  • With no snowboarding experience and an athletic background in kung fu, Liu Jiayu became an unexpected Olympic halfpipe star. In 2018, she won the first Olympic snowboarding medal for China. Since then, she has chosen to pursue her own path in snowboarding beyond competition, one that will hopefully inspire an entire generation of Chinese snowboarders.
In this episode of MY TURN, our host Selema Masekela joins Jiayu in Whistler, BC, where she’s reconnecting with snowboarding after three years. Selema’s interview digs into her unlikely snowboarding origins and how she is now embracing the freedom of snowboarding to reach her full potential as an athlete.

    About MY TURN
You can tell a lot about a rider by the way they turn. The tracks we each leave behind tell a story, saying, “This is how I do it.” But when we ride, we’re not always on a board, and our turns take many forms. MY TURN gives people from Burton’s community a blank canvas to take their turn, make their mark, and tell their story.
    About Burton

Today, Burton designs and manufactures industry-leading products for snowboarding and the outdoors. As a sustainability leader within the outdoor and winter sports industries, Burton is the world's first snowboard company to become a certified B Corporation®.

hell yeah! Jiayu is on fire. we definitely need more athletes like Jiayu in china who can shift their mind from competing to passion, really enjoy the sports itself , enjoy the culture and vibes. more people like her we got the easier we can build up the actions sports vibe and stop the toxic Utilitarianism!!!!

Do you have to be a professional or have a professional with you when going back country?

You do not have to have a professional with you to go in the backcountry, but you should always take an avalanche safety and first aid class before heading into the backcountry.

Love these videos but I wish they were longer and more in depth. I feel like we only get to scratch the surface of the personality of these riders.

So sad that Burton only focuses on these athletes (don't get me wrong, they deserve it completely) rather than spending their money on giving back to all their customers etc... tsk tsk no wonder so many left Burton for other brands.

Why would they give their money to their customers? That doesn't make sense at all.

You're joking, right? It's up to brands in the industry to sponsors riders/skiers so that we can have professionals who push boundaries and show what's possible (both in videos and in competitions). The industry would be rather dead if people were living off competition money alone...
