i get what he means, I also felt like WTSMG aged poorly sound-wise. Tunes themselves are legendary and that's why they are still remembered, but the wall of sound of Definitely Maybe is unmatched
That's hilarious, because Morning Glory is the best engineered album to me. The soundscape it creates is contiguous between tracks, and is simply magic elegant heighted reality ✨
Noel is talking about the brickwall MASTERING and use of compression on “(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?”, the tracks RMS level average at -8 dBFS. I’m surprised this wasn’t fixed on the subsequent 2014 remaster.
Yep always thought it was a shame that there’s literally zero separation on the tracks, no bass….. great songs but whoever mixed that album tried way too hard to get that ‘brick wall’ sound and basically killed the vibe!
-8dbfs would be even acceptable with this days tech. Problem is there some songs touching -4. Be Here Now is even worse, some songs are pure noise. These days you can achieve a pretty important loudness like -6 LUFS with less distortion than those days, when they pushed for the sake of pushing and compete between labels. Also, it depends on the genre. For Oasis it is certainly too much.
@@mwest9184 It is not much about the mixing stage of a record. As an audio engineer myself I recognize that the records are mixed pretty well in terms of how certain instruments are positioned in the stereo spectrum and the sound of the instruments per se. Unfortunately at the mastering stage they destroyed it all. And it happens unfortunately. You could mix a record like a god, but if the record label says that that at mastering stage the sound should be pushed to the limits to achieve maximum loudness at the expense of audio quality, there's nothing you can do, you previous good mixing work would be ruined.

I love that he says he doesn't care for the production on Morning Glory. One of the very first impressions I had of the album was that I couldn't believe that after such a successful debut album, they'd take such a step down in sound. Everything about Definitely Maybe sounds better. It's clearer, mixed better, just everything about the sound is way better. I also think the songs themselves are a lot better too, but I don't feel as strongly about that.
I agree. Definitely maybe is the only oasis studio album I put on to listen to for pleasure and will listen to it in its entirety. It’s a great album really. Morning Glory is still a good album but the production just doesn’t do it for me. The other albums all have their moments as he says, but really that’s all they have. I dont think he's saying he hates the Morning Glory album and I've many times heard him praise it - AND it was the album that sent Oasis into super stardom....no, I think hes just saying he doesn't like the production on it - something music ignoramuses like me don't really even notice.

Like the first two Kula Shaker records... they are just perfect. And so are if not the album - at least the singles.
DM sounds ‘authentic’ to a band sound-almost live; it has pedal hisses and untamed feedback. By the time you get to MG .. the money and production are on overdrive- it becomes too polished. It’s not worth mentioning the rest.
Take his first comment about DM "it's perfect" and the last comment "if you make a perfect album, then its all over" .. and there you have it: The fundamental issue with Oasis!
I think that’s more the case with ‘Be Here Now’ I think that was his excuse and it was probably the peak of his and Liam’s drug taking and I think that they both got clean of certain things after that album whether it be drugs or alcohol
They should remaster Morning Glory so that is doesn't sound so muddy. It is my fave album by them but it is like they over produced it to the point where the sound got lost
@@BloodSweatAndMeth I didn't say it wasn't rushed - I said it was over produced. You can over produce something quickly, by messing around with sounds too much, adding way too much compression etc.
So what I’m taking from this (and I am a life long Oasis fan) is that Noel hated nearly every album they made bar Def Maybe, but wants us all to kill each other getting tickets at £400 a go so he can play tracks he doesn’t particularly like or enjoy. Is that like a footballer hating the club he plays for but wants his shirt selling for £100 in the club shop?!
Yep morning glory is compressed way too much, they brick walled the crap out of it unfortunately, which is why it sounds so muddy with the dynamic range being absolutely terrible. A good reminder in production that you need to focus on the dynamics then loudness to get a great crisp sound.
They should remaster the entire album, They did a remaster of D’you know what I mean a couple of years back and it sounds absolutely mega. You can actually here the instrumental separation, everything sounds so clean.
It’s brick walled to death but when you play a song off Morning glory right after a different song from a different artist, the Morning Glory songs sounds massive & the other song sounds kind of weak
