Backdated 911 Carrera Sport by 911 Retroworks - The Perfect Blend of Porsche?

- I've been asked a few times to review a car like this. Very popular in 911 circles, but equally controversial, this is a 1980s 911 styled to look much older.
Many companies offer such a product, but this one is by 911 Retro Works, and it is as good to look at as it is to drive.

When the heart says “Singer”, but the head (and wallet) laugh hysterically.
To be fair, Stevie Wonder could spot some of your shirts.
From the space station.
From the moon
ofc he could, Stevie isn't blind, just ask Shaq, Lionel Richie, Anthony Anderson and numerous others, its all just an act
Bwahahahha! 🤣🤣🤣
"I saw the shirt" hahaha im dying xD
I'm here for the shirt.
I'm here for the Fuchs.
With that new exhaust, oh my - goosebumps 😱 🤤
The adage 'it's not how fast you go, but how you go fast'....perfectly demonstrated! 🤗
Usually, I'm not a fan of backdate 911s, but this one seems to be fantastic. Love the look and the sound.
Jay, you’ve reignited my passions for these. Thanks. Now I’ve gotta go look at old 911’s to buy. 😁
Great review J and what a car! Total perfection 😁
I love the whole idea of restomodding!
The driving cam shots were really great, I liked the shots of you using the pedals too!
Love the low down shots of the reflections in the bodywork. That's a very shiny car, like a mirror. Looks fabulous.
What a beautiful beast!! Thanks for making such awesome 911 videos! Please keep 'em coming! I absolutely love it! Cheers!
Luv the new Intro Jay!! And that kerbside rear view ahead shot of the side of the car and the open road ahead!!!!
@5:56 !!!!!!!!!!!!! Now that how a Porsche 911 SHOULD sound!!!!
Jamie, as I've said before, I believe your Porsche videos are second to none. This one is an excellent look at some of the options available to those of us who appreciate the purity of the earlier models. We do not get this kind of perspective from any of the bozos currently making car videos stateside, so very much appreciated and keep them coming please!
I think thats a sign of getting old. Finding the sensation of speed more important than actual speed. 😅
These are definately my cup if tea. Over here you cant really go fast anywhere. So a bit more theatre at normal-ish-er speeds,.. yes please.
I must be ageing too
Just changed an e92 M3 for an old 996 and it’s a million times better even though slower. You can use the speed and it feels so light and nimble
the sensation of speed is for yourself to enjoy, while actual speed is for the cops to enjoy.
Ding Ye very well put 👍
trublu97 the M3 felt a hell of a lot quicker once it reached 5.5k revs
Nobody really cares about speed that much anymore. In the old days it was a constant battle between BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes, Porsche and Ferrari... and whoever put the best numbers on the table. Now with electric cars that battle has watered down. New cars are like sitting in a laptop. In these old classics you still get the analog feeling of the REAL DRIVING. They're fast enough for that. I'd take an old Porsche over the new one any day of the week. They have "spirit" while the new ones are just computerized digital supercars.
That is utterly fantastic! Wonderful stuff James
An exciting car. Not too much power, just enough to make driving fun. As usual, engaging review. Makes one feel, “I want one of those”. Thanks Jay
Thanks for posting about 911 Retro Works. They are resto- modding my 964 starting in November. I’ve yet to decide on final specification. That exhaust sounded great. Once the project is complete, if you want to drive and review it, I’d be happy to let you.
OH Sir, that is a lovely car thank you so much for this and to whoever made this car available for this video.
Great vid. For the first time ever, I want a 911. I love this.
To be fair I didn’t really like you at first but your fast becoming a professional. The cars you review for example are on point too
Sounds great. Lovely job on the Restomod 👍
Hi Jay, there is nothing more to say about your Video than “GREAT !!!“!
Thanks for that inspiring Film.
Greetings from Germany,
Juergen :)
Jay great video again on the Porsche. Please see if you can review a SInger one day as you mentioned as not sure if you have previously but man that would be brilliant.
I'll keep their name in mind for my next car. Very nice review.
Good lord, that second exhaust sounds fucking beautiful and I'm not normally one for Porsches!
This is awesome! With this (and a cirtain 105 series Alfa on Joe Macari's insta) I have realized I could actually own a backdated 911 or an Alfaholics fettled GTV sometime in this lifetime! The mirror finish on the side of the car looks sublime.
Great video. We love it when a classic pops up. ✌🏼
Great video Jay 👍🏻 Being a 911 only bloke (F80 M3 Competition being the exception) I obviously enjoyed it immensely.
The shirts are causing us to have a higher than average hurricane season over here across the pond.
What a beautiful machine, great video!
Nice vid as usual ! I own a 996 and still own it and love it. one thing i noticed after this video is that interior little door lock stick which existed as long as since 991 existence until the 996. this is one of the nice detail elements missing. to those purists, this missing element is as bad as the fried eggs and watercool..
Wow, what an amazing car. It made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I’d take this over a new 911 every day and twice on Sunday.
Fantastic video
A restomod 911 is where my cash would go if I had that budget
"How much car, do you really, need?" That says it all James. A car's ability to communicate with the driver is, IMO, the most important thing.
Great episode. Thanks mate.
Picking up my own restomod black, 1988, 3.2 Carrera tomorrow. Fingers crossed it's every bit as good as this one.
Very nice, back to basics. Lightweight and enough power. This is a fun car.
perfect car .. stunning looks with ( probably ) reasonable reliability .. makes all the right noises within speed limits .. and a usable interior
how does he make it sound this good, so many older 911s don't sound this good.
Lovely car, tastefully done just needs a period correct or non dating number plate, I drove a stock 88 Carerra for 10 years, one of my all time favourites!
What exhaust was fitted lastly? It sounds great.
totally agree about Surrey roads. When testing suspension code on 720S it was just infuriating, compared to other counties with fewer mini-roundabouts, heavy traffic and narrow lanes. Had to head into Sussex for some decent space. I can see why Surrey is useful commuter belt for those going into London but I would definitely not live there and put up with high house prices if I owned a decent car. Pound for pound, you're better off living in Wales for sure :-)
The paint job appears to be epic.
Absolutely stunning! Its the perfect car frankly. Maybe worth giving 911Rennsport UK a shout. Make for a great video!
Well done!
*JayEmm on Cars* Awesome my bro😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Beautiful car!
I think you found your calling card. Jay Leno has his blue denim, you have patterned button-up shirts.
"They work" hahahaha. Amazing. Too funny Jay. Great EP once again!
Is there any cooler way to turn up somewhere? 🤔
Literally a work of art in and out 😍
Definitely the handsomeness of the pain is what sells this car. It is one thing go adorn the car with chrome highlights, it is something else to paint it an absolutely mirror gloss black. This car is right on the money about its looks.
Love 911's and Jacamo!
A bit of detail about the interior would have been welcome. Perhaps do something with the builder? Regardless, I’d swap it for my modern 911 in a heartbeat.
All I need is my two Brompton bikes and my e86 coupe, but a modern retro Porsche can be a perfect replacement, then am happy 🤓
Sounds great! What exhaust is that?!
Before I started watching the channel, I always thought nobody could pick shirts as bad as James May does. Obviously I was wrong, but I'm not sure I really care to be honest. I am here for you JayEmm and the cars.
Excellent
Just watched a new 2023 video from Sheffield Porsche Center. 911 Rennsport now quoting prices starting from £160,000 and upwards.
Subject to affordability I am interesting in buying a classic restomod etc.
Damn that sounds freaking epic😎 Wonder if you can get a 996/7 to sound like that, coz that’s all I’d be able to afford.
Bernard George unfortunately I think it’s part of the air cooled flat-6...
Lovely car but amazing paintwork, proper mirror stuff!
I noticed that as well.
The camera angle was spot on for a reflective treat.
Sounds fantastic and looks a real beauty cracker of a car
You used to be able to pick up those early 911s for 1000s now they’re 100s of 1000s. My old 79 911T would be about 60-80k now and not the 8k I bought and sold it for in 98.
Shirts aside, that Porsche is gorgeous.
The sub intro was classic.
oh what a beauty
This is the best car you have ever featured by a long shot. Everything else pales into insignificance.
A lovely car. You were a bit harsh on the equally lovely Bentley.
Wunderschöner Porsche!
Now that's cool!
But did the "engine warning" light come on?😉👍✌
I believe Confucius said:
"The best lane for your cart will be four times it's width or more.
Three times may suffice.
From this it follows that your cart should be no wider than you require.
For to exceed that width will limit the lanes you may choose.
I would have like to have seen more of the 911
Today, how much shirt do you really need🤣♥️👍
😂😂🤣
So sad I missed out on an early 911. I test drive a ‘67 short wheelbase version for £7k when I was in my 20’s. Goodness knows what that’s worth today?
What an intro!
Even my 385HP 997 feels difficult to exploit fully on our modern, cramped, heavily policed roads, and I'm seriously considering something like this. Outright power and speed just isn't that relevant to the way we use our road cars these days.
Mate that car is brill
It looks like 8x16 wheels up front? Are those original ET 10,6? Im struggling getting 7x16 ET23 to work up front on mine! Please tell me more mr owner if you see this :)
This car is gorgeous.
Ha! This is my old car. I designed it in 2017 and Rick built it. Still looks nice but I just wasn’t using it enough plus the handling wasn’t that great to be honest. Hope somebody will love it more than I did!
Lovely car that
Yes that’s super cool, I agree all these ridiculous bhp cars are pointless, you can’t use the power on normal roads so seems daft, we need fab looking cars with great acceleration but more than 140 mph I don’t think so!!
Brilliant car, I'd have one if I had £100k spare!
Talking of Yaaarshire, what about a video on't Cosie?
Much better, why did he take that off, its perfect
Get rid of the E prefix plate. Dateless or a L or M suffix plate would look much better.
You were right out of The Office 03:32
That is a little honey! Great review too
Performance cars are about what you want not need
6:00 I have no words for the sound it makes
It’s a great car!
Beauty 👍
My golden retriever likes the retro 911..
I love the look of the impact bumper cars my ideal 911 would be a 964 carrera 4 turbo body made to look like an impact bumper or a 964 turbo made to look like an impact bumper turbo. That way get ABS air traction control and better handling with the old look.
Ah Hell yeah, that is a proper exhaust. No wonder he was insisting...
Controversial or not, it's a lovely, lovely car.
Personally I need all the Car
good video, although would have been nice to see more of the car ..engine for example... boot too, back seats...
I drove one of their cars, was very tempted to buy one, but the "communication" with the owner of the company was almost impossible and the camber effect, ie the car would follow the cruves / slope of the road 100%, which I was told was the wide tyres, but its not. Other "experts" told me the suspension system on the car to make a 964 car into an older porsche needs a lot more work than they do, but I am NO expert. The interior looks great, although there are some stretch marks which should not be there bearing in mind its all brand new.
Engine options go up to about 380 + HP, but the car I drove was quite highly tuned and cut out 4 times in a 20 minute drive with no explanation from the builder.
Having said all that, for 110k, a car which looks very similar to those as you say that cost far more, I guess you just have to put up with certain things. One problem is, you do this car and spend the minimum of 110 and more likely 130k all in, then its a car for you, for life. You will never get your money back on these as now others are doing the same based on 993s which offer better safety and handling and reliability. Also, you choose your own style, and the next person who wants to spend 100+ k on a car like this will also want their own style.
In the end I got an ariel Nomad.... go figure!
This is not a 964 based car. And you do see shots of engine and boot don't you?
Just wondering Gary, what made you change from hunting for a classic looking 911 to a mad, off-road, toy like a Nomad?!
Mark Cook good question. I guess my answer would be we all have our top 5 or 10 or more cars and although a backdated porche is in my top 5/6 the nomad is also and for me is one of the coolest cars out there. It’s also a sports car “ish” that you don’t need to worry about Ramps or speed bumps which is nice.
But the other factor would be it holds its value quite well and for me that’s a an important factor. I felt spending 110+ and it would be ++ in reality on a 911 would loose me about 30/40/50 k as soon as I did it.
Then even insurance for me is an issue as I spend a lot of time abroad with cars and so regule insurance companies are a pain and the whole EU has never worked Inma insurance sense, unlike roaming for example. Getting an agreed value would be hard and a years green card impossible.
So in the end instead of getting a backdated 911 and let’s say a vantage new shape or even new 911. I got a few different cars.
Finally in terms of driving pleasure in my quote wide but inexperienced driving history there is nothing to compare to a lotus 7 type car !! Helps if you are not overweight or too tall
@@garymurraya Ah! Fair enough if you've gone for a few different cars, it's a different route to go, creating a collection and adding different experiences to it like the Nomad. I do like the Atom, never been in a Nomad yet but they look ace. Sounds like you're happy with the choices you made so good on you. Just out of interest what else did you buy?
@@cookieinthewoods I have a 2015 Landrover Defender, modified by Bowler. THis i bought as its certainly an all time top 5 icon and also as it doesnt depreciate much if anything for the next 5 years. Also I have 2 dogs. Its a 90, not a 110.
I have also gone for a lotus elise cup 250, which may have been a mistake given the fact I also have the westfield sport 250, but at least the lotus has a roof kind of and AC kind of. It was also cheaper and holds its value more than an Evora, which has a much better sound of course. Thats it, my 4 car garage.
I'd like an esprit, a 911 targa from about 2010 or an evora from 2018, where pricing for these 3 cars ranges from 30k up to about 65k, but no rush and 5 cars would be enough.
If money was no object, then a Taycan would be nice, but EC cars will improve over the next 2 3 years and network has to catch up before I'd get one.
Enjoy your day
Those shirts can be seen from low orbit
Jay, try & get your paws on one of the few U.K. Singers & see if they are worth 5 times the cost of this one ? (....I suspect they may well be)
