LAKE BUTTERMERE | A 5 Mile Circular Solo Hike In Winter | Lake District National Park

- Come along with me on a short & easy walk in the Lake District National Park around the incredibly beautiful Lake Buttermere. I parked at the St James' church just on the edge of the village of Buttermere (during busier months there is plenty of parking in the National Trust car park in the village), and it took me just under 2 hours to complete the walk around the lake. I'd recommend this walk for anyone visiting the Lakes for the first time as it is the perfect introductory walk to give you a flavour of what this famous National Park has to offer for very little effort!
As always, I hope you enjoy this video and thank you for watching!

Buttermere is such a stunning walk.. love it!! Peaceful
It is, probably my favourite place in the National Park! As you say, so serene 😍
Hey, looks incredible and definitely paying a visit this year. Now I know why Buttermere is Richard Hammond's most favourite happy place.😊
Hopefully you can make the visit this year Mark - it’s a truly beautiful place in the lakes 😊
@@shefreelyroams Thank you for your reply, yes it most certainly is isnt it. I've been to Ullswater about 4 times because it's closer to home, Coniston twice, once in secondary school at an outdoor persuit centre aged 14 (think I fell in love with the lakes then lol) Windermere twice and Keswick/Derwentwater twice. Bucket list is Buttermere this year in 2024, looks incredible 😊
A picturesque view of Fleetwith Edge in the background during your lunch.
Yes you’re right, that lunch spot was a great place to view it 😊
Loving the videos, very peaceful, inspiring and easy to watch 😊 keep it up!
Thanks Harry, pleased to hear you’re enjoying them 🫶🏻😊
Buttermere is stunning
It really is 📸🌳💛
Thank you so much for the great video. My expectations are now very high for doing the walk in September.
Thank you - pleased to hear you enjoyed the video 😊 and September will be a lovely time of year for it, maybe even have some early autumn colours on display!
I am heading to buttermere in March 2024 and can’t wait
Hope you enjoy - it’s a beautiful place in the lakes!
Absolutely beautiful, great video!
Thanks Kevin! It's an absolutely beautiful place in the Lakes 🫶🏻
@@shefreelyroams Absolutely agreed, Christine. 👍🏻
The joy shone right on through Christine. I could think of a few words; Evocative, liberating, illuminating, energizing, healing, filtering and on this one faultless. Good going. Mark
Aw thank you Mark for the kind & beautiful words. I’m so glad my happiness came across - I hope you’re continuing to make a good recovery from your injury 🤗
@@shefreelyroams A pleasure Christine. Yeah, the spirit was unmistakable. Me? I'm getting stronger and will be exploring my much loved hills and valleys soon. Peace.
So glad to hear that - just in time for the longer days & fairer weather! 🌞
@@shefreelyroams Yes, indeed. Hope you can watch Christine if I post a few. Have a cool week ahead.
Hey there , such is the randomness of you tube , I watched your vid, lovely to see the lakes . Thanks 😊
Thanks Aaron, glad to hear the randomness of RUclips brought you to the channel & you stuck around for the adventure, as you say the Lakes are such a lovely place 💛
@@shefreelyroams absolutely, I used to live at the north of Keswick and I really miss it sometimes ☹️
I can imagine, that's a great part of the Lakes to be based - hopefully you can get back there soon for some walks 😊
Beautiful walk.
It’s a beautiful part of the Lakes! Thanks for tagging along 🫶🏻
Another wonderful adventure of yours! Looks incredible out there, and even the grey clouds add extra atmosphere. Great video Christine!
Thanks so much Mario! It is absolutely spectacular in the Lakes, even on gloomy days - glad you enjoyed 😊
We did that walk yesterday, absolutely stunning views in glorious sunshine. Very busy as you would expect at Springbank week but good to see everyone paddling, swimming and all the paddle boards out. Id say Buttermere has to be my favourite Lakeland place with Wasdale a close second. Great video again and thankyou for sharing 🙂
I can imagine it was - so good to see everyone enjoying the outdoors & this stunning place ☀️ I’m actually yet to do this walk in sunny conditions & you’re right, Wasdale is lovely too, not sure I can pick a favourite Lakeland place in the Lakes! Pleased you enjoyed this one too, thanks for watching 💛
Always a fab walk in any weather, gorgeous, I did it about a month back early Sunday morning so may have walked past you !! When I was much younger I attempted Red Pike in terrible mist on my own. I got lost and ran into some local grouse shooters who let me eventually get down to Buttermere with them. Lovely film
Thanks Paul, you're exactly right, great walk irrespective of weather & you may have done although I did this walk on a Monday! That sounds like a terrible experience as I've heard Red Pike is an awesome hike if the conditions are good, glad to hear you found some friendly locals to help you. Glad you enjoyed the video, take care 💚
@@shefreelyroams My fave book on the Lakes (and there are so many) is A walk round the Lakes by Hunter Davis, if you havent read it please check it out, its a cracker
Happy trails
I haven't read that one yet although it has been recommend to me before, so should definitely be up next on my reading list! Thanks for the recommendation & happy outdoor roaming too 😊
Right enjoyed your video, i have walked around Buttermere many times, its my favourite place, i will be there next Monday for a couple of days camping and hoping to do some nice landscape photography
Pleased to hear you enjoyed the video & it’s a beautiful place isn’t it?! Hope you have an awesome time next week & get some nice captures 🤞🏻😊
@@shefreelyroams Thanks, looking forward to it but looks like its going to be a cold one lol
Wonderful relaxing video. You have such a love for the Lakes that shines through
Thanks Richard - glad you enjoyed the video. The Lakes are such a beautiful place, hard not to love them but happy to hear that love came across 💛

Thanks Brett - glad you enjoyed the video, it’s a beautiful walk to do!
I was brought up in the 'Lakes' many a hike as a 5yr old. 'New Sub' 🤝
Oh wow, I can't imagine how exciting that must have been as a kid! Glad you enjoyed the video & thank you for the support 🧡
With such a beautiful smile and so peaceful videography I wonder why you don’t have that many followers. They are all missing out!
Thanks Frederic for the kind words! I’m glad you enjoyed the video 😊

Pleased you enjoyed this walk last month, it's a great one to do in the Lakes - especially in Autumn with all the beautiful colours!

@@kevinsaward2005 oh amazing, I love wales so beautiful - enjoy!
What a lovely walk Christine! Will follow your route when I’m back up in a couple of weeks!
It's a lovely circular route & I can imagine really beautiful in autumn with all the changing colours, hope you enjoy :)
Was in the lakes at the beginning of October this year. First time in about 4 years. I know what you mean about a feeling you get I felt that this time when visiting Wastwater it’s really hard to take in.
Although we stayed in Staveley near Windermere we spent more time over the West side. Did you drive through Honister Pass just along from Buttermere that’s an awe inspiring place, as is the Stanley Ghyll Waterfall.
The Lakes are such a beautiful area can’t wait to get back there. Subbed to your channel
Aw wonderful time of year to be in the Lakes! Love wastwater too, hope you had a lovely time 😊
I didn’t drive through Honister Pass on this day but have done previously, really stunning scenery you’re right! & thank you, pleased you enjoyed the video 🫶🏻
Thank you for sharing this beautiful hike 🥾 Nature is simply beautiful 🤩 At any time of the year 🤗
Thank you Gerold - so glad you enjoyed the video ☺️ you’re exactly right, regardless of the season, nature has so much beauty to offer 🌏🤍
Really enjoyed that so peaceful. I really must visit. Before the pandemic I sent a lot of time with my mates in Wasdale climbing and we wild camped in the Esk valley and did Scafell Pike the hard way. Unfortunately I'm just getting over long Covid so a gentle wander round Buttermere would just do me fine.
Thanks Bob, so happy to hear you enjoyed the video! Sounds incredible, I love the Esk valley and it's a beautiful route up to Scafell Pike. Hope you can slowly but surely get over long Covid, as imagine that's been tough, & get back out enjoying the outdoors again - this walks a great one to ease back in. Take care 💛
That was a wonderful adventure. I’ve done part of that circular walk and fully intend going back to complete it. I discovered the Lake District for the first time last year fairly late in life. What a wonderful place. I can’t think of anywhere lovelier than Buttermere. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you David, so happy to hear you enjoyed the video and that you've been able to visit the lake previously. I would definitely recommend a return visit to complete the full walk around the lake, as you say Buttermere is truly a lovely place. All the best with exploring more of the Lake District, better late than never I say! 😊 💛
Even better looking down on it from haystacks
Well that was a pleasant walk around Buttermere, with good views.
Thanks Iain, it’s a beautiful walk to do, spoilt for views in all directions even with poor weather!
@@shefreelyroams Well, it made you smile plenty which is always good.
Can’t harm can it ☺️😊
Nice trip out for you. Great place for a walk. Enjoy the rest of your week. First time watching.
It was great fun - sometimes the mixed weather days are the best in the Lakes! Glad you enjoyed & thanks, enjoy the rest of your week/the weekend! 🤗
Hello Christine, it was a lovely walk , and the lake is so beautiful, surrounded by mountains. Love the colors of the landscape. 🥾💛

Hi Christine,
Only just discovered you, enjoyed the Buttermere walk, I’ve done that route many times usually anticlockwise so it brought back wonderful memories😀. I will be working my way through your other vids, meanwhile dare I ask what is next? Looks like you are in the Alps at the moment!

Hi Miss Freely Toams. How is the parking situation? Lovely hike and splendid nature observation. Your smile encourages the audience to to get out house and enjoy hikes. 11:12 Thank you very much. look forward to the future vids.
Hi! Thank you for the kind words, glad you enjoyed the video 💛 😊 The parking situation at Buttermere was fine for me during off-peak season but I imagine during the Summer months it could get busy so I'd recommend getting there early! Hope that helps x
‘Embrace me then, ye Hills, and close me in;
Now in the clear and open day I feel
Your guardianship; I take it to my heart;
‘Tis like the solemn shelter of the night…….
Dear Valley, having in thy face a smile
Though peaceful, full of gladness. Thou art pleased,
Pleased with thy crags and woody steeps, thy Lake,
Its one green island and its winding shores;
The multitude of little rocky hills,
Thy Church and cottages of mountain stone
Clustered like stars some few, but single most
And lurking dimly in their shy retreats.‘

Thanks Naomi 😊 this is a very easy path to follow all the way around the lake, well signposted and clear path throughout! I’d recommend parking in the national trust car park here - CA13 9XA. Hope you enjoy 🫶🏻
Thanks so much 😁
You have a subscriber 👍, good video, keep sharing your great videos, just about to watch your stickle tarn next, feel free to have a look at my channel, love walking around buttermere, my favourite tbh is derwent water, a great 12 mile ish walk
Cheers Mark 😊 I’ll have a look this weekend 👍🏻 I love derwent water too! Haven’t done Catbells yet but hopefully soon, heard it can get very busy as also very popular!
just Buttermere will suffice, no need to add Lake . The mere ending of Buttermere means lake, The only lake in Cumbria is Bassenthwaite Lake
Thanks Stewart for sharing that fact about the only lake being Bassenthwaite Lake, hadn't realised that! 😊
