- This month on Patreon I regurgitate every bit of information I can remember about one of my favorite Leo Kottke compositions. This performance is based on the 1969 recording from 6- and 12-String Guitar. I hope you can join us for my tablature and hour-long lesson video of the piece. / andrewlardnerguitar
From the very first note you absolutely hit a home run with this tune. It is an impeccable homage to the original. Thank you!
Wow, thank you!
Ditto what they said, and just want to compliment the compositional artistry in this piece. It’s expansive and attainable simultaneously, blurring the line between folk art and classical nuances.
Quality work ....I know the original so well but believe me you have nailed that....greetings from the UK
First Kottke song I ever listened to!! This entire 6- and 12- string guitar album is a masterpiece. Beautiful cover per usual.
Beautiful.
impeccable playing on a guitar that has tone beyond words.
Beautiful as always Andy! One of the songs I was hoping for! This was the song playing when my Yvonne and I walked out of the church after our wedding.
Never actually said this, but first!
Thanks, boss!
Haha nice!
this will go as one of my favorites, and I will replay it a thousand of times :)
Wow, thanks!
One of the best renditions, ever. Bravo!
Great job Andrew - beautifully played
Man, that is the perfect 12-string tone. Are you using silk and steels on that guitar? What brand and gauge?
Thank you so much for this. You give those of us that love this music something to strive for. Your dedication to this music shines thru in every way.
Thank you, means a lot to me.
Great!!!
It's the most often requested song for me to play amongst my friends of the last 50 years! Well, that and "Mona Ray". Expertly played, Andrew! If I close my eyes, I can imagine the Armadillo album rotating around on my long departed turntable!
I just saw Kottke live last weekend for the first time, what an experience. Thank you 😢 for doing this.
My son loves Kottke also. He grew up listening to him, Andrew. 😂
Wow. I can’t believe I just found this channel. Much respect to you sir.
Welcome aboard!
Great job with Ojo! That was the first song I learned by him. I just saw him in Ridgefield, CT recently and did not disappoint. Leo had a hilarious story getting mocked by a girl scout troop for his lack of skills canoeing down a river.
Leo is the best.
Fugging well played. And. Recorded!
So beautiful. How did i missed that video ?
I love how the gibson sounds omg that 12 has some tone! I also think your touch/attack/feel were awesome.
Woooow! Beautiful.
Absolument impeccable! Bravo!
Very faithful to the original version on the "armadillo album".
I was also glad to see that you didn't make the mistake that a few have made, which is copying his mistakes (the accidental high note in the intro, for instance).
Nicely done.
Oh, Andrew... I'd love to see you play "Grim to the Brim"! Kottke.
Nailed it! I have never seen Leo live. He played here in Houston this year and as my luck usually works, I had to be out of town at that time. Maybe next time.
I enjoy all your videos. 🙏
Thank you! Hope you get to catch him soon. I’ve driven 12 hours to see him play before.
Thank you Andrew! As always u nailed it! 🙏🏻
Nice work!
❤thx Andrew!
Very Nice!
Heart and soul. Well done!
And *this* was what I subscribed for all those months (years?) ago… nailed it, Andrew! ❤
As always, great job. Beautiful Andy. yessss.
Davvero molto bravo. La più bella interpretazione dopo l'originale del '69.
Absolutley amazing!
So smooth. Perfect version. Combination of Kottke and your own great flair. Great job!
I it really is unbelievable how spot-on you perform these difficult pieces from the old masters. Hard to put into words, but sure fun to watch & listen to.
Thanks Josh really nice of you to say.
Beautifully played. Looking forward to tackling this one...
Great job
Thanks Andy. Sounds great!
So nice!!! 😀
Great job on Ojo Andrew!!! 🎼🎶🎧🎤
Beautiful. Thank you, Andrew.
Outstanding.
Thanks dude
You aced Leo’s masterpiece.
The B-45s are multiplying! Lovely playing and piece choice as always, might give this a go myself.
I had 4 of them over here at one point 😜
Hi Andrew beautiful! What tuning are you using in this?
Great!
Hi, apart from the thumb, do you wear picks on two fingers or three?
This is an amazing rendition, accurate, fluid, relaxed and mesmerizing.
You play so well and relaxed but make it look so easy.
Carry on with these pieces please!
Just index and middle. Thank you.
Fantastic! What's the tuning on that?
Great job as always man
That is a wonderful rendition of Leo's tune. One of his best 12-string compositions imho. It really brought me back to the 1970s when I was working in the fields on a farm in Co. Tipperary in Ireland.
That old Gibson 12-string sounds marvellous. Is it the same model that the great Gordon Lightfoot played throughout his illustrious career?
Nice playing, love the sound! What strings are you using?
Labella
Wow! ❤

Hi mr lardner only two more months for school and i like your videos
Haha look forward to seeing you again buddy
Beautifully done, even using fingerpicks, nice! :-) The end of the bridge bit when it goes em, F#, A7 sounded different from what I'm used to, mostly listening to live versions of Leo playing that, I am sure he did many variations over the years.
The 1969 version is the only I’m aware of where it was played this way.
@@andrewlardner Yeah, sounds nice like this as well. One day I might try to play this tune again as well, the sound is still in my head, but last time I checked hands were not ready for the complex hammer on/baseline placement. ;-) Good on you for keeping this great music alive!
Hi Andrew. Terrific rendition of Ojo! I know you do excellent covers of other Leo Kottke tunes as well. I have been a fan of his since the 70's and play some of his tunes. I play a version of Ojo, but I know I haven't got it "quite right," especially some of the bass notes picked with the thumb. I have several TAB versions, but wonder if you know of the best one that duplicates Leo's version as you are doing? Thanks in advance!
I have my own score of this tune as well as a long lesson video on my patreon site, it is taken from Leo's version on the 6&12 record. It would most likely get you to where you want to be!
@@andrewlardner Hi Andrew. I signed up for your Tier 2 Patreon membership today. Look forward to enjoying your music and lesson content!
Wow, thank you so much!
When I grow up I want to become Andrew Lardner
Haha charming, but no, you don't.
GREAT job. Wonderful song to play as well. Maybe I should get my fingerpicks out again...I always tear up my index fingernail just playing electric guitar with wimpy gauge strings.
Great stuff again. But man, that shirt...I mean, great picking!
If I listened to this without video, I won't be able to tell if it was you or Leo who played this. Good job
Quite the compliment.
Holy smokes! You sound just like Leo’s original recording. Amazing job.
What guitar is that btw?
Early B45
Very good and thanks, ive been looking for some 12 string tunes to try (good lessons i should say)
Snorkel is another on my want to learn list
I almost did Snorkel this month!
@andrewlardner very good, at least its on the short list, looking forward to it
What strings are you using?
Andrew, I've turned my wife on to your page. She's watched me play, well try to play ALOT of the same songs that you play. We watch you play on the TV with the surround sound on! Please play Mona Ray and post it. Thank you for the show. Steve and Jenny Corridori.
Thanks Steve. Yeah I would love to do that one some day.
If you ever play publicly in Milwaukee or Madison please let us know! Your Kottke covers are amazing. Morning Is The Long Way Home someday? 😉
Oooo would love to do that one.
Morning is the Long Way home and Taxco Steps and then I can go to my great reward.
Excellent performance my friend! I don't know if the tuning used is DADGAD? Congratulations Andy!
Standard
@@andrewlardner Thank you
Beauty! By the way, have you covered “watermelon”?
I would really like to, you might just see it soon.
@@andrewlardner that would be great. One of my favorites from the six and 12 album.
Twelve string with finger picks is not easy. Also the feel is perfect but yeah, anyways, full marks mate!!
Brilliant!....year of that Gibson?
63
@@andrewlardner great tone
Sound?
?
The Gibsons might be my favorite 12 string sound, the octave strings add just enough color and it’s not an in-your-face 12 stringy tone
Yes I don't know why but on these the high octaves sit perfectly where they should in the tonal spectrum.
You are one of the cleanest players I’ve heard. I would love to hear you play one of my originals. Please listen to a few. Thanks Dan Abbene Just so you know, I’m not looking to boost my stats or get you to subscribe or endorse me in any way. I just would like to hear another guitarist play one of my pieces. A private video would suit. I have tab for most tunes. Thanks for the consideration
very nice---with all due respect---finger picks are very limiting as to what you can do---throw them away---they work to some degree for this particular tune---although they are offering you good volume---they take away the ability for the right hand to be more expressive---hoping I am not sounding arrogant---I play Ojo as well--without fingerpicks---allows for more nuance ---I am only making this comment with good intentions---the master of this style Leo Kottke eventually came to the same conclusion--he threw away his fingerpicks.
Respectfully disagree. Love using picks for some things, bare fingers for others.
Hey it is all about making music--and you are doing a wonderful job of that--I included one of my videos for your consideration ruclips.net/video/mHDVexhNkqI/видео.html
