygrimste
      @mallorygrimste  Год назад +2

      Ohhhhh yesss... I won't repeat some of the examples my teen clients have shown me but it can be a bit horrifying. There is a lot of "showing" under the "guise" of "increasing awareness" (I use quotes because it's actually more like trauma-dumping). When sharing your experience, it's so important to be considerate of other people's experiences and capacity for that sort of information. For example, some people can watch the show SVU with no problem. For me, it's too real and close to the work I do so I prefer to watch something else for entertainment when I'm not working to support kiddos who've gone through similar experiences.
      As for the school responses, every school has their own safety protocol. Collaboration with the parents and/or other professional supports is important. They may need certain modifications such as being allowed to meet with an in-school counselor as needed for crisis coaching or support in the moment, etc. And yes, if they aren't already linked with professional help and there seems to be a need to work with the family in referring to and accessing appropriate help.

      @@mallorygrimste is the problem with trauma dumping on social media their their friends feel obligated to follow and respond? I personally would just stop following them and if they ask say it's too much to follow.

      You nailed it! Plus most people don’t include a content warning to give people a choice if they’d like to engage or not. These days it may not be enough to follow or unfollow since unknown creators can show up on your explore pages

    I am a coach for a surf life-saving club so we are on the beach in club bathers. last season I just had visible scars on my things and I wore speedo shorts to cover them but this season is about to start and now I have more on my arms and wrists and long sleeve swimmers give me sensory issues but I'm around kids. I don't know what to do.

      Thanks for sharing your experience Jade! It can so tough to know what to do. Since coaching is typically a working/volunteer position, definitely check with your supervisor or HR if there are policies about this already. That may be your answer right then. If they leave it up to you, I’d take your time to reflect on the considerations mentioned in this video- particularly around how you prepared you are for others’ responses and reactions. Hope this helps you decide!! You got this!! 💛

    I’m 30. I have huge and extremely deep scars. It’s obvious that they’re self harm. It kind of makes me even more depressed to see them.

      Sending you lots of care 💕 hoping you can connect with a local therapist who can help you navigate these feelings - it can be a common (but not the only) response

    Is there a concern that talking about self harm leads to students getting the first idea/inkling to do self harm? When I was in middle school I would have never thought about it because I didn't know it existed, but maybe I would have if I knew about it then.

      Great question Glen! Some people are concern it's like the Voldemort effect- (if you say his name, it gives him more power). In the mental health world we've found that just isn't true. In fact, when you can name and talk about self-harm directly it can actually help decrease the shame that exists in around getting or asking for help. Hope that helps clarify that for ya!

      Thank you so much for sharing this experience. I’m so glad you’re getting help to address the safety concerns and the emotional thinking around these experiences. It can be tough to accept the care offered - proud of you for inspiring others who may be struggling with this to accept help too!! 🫶

    Can I say something a little off topic so I was on the bed beside my mom she was on her phone and my little sister was saposed to leave with my uncle or brother she was about to get forgotten so I told her she should be leaving right now she said to me ain’t you a patient and she pointed at my wrist were my cuts/scars are and I knew she was saying that I’m a mental patient and I’m like you did not need to bring that up I’m crying cause she so rude I understand she’s 12 in a half she understands mental health she knows it’s wrong but she’s untitled I lost her trust over time by the way she talks I can say anything personal she’s definitely not a person to have at a friends house not bf/gf house no way anyway it’s effecting me even more I’m already struggling and I’m doing really good without cutting myself 3-4 weeks clean after I keep curing myself she say she understands but she fucking don’t she just makes it worse 😭☹️
