    This is my jam. Hence my avatar. The interplay here between Lee, Lifeson, and Peart is about as good as it gets. That bass work is from another planet, that guitar solo is easily in Lifeson's top 5 best ever, and drumming wise I would say Peart's top 3 moments of his career. Just a perfect song. Neck and neck for me with Subdivisions on the perfection scale.

    • @m.ericwatson968
      @m.ericwatson968 3 года назад +3

      I love the interplay on this track, it is a straight-forward song but they are challenging each other as they always have, and Peart doing those tight snare rolls instead of the tom rolls he was known for in the '70's, he still finds room for cool embellishments, and one of Geddy's harder songs to play too

      even the edited version for MtV packs a lot of punch. I like the album version where there's just a little bit more insutrmental space to enhance the atmosphere though.
      I'm sure Alex would have been a lot happier at the time if many more of their 80s songs were like this in terms of synths and guitar mix where he could still rock out as well as be textural

    The 1985 graphics!!!! Neil's 1985 'tail' which was quite popular for the time. I saw this tour at the Meadowlands Arena and was a Sophomore in high school. This album is in my 'Top 3' favorites of their entire catalog. You should also know, this is an edited version of the song - which always sucks!! LOL! Happy New Year to you and yours.

    • @robertpinazza4043
      @robertpinazza4043 3 года назад +3

      Story to that tail:
      I’m from Montreal and during the summer of ‘85, unbeknownst to me an friend listening to Trees (ESL) on his ghetto blaster one afternoon on his porch, this man riding on his touring bike slows to a near crawl, listening intently to the wood block section of the song, amused by our air drumming. Well, he looks up and smiles and raises his right hand and gives us the V sign then waved to us and impressed, we teens immediately wave back and salute him - thinking to ourselves “ how cool is that older guy to know this song 🤔”. Then he rode on, and that’s where that tail can into view! I immediately remembered it for I had been to GUP and PW tours, and he sported it. Well, Trees finishes and I ask my buddy to put on the radio, and against his will he does and that’s when we heard the announcer proclaim that the phones were red hot with people calling in to ask whether Neil Peart was in Montreal, and he confirmed that it was the case and that he was last spotted in east end Montreal, rising his bike.
      The professor, had graced us, on our street. I’ll never forget that serendipitous moment.
      RIP NEP, you were and remain a legend among men.

    This is where I sort of tuned out from Rush when I first saw this video. I thought they changed too much from what I liked about them. I was just a 15 year old kid getting into Maiden and Metallica at the time. But later on in the 90's I got back into them and rediscovered this period of their music. This album is great start to finish.

    • @katskillz
      @katskillz 3 года назад +1

      it's so very Rush of them that just when entering the 80s and they're being known as the "philosophical" heavy metal band inspring a new generation of metal shredders, they started taking clues from Talking Heads and XTC and all sorts of New Wave and bring the synths to 11. Headbangers wept

    • @jgribhamnz

      The solo section is ridiculous. Such cool drum fills, using the temple blocks and some sort of drum pad. So unique and cool sounding, then the temp increases and the tom fills kick in. Of course Alex and Geddys playing is matching the drums every step of the way. Its just SO good. 80s Rush is criminally underrated.

    When live, a lot of the sound effects are triggered by Neil. For instance that "clap" sound is called a "clap trap" and is triggered by a pedal on his left foot..there is also another trigger slightly behind it that triggers a trumpet sound during his solos. The other effects are spread around the drum pads and MalletKat .

    For being right smack in the middle of the “keyboard era” of Rush, Geddys bass lines on this song are sick. you have to listen a little harder for them as the guitar plays over the top with that metallic ringing style, but no idea how Geddy can do anything at the same time as he’s playing that bass line , it’s crazy

    Here's what's so inspiring and great about RUSH... they were that band in the 70's wearing kimonos sing By-Tor and The Snow Dog to moving into the 80's wearing suits and singing BIG MONEY, and still have that rock at thier core. I as a fan was always excited riding that RUSH train to see where they were headed next. They weren't afraid to do anything and I love that in this band. Name any other band that grew like Rush did, not a single band had the growth and diversity of these three pioneers...never will again.

    i remember when i started drumming in 1990, i would practice most of the time to rush music. i was also into metal, but i was more interested in technique. i had friends drummers who only focused into metal drumming. and they noticed i was far more advanced than them. i told them to listen to rush and neil peart. if you can play most of rush musical catalogue on the drums, you can play pretty much anything. the quest for musical excellence never ends. nowadays you have drummers like gavin harrison who push the enveloppe further again. this is amongst rush hardest songs to play on drums. it is insane. neil was a drum god. when i learned of his death, i cried for 3 days. he was my hero.

    Rush opened their show w/ 'The big money' on the live record 'A show of hands' in 1988, which was recorded (and filmed for concert video) on the tour for the album 'Hold your fire'. I was lucky to see them perform it on the 2012 tour for 'Clockwork angels'...
    This album was 'Power windows' in 1985, and Geddy Lee was fully into writing on his keyboard, while Neil Peart was into electronic samples and beats... that left guitarist Alex Lifeson grumbling about how he was struggling to incorporate guitars into their music. 'Marathon' is one of my faves from that record... and 'Mystic rhythms'.

    Give OPEN SECRETS a listen.
    Rush put out an album called HOLD YOUR FIRE. and it has so many great songs on it. OPEN SECRETS is one of those. Personally I love the whole album, somehow it got a bad rap from alot of Rush fans, but the whole record is fire.

    It's way more complexed than you think. Try playing that bass line and singing at the same time. lol
    Anyways, Rush is the best. Since you like the rush 80's sound try "Turn the page" from hold your fire.

    "Greed is good" according to Gordon Gecko. The 80's were filled with this misconception that the super rich would bail out the rest of society. This song, and history, says otherwise.

    You should give I Think I'm Going Bald a listen. Not one of their bigger songs, but has a very cool syncopated beat.

    Rush is probably my favorite band ever. Sadly, they never made very good videos...lol. "The Big Money" is based on a John Dos Paasos trilogy titled "USA." I did enjoy the Monopoly board, though. The guitar is jangly and pushy at the same time. Geedy singing and playing that base line? Crazy. Neil's snare is also crazy. Great tune!!

    I wish someone would explain to me (sounds very 80s). I grew up in the 80s, and I watch all sorts of reaction videos on youtube these days. I've heard so many reviewers say "sounds so 80s" about songs that dont sound anything like other songs that suposedly "sound so 80's". Please tell me EXACTLY what you think the 80s sound is, when you describe so many songs as sounding 80's that dont sound anything like any other song. I wouldnt say Metallica sounds anything like Bon Jovi or Rush, or Rush sounds anything like Van Halen. Yet according to reviewers they sound soooo 80's. pfffft...... I dont get it.

      The fact that he could instantly tell it was from the 80's says something. Lots of 80's songs added sound effects not from instruments. Also many songs from then used drum machines rather than real drums. Most 60's and 70's songs strictly used all real instruments

      Technology was the big game changer. Digital recording was coming in, it was the beginning of the CD era. Recording became less about the room you were in and more about the desk you were using. Alex Lifeson stopped using amplifiers in the studio and plugged straight into the mixing desk. Synthesizers were becoming increasingly prevalent, specific sounds to that era, as well as drum machines. Recorded sounds were becoming increasingly compressed with the use of electronic effects, drums were louder in the mix, guitars were squealier.

      @@delorangeade I've heard songs from the 2000's with all the elements you described, and they are not referred to as "very 80's" sounding. So that does not answer the question. There is something that is different in those 80's sounding songs that is catching the ears of reviewers. Maybe the songs in the 80's were just way better than the crap out there now.

      I see a lot people mention that "80's sound" too. But they get it. The above comments are spot on. The 80's really had it's own unique sound, but it was especially prominent within the pop/pop rock genres. Yes, the heavier rock bands were a bit different because the guitars and drums were primarily in the forefront, and with very little if any synths or keyboards. But almost everyone, no matter what genre of music, were using the same studio technology, and digital effects (tons of reverb) and midi were the IN thing. At the same time, even if you have just a tiny bit of experience discerning the different sounds or trends decade to decade, you can probably at least detect which era that particualar sound or artist came from. To me, every decade spanning back to the 50's had it's own indentifiable style in culture and music.

      80s "Sound": shift from analogue synthesizers to digital; introduction of (and arguably overused) gated reverb drums; minimalist production; New Wave; Big Hair bands; beginning usage of sequencers/drum machines. At an admittedly uneducated guess, maybe the quality that's different from the last twenty years is that compression wasn't in heavy usage yet--songs still had a dynamic sound and weren't artificially made louder as done in the mp3 era--something that the original mix of Vapor Trails suffered (and as good as that album was it always made my ears bleed) that was fixed in the later remix.
